Preparations for the journey ahead are going well and we are making progress on the Rum Runner. The name of the boat was painted on last Thursday, and we had a small christening party (although we decided against the traditional champagne bottle breaking on the bow of the boat, and decided to go with pouring rum drinks on the stern instead- we figured it was more appropriate). So she is now officially the Rum Runner and no longer referred to as Beneteau 473 hull #197. We have also commissioned the sushi boat, our dinghy. We bought the sushi boat and motor on Super Bowl Sunday. While everyone else was watching the football game, we spent 6 hours in West Marine negotiating the purchase of the sushi boat. Since then, we have been busy inflating it, getting ... read more

So here we are, another week in Charleston. Not a lot to report this week, we are still just getting the boat ready for the trip. Most days have been spent hanging out in the marina so that work can be done on the boat. But we are getting really anxious to pull up the lines and set sail. It is kind of a catch 22. We really want to be spending the days sailing, maybe practice our anchoring and doing a couple of overnight trips around here to get used to how the boat handles. But if we go out sailing, then the work can’t be done on the boat (and this is work that needs to be done before we can leave, like putting up the bimini and installing the solar panels). So ... read more

Last night was an interesting one. It all started like a normal Friday night here. Around 5 when everyone has finished work for the week and the weekend has begun, everyone from the marina heads to Salty Mikes for a drink. Salty Mikes is the locals bar at the marina and is just a hole in the wall place, very rustic with a lot of character. We have enjoyed going there because it is a great place to meet other sailors and swap stories. Last night we made friends with a delivery captain and his crew. They have sailed all over the world, across the Atlantic and thru the Panama Canal 4 times, moving other people’s boats for them. He gave us great advice and taught us some new tricks, all over a couple of dark ... read more

The weather was nice for a few days, sun and mild winds. We had just packed up the boat enough to even consider going out, so it was time. The thought of going out by ourselves in an area we don’t know well and on a boat we are just starting to learn was a bit frightening. But we remembered how we felt with our last boat on the first few times out and realized that we could do it. We also we starting to feel the need and the desire to start the sailing trip and not just the provisioning trip. So we decided to go solo. We almost got there the first time. Keys in the ignition, lines ready, items all stowed. But at the last second, we decided a quick break to review ... read more

So here we are in Charleston, SC. We have finally made it across the country and have rendezvous with the boat. We can’t believe how busy we have been and how much we have done in the last week. So we arrived in Charleston late Tuesday night, exhausted from the trek across America. Of course it was too late to go over to the marina and board the boat, so we found a nice hotel in downtown Charleston for the night. The next morning we woke up excited and ready to see the rum runner. It was Boat Day! A day we have been planning and waiting for so long. So we went over to the marina, walked down the dock, and boarded the rum runner for the first time. And WOW!!! She is a beautiful ... read more

So, the first question we are asked everytime we talk to friends and family is, "Where are you now?" The unfortunate part is that even though we set out on this adventure almost 2 months ago, we have only been living on our boat for the last week. Yes, just a week. It took us a long time to pack up the house and move accross the country. Throw the holidays in there and an emergency medical class and that just about sums up the last two months. Oh how time flies. The second thing that friends and family commonly ask is, "When we are updating the blog?" I know it has been a while since our last entry and we were tempted to report on our drive accross America and the month we spent in ... read more

This is a picture/back log of a trip my family and I took to South Carolina in August 2004. We went to Myrtle Beach and Charleston, South Carolina. It was great, except I got a terrible, terrible sunburn (I had blisters! Ew!). It was so terrible I had to spend a day on a couch in the horizontal direction and could hardly move. By time we got down to Charleston, I could move (it was still painful) but I was so red that when I was in the Market, a little girl actually pointed at me and laughed. I looked like a lobster, I guess. Laughter aside, it was a great trip. Had a lot of great seafood and got to visit the place where my dad's side of the family is from. My dad was ... read more

Here we are in Charleston South Carolina. We feel like we’re truly in the south now. It’s amazing the differences we see after traveling only a couple of hundred miles south. Almost like we crossed over some invisible border into another country. The speech is very different (we hear the southern drawl from most of the locals), attitude is different, the temperature & humidity went up 20 degrees and the land is totally different. Our campground is a real slice of the south and located in a swamp area. I know you are probably saying “euuhh… they are staying in a swamp????” but it’s not bad. All the trees have the Spanish moss hanging from them and we expect to see an alligator any minute (so far no luck, is that good or bad?) We did ... read more
