What did the founding fathers drink when they signed the Declaration of Independence? Drunk by the founding fathers during the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Madeira was also what Francis Scott Key sipped as he composed “The Star-Spangled Banner.” George Washington (who reportedly drank a pint every night with dinner), Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin all adored it, as did John Adams (who wrote to his wife, Abigail, about the copious amounts they consumed during the Continental Congress). By the end of the eighteenth century, nearly a fourth of all the Madeira produced was being exported to the American colonies. The unbridled American passion for Madeira was certainly a testament to its compelling flavor. But Madeira’s popularity was equally based on something far more mundane: taxes. As of 1665, British governing authorities in the colonies ... read more

I live in North Carolina, but occasionally travel to the Adirondack region of New York. That's where I spent my summers as a kid, and it's a great place to cool off and escape the extremely hot summers in the south. On my last trip from NY back to NC I decided to visit the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia. Parking. I pulled in to Philly and quickly discovered that what I heard was true. There's basically nowhere to park. I currently live in a small town in North Carolina and drive a heavy duty Dodge 2500 with the big crew cab and a long bed. The truck is around 25' long and takes up 1.5 parking spaces. I can pretty much go wherever I'd like with ease and even pull up close to businesses. In ... read more

I wasn't up that early in the morning, however whilst the others were showering and getting ready (I had already showered myself, just in case you're thinking I'm a slob) I walked around to get some final some photos. Philadelphia apparently means "city of brotherly love" and one of the sculptures to see is the "love" sculpture. After searching where it should have been I was advised that it has been taken away temporarily whilst the square it was in is being landscaped. There is a French "Amor" one near by if, by some chance, that is supposed to be any kind of substitute. Once we were sorted, we set about driving to New York. Our satnav badly let us down on the way to Philadelphia so this time we decided to ignore it and blindly ... read more

I made it an early start again to get some photos of the skyline following the missed opportunity the night before. I found a point over the river near the Art Museum, with a glorious view once the sun came up. By chance, I looked in the other direction and there was a fantastic view of some boat houses that were all outlined in lights - I'm not sure what the set-up is with those, but they looked stunning against the night sky. The stunning view was contrasted with the shock of all the homeless people on the streets whist I was walking there and back. Literally every bench had someone sleeping on it. Philadelphia used to be the capital of the US for about ten years between independence and the move to Washington D.C. It ... read more

BOOH!

this day, I checked off 2 things to do in Philadelphia ...first try the philly cheese steak and go to Macy's. Then we went to Independence Hall which is the centerpiece of Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, on Chestnut Street between 5th and 6th Streets. It is known primarily as the location where both the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were debated and drafted. Liberty Bell is another significant aspect of Philadelphia. Then we made that hilarious trip to The Eastern State Penitentiary, also known as ESP, is a former American prison in Philadelphia, PA. The penitentiary refined the revolutionary system of separate incarceration first pioneered at the Walnut Street Jail which emphasized principles of reform rather than punishment. Not many people like visiting this place, because it ... read more

Early morning i was very excited to take the train to Philadelphia because i used to enjoy the free first class long distance train trips in India because of my father who worked for central railways. Philadelphia was a metro city with skyscrapers and busy life. So we were no more in country side but a crowded metropolitan city. We went to Reading Terminal Market for lunch and enjoyed the trip to the city Hall. We were fortunate to be taken to the top where the statue of William Penn is because it gives a view of the entire city. Philadelphia City Hall is the house of government for the city of Philadelphia, in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania. At 548 ft (167 m), including the statue of city founder William Penn atop it, it was the ... read more

PHILADELPHIA here we go again - once in a while (well to be honest it happens a lot) we just get this craving for Philly cheesesteaks - thinly sliced meat, onions and dripping cheese, etc, etc, etc. And since Philly is just a couple hours away and the home of the cheesesteak we try and make it out there as often as we can. It was cold, dreary and rainy in Stamford so off we went for an overnight stay in Philly. First up was the restuarant "10 Arts" by Eric Ripert. Nikkie love Ripert and "just happen" to know that he has a restaurant in Philly. It is a very typical hotel restaurant (in the lobby of the Ritz-Carlton) with views of the hotel lobby. We started with the raw oysters and seafood chowder (very ... read more
