Today we bid a sad farewell to Asheville, NC. We both really liked this area and enjoyed our stay. We will probably need to come back sometime soon. Today is a motorcycle riding adventure day. While we could take the short route from Asheville, NC to Gatlinburg, TN, we decided to take the more circuitous and more adventurous route. So we had a quick breakfast at the hotel, and hit the road at about 8:15, thinking we would get a jump on the day. We had a little problem packing this morning as it seems we bought a little more in Asheville than we thought, and while everything fit on the bike, if we were going to buy anything else, we had better find a post office quick. We planned on figuring out the post office ... read more

Cade's Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee Cade's Cove is yet another section of the park, located in the northwestern corner. To get there from our campground required a ninety minute drive up and over Newfound Gap Road, to Sugarland Visitor Center and then west on the Laurel Canyon Road up and over some other mountains until we arrived at a small information center. At this point, the road becomes a one-way, 11 mile loop. The road is barely wide enough for a single car and the speed limit is just 10 mph. Along the loop are restored examples of homes, barns, churches and other buildings as they existed more than a century ago. This part of the park attempts to tell the story of how the Appalachian mountains were settled and farmed in the ... read more

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee Another Day in Paradise! We dedicated the day to exploring the northern central part of the park, what they call the Sugarlands - named for the dominance of sugar maple trees. This was the location of the wildfire last fall and the effects of the fire are obvious. Still, though, there is so much beauty to be seen here that it was a day full of wonder. We started the day at the top and worked our way down. That meant going to the tallest point in the park, Clingman's Dome, at over 6600 feet. In the Rockies, we call tall mountain spots 'peaks', but here in the Appalachians, after a couple hundred million years of erosion, the rocky, craggy peaks simply don't exist anymore. Instead the rocks are rounded ... read more

Day 3 and it's our last full day in Gatlinburg, we headed into town to have breakfast in the pancake pantry the most popular breakfast spot in the town and where man v food visited ! Popular was an understatement ! But after a thirty minute cue to get in the place we got seated ! Lovely food and we both ate far too much for your average Brit ! After this we walked of a bit of breckie looking around the local tourist toot shops and then went up into the mountains via the chair lift ! Great views of the mountains ! The afternoon consisted of a bit of barskin in the very hot sun by the pool back at our lodge. Burnt For dinner we again headed into town for a fat burger ... read more

Day 2 started with a typical US breakfast of waffles with maple syrup and a coffee !! We then checked out and headed back to the airport to pick up our hire car, the gangster Ford Fusion ! Rachael elected to drive first and once we eventually got out the manic city the traffic eased and after crossing over into North Carolina and then into Tennessee the drive turned very picturesque when we drive into the smokey mountains ! We see elks !! Due to it being a public holiday weekend the traffic was very slow heading into Gatlinburg, but we did eventually arrive at our digs and got settled in. A massive pizza and a couple of beers in the resort and we were Done for the day. Tomorrow :- exploring Gatlinburg !... read more

Recently I visited the great smoky mountains in the month of October to see the fall colors. Its one of the most visited national parks in USA and I really recommend every one to visit the smokies. It lies on the border of Tennesse and north carolina and spread across hundreds of miles. The best time to visit the smoky would be the fall season to see the beautiful colors of the fall. One should atleast have two complete days to visit the smokies. Be patient with the traffic as its the most visited national park. I think the maximum number of people visiting the smoky mountains would be Indians. Plan to see the fall colors, sceinic drives, hiking, trekking, fishing, waterfalls etc in the smokies. Its not a place where you can find a entry ... read more

To break up our trip (total drive 21 hours!!) we stopped back in Gatlinburg, TN. We stayed at the same resort, Mountain Loft Resort, and did a few things we were not able to do back in July. Our first stop was breakfast! We went to the Pancake Pantry. A MUST for anything specialty! I had the wild-berry crepes, and WOW! I almost went into a diabetic coma afterwards. So with that said we went back to Cades Cove, in The Smoky Mountain National Park, to walk off our breakfast and see some fall foliage. We stopped at some places we didn't get to like John Olivers house and the Cable Mill. We even saw more deer and bears! After the park we were craving some BBQ. We didn't want to drive into downtown and decided ... read more

September 29, 2014 (Monday) (Double click on a picture to enlarge it) I left Nashville and headed to Gatlinburg. The trip to Gatlinburg was uneventful. All the mishaps happened after I arrived. You ever have one of those days you know you will remember forever because of mishaps. Today was one of those day. I made the mistake of following the GPS to the resort in Gatlinburg where I’m staying for the rest of the week. I ended up going up a mountain on a 1 lane road with no place to turn around and hoping and praying I did not meet another car. I topped 1 steep grade and could not see the road on the other side going down. I had no idea if the road went straight or turned. I finally managed to ... read more

We spent quite a bit of time in Knoxville trying to find the right properties to buy. But on the weekends, we would head off somewhere fun to check out the area. Gatlinburg is a charming city not too far from Knoxville. So we went up to take a peak. We visited both Gatlinburg and the Smokey Mountains several times while we were in Tennessee.... read more
