September 2008: Went to Portland, OR to raft the White Salmon River, see the Columbia Gorge River Area, and explore the city. We rafted the White Salmon and hiked a few trails of the Columbia Gorge area. Amazingly beautiful. The White Salmon is a small river that flows down from Mt. Adams(in Washington) and flows into the Columbia River. It was really fun but the water was about 40 degrees so it was cold! We did the half-day rafting trip in the morning and hiked around the gorge the rest of the day checking out a few waterfalls, ending at the famous Maltnomah Falls. If you're ever in the Portland area, Columbia River Gorge is a must. Take the Columbia River Highway east and there are tons of waterfalls (77 to be exact) and hikes to ... read more

Anyway, the next day in San Francisco was a goody. We got up and had breakfast at Johnny Rockets - truckloads of coffee, pancakes etc and other assorted junk food. Good for a change. Then off we went and hiked all the way from Fisherman's Wharf to the Golden Gate bridge. Took bloody ages but there was method in our madness - still trying to get the boys into the right time zone because come bedtime they seem to be suddenly coming alive. The idea here being to get them so knackered that they'll go to sleep tonight at the proper time. Anyway it was a good walk and a nice sunny day - didn't realise how sunburnt we were getting though because of the wind. Its been windy just about all the time so ... read more

Columbia River Gorge North America » United States » Oregon » Columbia River Gorge » Cascade Locks By Danielle and PaulApril 18th 2007 Yesterday we explored the waterfalls of Columbia Gorge, Oregon. They were awesome! Even though it was raining, we hiked to the tops. Echo even loved them. Luckily, not enough to jump in! Today was mostly a driving day, down the Oregon coast. The rain finally let up when we reached California, but along the way the rocky coast was breathtakin... read more

Astoria, Tillamook, and Columbia Gorge North America » United States » Oregon » Columbia River Gorge » Cascade Locks By Danielle and PaulApril 16th 2007 And we're off!! We've reached Oregon, which means we added another state to our sticky map that displays all of the states in our main camper window. Washington, and now Oregon! We started way up in the northwest corner, at Astoria. The "astoria column" (woohoo!) was the official first stop on our trip, which we had to pay... read more

As predicted the weather packed in. It rained during the night and we awoke to a damp tent, luckily no water had leaking inside. We packed up and hit the road and pretty well could see nothing of the fantastic scenery. So we put up in a church for the morning service and waited for the weather to clear. The church proved very welcoming and friendly, but it was more traditional than I am used to! It cleared enough for us to bike part of the spectacular historic highway which weaved above the Columbia river gorge. No motorized traffic is allowed on this stretch of the road as the two tunnels make it impossible for cars to get through. The gorge once was a raging river full of rapids, but the white man came along and ... read more

After our exciting boat trip in Portland, we decided to do a day of some scenic roads in Oregon(otherwise known as the Lewis and Clark Trail.)We were able to see some magnificent waterfalls and did some hiking along the Columbia River. It was a bit overcast in the morning (the first sighting of bad weather in a long time.) The restaurant we ate lunch at overlooked where some of the best wind surfing is in the US. After a late lunch we decided that it was time to see the coast again, so we randomly drove back out to the coast of Oregon. We ended the day in Seaside, Oregon to watch the sunset. Just a wonderful reminder of how amazing the USA is, in that you can see both the sunrise and sunset over two ... read more

Corey and I had a great time this weekend away from planning and packing to enjoy the Deschutes river with some friends. It was a quick trip just two days on the river to cover 70 miles down a river to the mouth of the Deschutes where it emptied into the mighty Columbia River. The weather in the high desert of Oregon was very hot and dry (which is by the way the best weather for river rafting). Clothes dried quickly and that is a good thing with all the rapids and water fights that occured whilst on the river. We camped under the stars and enjoyed a massive dinner that's leftovers also served as lunch the following afternoon. We are really glad we came and hope many of the friends we made on the trip ... read more

In late April, 2005 Nan, Shad and I made a photo safari to the Columbia Gorge towing our light weight Quicksilver fold-out tent trailer behind our Subi Forester. It was our first outing since our trip last September east to the Grande Tetons and Yellowstone National Parks. Many of the photos made on this trip are available for view and purchase from my online gallery at NW Exposures Earlier this year I had a 12 volt water pump system installed in the Q'silver and this was our first time to try it out. Momma, the trail boss, is happy. That means that Shaddow and I are happy too. The pump is easy and convenient; it surges to service with a turn of the lever next to the water spout. With the price of gas, I drove ... read more
