Day 8 Brooklyn Today was our first full day in Brooklyn and our first full day with Caroline and Mike. Another sluggish start (this jet lag seems to be dragging on a fraction). Mike and I went on a coffee and pastry reconnaissance, which was partially successful, although a couple of the pana chocalate turned out to be plain croissants. Around noon we left our Union St abode and headed towards the Williamsburg bridge on east River. We walked along many of the cool streets of Brooklyn. I found a brilliant latte and Bella found a book shop that carried new editions of two of her favourite book series. We ended up at a new development on the riverside called Domino’s Park. They are redeveloping the old warehouses into new residential areas (Docklands style), with great ... read more

Our cruise aboard Caribbean Princess to the Canadian Maritimes and Greenland was to sail from Brooklyn. This would be a first, sailing from Brooklyn rather than Manhattan. To reach Brooklyn, we drove up I-95 to northern New Jersey, then took I-278 across Staten Island and the Verrazzano Narrows bridge to Brooklyn. It was a raimy and gloomy trip, taking about eight hours. We stayed Sunday night at the Marriott Brooklyn Bridge. Dinner was found next door to the hotel, at Rocco's Tacos & Tequillar Bar, a popular neighborhood spot. Monday morning I took a walk around the block outside our hotel. The rain was gone and the sun now out! This was a very central location in Brooklyn. Passerby and transit busses reminded me of the scene looking out of our Loondon hotel two years before. ... read more

It was a bright sun New Year's Eve afternoon a little more than 32 years ago when we began our greatest journey. We found ourselves nervously sitting amongst one of the most unique collections of people we had ever experienced. The mixture of languages, skin colors and the obvious financial differentials of this diverse cast of characters meant it could only be one city in the world. Nowhere else on earth could have offered this mixture of cultures, shapes and varieties of the human experience. It had to be in New York City. We and about 100 other couples were here in the Manhattan marriage license bureau for the second day in a row. The previous day we had stood in line and paid our ten dollars to receive our license. Today would be the day ... read more

We’re now four and a half days into our seven day visit to New York City and so time to start this blog. We’ve also had a slightly quieter day today in an effort to give Terry’s sore feet a bit of rest. We arrived here last Monday after a very early (3:00am) start in Los Angeles, 6:00 am departure followed by a 5-hr flight to NYC. By the time we collected our luggage, caught a taxi and crawled through the heavy traffic at JFK it was probably about 3:30 pm before we reached our apartment in the Clinton Hill district of Brooklyn. Once again, we are staying in an AirBnB and chose to stay in Brooklyn rather than with the throngs of other tourists in Manhattan. Our apartment is lovely, a 1-bedroom affair in a ... read more

Saturday in NYC means some of the subway lines aren't operating or are on different schedules. We left the hotel for the subway stop right near the door. Got off and walked a bit to the Tenement Museum which was a great tour. We had seen a piece on it on Sunday Morning a couple months ago and were looking forward to it. Great stories, good guide. Then wandered over through one of the four Chinatowns in NYC, making our way to the Fulton Market and the waterfront. Was quite a bit like China at several points--the people playing music and games in the park, the open fresh food markets and lots of wares in lots of little shops. Great meal at a restaurant that I thought I took a picture of from the outside but ... read more

Despite my intentions to wake up early and have an AH/life discussion with Amanda and Noah, my exhausted body got the best of me and my intentions since its a "Build Day" today, which means we can sleep in a bit. Raffi handles making bacon and sausage and I handle making some pancakes for our team. Our host woman was very accommodating and helpful in her efforts to help us make pancakes and coffee. Our alum that is serving as our Affordable Housing tour guide arrives and we all stand in a circle and give him our name, where we are from, and our favorite K2C memory thus far. I believe I talked about watching my team ride into West PAlm, despite wanting to ride, and getting over myself and having a shift in perspective about ... read more

Today we are headed to the BIg City, the Big Apple, Destination of many foreign travelers past and present, the promise of a new beginning and a new life. But. We are tired. It's early. It's raining. And we don't want to ride our bicycles. It's an early wake up call and there's not much to eat for breakfast. I settle for an ice cream cone, two hard boiled eggs, some left over coffee we stuck in the fridge, and some OJ. Only in Bike & Build world would I eat a breakfast like this, let alone at 5 in the morning. We're all exhausted from the ride yesterday so I try to pump us up by playing Alicia Keys "Empire State of Mind" on repeat as well as "New York, New York" since there was ... read more

It’s amazing the difference a day makes. Tuesday has the sun out and it’s set to be a fabulous day in New York., no more wild weather from Hurricane Nate. Mum and I headed out early for a visit to the Empire State Building. We’ve been waiting for a nice morning to go up to the 86 th floor to check it out the 360 degree views we get of New York. We’ve been keeping an eye on the tower from our appartment window and love the different colours it lights up at night. It was blue for the Yankees baseball game and red, green and white on Columbus Day. We get a grest view of the top of the tower from our bedroom window. We decided to head to the American Museum of Natural History. ... read more

Suzanne here... We'd not had long enough in either Baltimore or Philadelphia really. But we didn't have any flexibility. We'd booked our hotel in New York months ago. It was still eye-wateringly expensive, as New York always is, but a slightly better rate than booking last minute. Amtrak was more comfortable than the Greyhound. The journey passed smoothly and before long we were at Penn Station. On the way to the metro station, David patiently waited outside Sephora for me while I did a bit of shopping. The branch in Phily had been closed and I'd long ago decided to treat myself before we left the States. Very unlike me, I'm far from a make-up addict. But sometimes it's nice to try new things and overall I've not bought much on this trip. We bought metro ... read more
