4-Day Trial Walk – Day 3: After dinner and day 2’s blog, I got an excellent night’s sleep at my buddy Richard’s house. I was up and on my way by 8am. Richard, the kind friend he is, was concerned about me continuing and offered to take me to my next stop, or maybe half way. I graciously declined, since I intended to do the whole 4-day walk to Chimney Rock or at least Lake Lure. The first leg was a bit tough, with a lot of ups, but I finally made it to my first rest stop at the W.E. Willis Grocery around 9:30, where I had a steak biscuit and an iced coffee. I was going to get a cherry danish, but some guy saw me get it and recommended one of their homemade ... read more

After a miserable night’s sleep of waking up every hour or two, and feeling cold often, I was awake and ready to go before 9am. My wife took me back to Landrum, at the intersection of I26 and Hwy 14, about where I would have reached yesterday, if I hadn’t gone in the wrong direction. Today I wasn’t carrying my backpack, just my fanny back with two bottles, so the 20 plus miles to Lake Lure shouldn’t be too bad. I turned onto Red Fox Road, walked a mile or so and realized I should have used the restroom back at the gas station where my wife dropped me off! I knew there wasn’t any gas stations or stores for quite a few miles, but when I spotted a church, and realized it was Sunday, I ... read more

July 7, 2010 What a view! We visited Chimney Rock State Park, just 25 miles southeast of Ashville, NC, on what must have been one of the hottest days in July. With our AAA discount our admission to the park was $12 a person. The road to the top could have been a little wider. Meeting that Pepsi truck on one of the curves was not for the faint of heart. And neither, by the way, was the view from atop Chimney Rock! You actually climb out on this mountainous rock that has been bordered by fencing. Fencing aside, it is still alittle intimidating. For the hearty you can climb to the top of Chimney Rock via a never ending set of wooden stairs. For the less hearty, like us, a 26-story, thirty-second elevator ride was ... read more

I've visited Chimney Rock before and so enjoyed myself the last time that I wanted to go back again. It was a nice drive as you weave your way through the trees. Things weren't as green this time of year as I had hoped but was still a lovely way to spend a good chunk of my day. Plus, got a workout! Headed off to the Skyline Trail to make my way to the top of Hickory Nut Falls. The path is a mix of dirt, roots, wood, rock steps and wood steps. You're definitely climbing up. Wasn't a lot of people there yet since it had just opened so had some nice views of Chimney Rock. Made my way along the trail and finally reached the falls. The waterfall was pretty powerful this time of ... read more

Flew in a little early for a conference in Washington, DC, rented a car and decided to have a little weekend getaway before my meeting started. Drove down to Asheville, NC. Beautiful drive along the way. I had read and heard so much about the Biltmore. It is truly one of America's few castles. Started out the day touring the Biltmore. We were not allowed to take pictures inside but you can see online if interested just how beautiful the interior is. Plus, they did an episode of A&E's "America's Castles" on it. It is staggeringly massive with extensive grounds and property. They also have a huge garden and beautiful views of the Blue Ridge Mountains from the "back balcony" as I'd call it. Room and room inside is beautiful and unique. Was finished in the ... read more

Wednesday was a day to explore the natural features of the Western North Carolina mountains. The previous day's rain had cleared, we would see the features! We followed US 74A southeast from Asheville to Chimney Rock. Chimney Rock is a large natural formation shaped like--a chimney. It is described as a a 315 foot (96 m) granite monolith overlooking Hickory Nut Gorge and Lake Lure. One enters the site from the highway and then follow a winding road up to the parking lot. From there, a trail leads to Chimney Rock itself, or there is also an elevator. A gift shop and cafe are located next to the rock, but do not detract from the impressive sight. Chimney Rock itself has a overlook that enables a view of Lake Lure below and the Great Smoky Mountains ... read more
