6/2/2008 I did not title this boring because it was a boring day but the town we visited was called Boring, Oregon XD. Here the president of Oregon Farm Bureau lived. He is also a family friend so we stoped in and spent the night there. He lives on a farm. He grows plants so they could be put in pots to sell. Like baby trees and rasberry plants. He had some strawberries for people to come out and pick. They were sooo good, I couldn't stop eating them! Katie ... read more

I made the long drive from Portland to the southern Oregon coast today, looking for a place to camp. I had my mind set on Brookings and Harris Beach State Park, though it was a 5 to 6 hour drive down I-5, over the Coast Range, and down the coast highway. Getting out of Portland early was key since I did not want to fight over camping sites on the Thursday of 4th of July weekend. The drive through the Willamette Valley was a normal interstate journey. The fun parts were on highway 42 to Bandon and then down the coast to Brookings. I’ve seen parts of the California coast and Oregon is similar for the most part - at least to places like Mendocino. Even so, it was great to see the ocean again. That ... read more

6/30-7/1/2008 We arrived in Florence the night of the 30th and camped outside of it. We decided to stay a second night which was nice to stay in one place for a while. Florence was a cute oceanside town. We went on a hike to the light house, which was very pretty. We also visited the Sea Lion Cave which is the largest sea cave in the world! There were tons of sea lions. That night we shopped in old town Florence and ate dinner in a good sea food restraunte. The camp site was next to the ocean so we were swimming again. The water wasn't as cold but it was still pretty bad. My brother and I even found some sand dollars! Katie... read more

Most of my time in Portland has been spent in the Oregon Historical Society so I have not gotten to see all the sites. The one that I did get a chance to check out was ‘The Grotto’. It beckoned me from a hillside south of the airport as our plane landed the other day. As we approached the runway, I looked out the window and saw an absurdly large cross perched on a hill near the highway. I had a quest; I must find out what in the world was going on there. As it turns out, there is a hole in the side of the cliff (hence the name ‘The Grotto’) where someone many years ago installed a statue of the Virgin Mary. There is a chapel (and a gift shop) with walking paths ... read more

On the road - Mini Molly (the motor home) with kiddie car in tow and four very excited travelers headed out at 6:28 am. Our travels took us through a wide variety of countryside including the Columbia River Gorge, Hood River, the high desert of Oregon, rolling hillsides and farmland, plains of Idaho and back to desert and farmland before heading into the elevation toward Yellowstone. We crossed the Snake River 15 times, giving us a good idea of why they call it the Snake River. The first day was VERY long and we briefly considered making an unplanned stop allowing us to finish the next day. We took a vote and decided to push on. We passed through the west entrance of Yellowstone at 11:28 pm where a very surprised ranger informed us we had ... read more

This morning began with a leisurely awakening at 6 am and coffee from the French press. We dressed and visited “The Original Pancake House” for breakfast. Now, you might say, that’s no big deal, but this is THE original, from which all other locations sprouted and was featured last week on the Food Network. It made for a lovely start to the day. Patty and Karen spent the next two hours buying provisions for the trip - groceries and supplies. Bill and David learned how to use all the functions on the motor home and how to hook-up the tow vehicle we affectionately call “kiddie car”. After packing, prepping and getting checked off my sister, came to get us for a fun filled afternoon. She took us all to see the scenic Multnomah Falls where Patty ... read more

Starting at the Norfolk International airpot, our journey began. The kids took us to the airport at 5:30 in the morning to be sure we made it through the MASSIVE security line in time for our 7 am flight. All went well, and after a brief stop at Starbucks (I'm predicting the first of many) David, Karen, Patty and Bill all boarded a Delta airplane headed for the great northwest. The fires in the Great Dismal Swamp were an amazing sight as we headed north and west to eventually go south to Atlanta. The high pressure in the the area held the smoke in a think blanket over Hampton Roads. It was clearly delineated in layers and appeared to be very small from our vantage point - but the impact was tremendous! I hope they are ... read more

We took full advantage of Tims' hospitality and not only showered but washed some of our clothing. Amber was actually ended up doing it and she turned it into a bit of a game - "who has the dirtiest clothing". The level of dirtiness was measured by how many rinses it took before the water didn't turn black anymore. I am proud to say that the original Schwalm family (jeff and I) both tied at like 5 rises (which is pretty damn dirty) - the water was disgusting (poor Amber). Healdsburg, CA (Sonoma) We got a late start that morning and headed out to Sonoma. He hadn't been on the road for more then 30 minute when we made a stop at the first (of many) breweries (Sudwerks). I have to admit, I really love having ... read more
