Mom passed away on September 22nd. This is not news you ever want to hear but it definitely hits hard when you are so many miles away. I hold on to the memory of my last visit with Mom on the 8th of September. It was a good visit and we enjoyed our time together as our visits seemed to always include memories of our many trips we took together. Unfortunately, I do not have many of my photos from our many trips over the years here on the boat, but sharing a few that I have here. All we had to say to Mom was that we were going on a trip and did she want to join us – she didn’t even wait for us to say where we were going! We traveled in ... read more

Saratoga Springs with https://www.heygo.com/aaronandpatrick The British built Fort Saratoga in 1691 on the west bank of the Hudson River. Shortly thereafter, British colonists settled the current village about a mile south; it was known as Saratoga. In 1910, woodcarver Marcus Charles Illions carved 28 horses to craft a carousel with the intention of "wowing" children of all ages. Illions is widely considered to be one of the greatest carousel carvers in the world, and his ponies are most known for their dazzling heads (each one carved by Illions himself) and well-decorated bodies. These 28 horses even featured real horsehair tails! For 77 years, children of all ages enjoyed riding Illions' carousel. In 1987, the future looked pretty unpromising for these gorgeous horses. At t... read more

A few of you have been asking what we are doing so we figured it was long overdue for an update. The end of October Janice flew back to the US due to some medical problems the Dr. in the Netherlands couldn’t figure out. Bob stayed in Lelsytad, Netherlands and got stuck with winterizing Tsamaya and getting her pulled. With there being so many unknown’s we decided to put her on the hard and have a few jobs done on her in our absence. Flevo Marina in Lelystad is a first-rate operation. A year ago we had the boat pulled and did some work on our prop shaft and on our rudder and were extremely happy with the results. This year we needed new bottom paint, some repairs to the bottom of the keel (thanks to ... read more

History, health and horses. This is the Saratoga motto that has made this sweet little town a very special summer destination. Only 3 1/2 hours north of NYC but just as chic and fabulous, Saratoga offers excitement and fun for just about everyone. History If you're a history buff, you will love this 26,727 populated city. There's the battlefield of Saratoga where our founding fathers fought the British, and won, during the American Revolution. Considered one of the fifteen most decisive battles in American history, the Battle of Saratoga is an important place in history. And Saratoga is one of the few places where they dedicate entire weekends (usually every October) to war re-enactment, decorating the entire grounds as if you were back in the 16th century. But you don't need to go to a battlefield ... read more

On January 13thJanice left from Heathrow and flew to Albany, NY via Charlotte to visit family for 7 weeks. Bob stayed in London living on Tsamaya and worked on some boat projects. Just like any house there is always work to get done and never enough time. The problem with major boat projects is that you're living and working in the same space. With Janice away Bob was able to tear the boat part and not have to put it back together every night. Fortunately when Janice landed in Albany the weather was not bad and she quickly got back in to driving everywhere. As with previous visits back to the states getting Dr. appointments out of the way and checking things off our the shopping list consumes a great deal of time. Although we can ... read more

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NEW YORK I arrived in Albany from Sarasota as scheduled. I used some of my accumulated miles from previous trips to fly first class. First time I had booked first class (I have been upgraded on a few previous flights) and I know why it’s called first class. My car I booked at Hertz wasn’t ready, so they upgraded me to a bigger car. I only had to wait a few minutes, so the upgrade was a real gift. I got to my sister’s house earlier than she (Bev) expected, so my brother-in-law (Bob) and I checked out some of his home brew (very good) and some good beers from production breweries also. My sister prepared a great dinner featuring grilled steak. Sunday, I went to church at St. Mary’s in Ballston Spa. It ... read more

What to do? Entertaining a houseful on the day after Thanksgiving! It’s a beautiful, crisp late fall day and everyone (age range 9 – 70ish) is feeling a little stuffed and in need of fresh air and exercise. Luckily we live near the Saratoga National Historical Park located in Stillwater New York. The Park offers a small museum dedicated to the Battle of Saratoga, said to be the turning point of the American Revolution, a walking trail, a tour road with MP3 or cell phone narrations, a plethora of monuments with interpretive signage and push button narrations, and scattered cannons (to play on). It’s a perfect balance of history, exercise, photo ops and family camaraderie! We start at the Visitor Center with a 20 minute film, a well done synopsis of what happened here in 1777. ... read more

The little boys (Jack 8 and Casey 10) are lively and fun to be with. We had a few days with them while their parents were otherwise occupied. Glens Falls is a little more than half way between Rutland, Vermont and Ballston Lake, New York so Chris (their father) met us at Frank's Pizza Shop near the Lake George outlet malls (Routes 9 and 149) to make the exchange. No shopping this day! Instead we headed south on Rt. 9 toward Glens Falls to Fun Spot. Fun Spot is well named. The boys drove mini cars (Wes had to be with Jack as he hasn't yet met the requisite height 54"). They played in a very cool indoor gym and we signed them up for a few rounds of the highlight of the experience - laser ... read more

Saw a phish show in Saratoga state park. The park was beautiful. We had to walk through a golf course to get to the venue. The venue was pretty large with two levels of seats and a huge lawn. We had lawn tickets so finding a spot to hang out was difficult. We ended up relatively close and have a good view of the venue TV screen. Show was great with the end of the sets being there strong parts. Driving back home to Grand Rapids, Mi tonight.... read more
