Who would've thought that you couldn't find wi-fi on the beach in Oregon? Well, we've had a tough time. Reason: coffee kiosks. With a kiosk every block there are no coffee shops, the home of wi-fi nationwide. So we have finally found one in Reedsport, our last stop on the coast (probably--but who knows, it's early in the day). We are heading to Crater Lake either today or tomorrow. Camping the first night where it is projected to be in the 20s. That will be our coldest night yet so we'll see how it goes. The pay off is that after that we're setting up in a B&B for a couple nights to rest. So while freezing we will have that to look forward to. Saw some Gray Whales off the coast yesterday and today viewed ... read more

It seems that no matter where we go there is road construction. Yesterday we couldn't get into Oregon because it was closed. Sorry! Actually it was just the bridge from WA but it has become a joke. No matter how small the town, there is road construction. Orange barrels rule America! Thanks for the info. Windie. We were in Astoria last night, which seemed pretty nice. Cannon City is close by so we'll check it out today. We drove along Lake Crescent twice going to Olympic but we didn't stay there. Maybe next time. It reminded us of Loch Lomand in Scotland (except the hills had trees instead of being bare). Olympic was great. We had marvelous views of Mt. Olympus and the Olympic Range and did two hikes in the rain forest. Incredible! I cannot ... read more

070918 Portland Oregon So much happened in Portland. I saw so many cool places and met hung out with some good people. The first night I was there I hung out with some people I work with. Portland is a place where a lot of co-workers live. Amber, Noah, Neil, Tamra, and I went to a couple of cool local bars and made we make it back to Amber and Noah’s despite a couple of misadventures with the Portland PD. Monday after brushing off a slight hangover I made my way to PDX, the Portland International Airport to pick up Sara. Sara’s a girlfriend of mine from Phoenix that I met in the spring. Hanging out with Sara over the next week was such a great experience. She had lived in Portland for a while so ... read more

070915 Crater Lake National Park, Oregon I almost missed seeing this. I was planning on driving up the coast from southern Oregon to Portland, but as I was driving I saw signs for this national park. I’ve heard about it before, but didn’t even think of it as I was planning my weekend. Luckily I had camped just about 30 minutes outside of Klamath Falls. When I entered the city and saw signs for Crater Lake I immediately changed my destination. Driving up to the crater you can see Mount Baldy, Diamond Mountain, Diamond Lake and a whole slew of other mountains. It’s a great view. I find that I keep saying this or that is amazing, but over this summer I’ve seen more beautiful, magical places than in any other three months of my life. ... read more

Bob and I went to Astoria today, only to find out there’s way more to do than can be done in one day! That area is rich in history, and we saw just a glimpse of it. There is the Astoria Column which is 125’ tall, and has 164 steps in the spiral staircase. That’s 112 more steps to climb when you first think, “Enough already!” But the view at the top is gorgeous, and well worth the climb. We went on a cloudy day and it was still breathtaking. Coming down that spiraling torture chamber made me very very dizzy. We spent most of the day on the wharf. They have lots of tourist shops (hi, Rosie!) and places to sit and watch the river traffic. We saw several sea lions, and watched them ... read more

i am finally making it down to south america! peru and ecuador to be exact, or inexact. i leave in november and will be down there for 6.5 sweet months, i mean weeks. i hope this travel blog thing will allow my friends and family that didn't fit into my 3200 cubic-inch backpack to join in on the fun. they say there are computers in most towns and they even have d'internet, hee haw! i guess if montana has d'internet so does remote peruvian villages at 18,000 feet in the sky! so it might take a day and a half to upload a single picture but at least my words and where'abouts can be broadcasted to my loving tribe. and it might be good for me just to remember what went on in the final days ... read more
