We're having one of those rare days of winter today. When you wake up and the trees are thick and heavy with frost. So beautiful. There's a heavy fog as well despite it not being that cold (in North Dakota terms) at degrees in the mid 20s. I was hoping for a little sun to poke through to make for some gorgoeous photos but the forecast states it's unlikely so heavy fog for the day is what I get to work with it. Headed out this morning to what caught my eye in the frost. Went straight to the Missouri River to get some photos along the partially frozen river. The Missouri is a very large and fast moving river. It will often free over in winter but there can also be open areas which remain ... read more

Obfuscator writes: We left Lake Sakakawea State Park promptly in the morning, except for once again spending some time trying to dry our stuff out. That had to be cut a bit short though, as we were running in front of what we thought was a storm front. We drove into the nearest town, which was very small, and called Pick City. There we found the “Best dam bar by a dam site,” which we declined to visit. It was 9:00 AM, which is a little early to start, even for me. We drove along the Missouri, and along the way, encountered our mystery bird. Basically we were following a truck, that suddenly swerved and broke hard. Less than a second later, one of our friend’s cousins flew off the front driver’s side of the truck, ... read more

My nephew is a lover of history so we decided to spend a couple hours on a warm day in the air conditioned comfort of the North Dakota Heritage Center. I hadn't toured the Center for many years. The Museum is very full of items relating to North Dakota's history. So full in fact that they are trying to get the funds to expand because they have so much in storage that they are unable to display. The Center is the largest museum in the State of North Dakota and located on the campus of the State Capitol. There are also lots of statues located outside throughout the grounds which are worthy of the walk. Actually, you can drive up to most of them. The Center has several dinosaur and fossil exhibits on display from finds ... read more

Had the chance today to drive up to the Mandan Indian Village site and catch the great view of the Missouri River from high above on one of the hills of the Missouri River Valley (from the Bismarck, ND side). The Missouri River is pretty low nowadays so the sand bars are pretty evident. Still a very pretty view looking toward Mandan, ND and down the River. Also has an easy walk to the remnants of the old Indian Villages. I also went down by the Missouri River and took some shots of the very cool looking old railroad bridge (one of several bridges crossing the Missouri). A storm was rolling in so that is why there are dark skies. ... read more

Spent the morning at the Bismarck Capitol. Was one of the those beautiful frosty mornings where the frost hung on the bare trees making them look so incredibly beautiful. The sky was a pretty blue. The Legislative Session was in full swing so lots of people around. Went and took a few pictures of the grounds. Bismarck is a very pretty little city built in the rolling hills of the Missouri River valley. The Capitol was built on one of the city's hills.... read more
