When the native Senecas gave Canandaigua Lake its name, they knew what they were talking about. It means "the chosen spot". What a great summer it was. We finally moved into the long-awaited cottage, and loved every minute there. We kept pinching ourselves - were we just renting this place, or was it really ours? It is so far from the bustle and pollution of Shanghai - such a contrast. I had dreamed of that first cup of coffee on the dock in the morning, followed by a cool morning dip. We had talked about relaxing on the deck at the end of the day with a glass of wine and family and good friends. Ahhh…. That first flush of the toilet was so gratifying after all those years of camping there with...well, with nothing! (Those ... read more

We have decided to store the boat under cover so we (however it will probably be mostly Bob as he is the one with the technical skills) can work on it over the winter. We decided that Lake Ontario winter’s do not lend themselves to getting anything done as you are too busy clapping your hands together to stay warm and dressed like the Michelin man to stay warm (speaking from last year’s winter experience). We looked at a number of places, but decided the best place was Beacon Bay Marina at the northeast end of Cayuga Lake, however, this means taking the boat through the Oswego-Seneca canal and part of the Erie Canal which takes us about 2 days. With Bob starting school on Tuesday, Sept 8th, Labor Day weekend was the only time that ... read more

Friends and Blog Readers, I just got word that Mina, the baby who's baptism we were privileged to witness and share with all of you, is in the hospital in Assiut, Egypt tonight. What I didn't tell you in my blog initially was that Mina was born with a hole in his heart and with asthma. Health in Egypt is not what it is here and so Mina will very likely die. When I spoke to my friend Kadry this evening he said, "I think he is dying tonight." Please pray for Mina as well as for his mother, Kadry's sister Amal, and her husband and their children. The baptism was not supposed to happen when we were there, but the reason it was moved ahead was that they had just learned of Mina's diagnosis. It ... read more

Dorothy had it right... there really is no place like home. I had my one week summer break from July 28- Aug 1, so I flew home to Mom and Dad's house and spent the most perfect, relaxing week with them. But before I carry-on about the excellence of the week, I'll back up a little and fill you in on some of the other details of my life. Dan is now at Fort Benning, Georgia, taking the Master Gunner course. The weekend before he left was his birthday so we decided to spend the whole weekend relaxing and enjoying each other's company. Friday night we just hung around our town, had pizza and beers, and watched a movie at home. Saturday we took the train into Seoul and saw the only English movie that was ... read more

Well, we're getting close here. Leaving tomorrow afternoon for California, and I'm still finishing up the last details. I spent pretty much the entire last two weekends working on DarkStar, getting ready to go. After a long list of repairs and preventative maintainence items, I think we're ready. Or at least as ready as possible: I got a little distracted for a while due the airshow over the weekend (I was working just a short distance from the airport), but everything is done and ready. Now I just have to make the last few reservations, pack up and hit the road. I'm hoping we can be on the road by 4:00 or so. Ian and I are driving straight through to Denver, were we'll stay overnight with some friends of his. But it'll be a long ... read more

Well, in just about one week I am setting out on my trip. The backstory: my teenage twin nieces are spending the summer in the San Francisco area with my sister and her family. At the end of the month, my brother-in-law Ian is flying from the Bay Area into Rochester, and we will then leave for California. Ian has some planned stops along the way, but we're only taking a few days to make the trip. After a few days visiting out there, the twins and I are going to turn around and head east. We plan to stretch it out to about 2 weeks, and stop to see a bunch of highlights along the way, visit some friends, etc. I've actually been planning all of this for about 6 months and am now starting ... read more

Just to let you all know that we arrived home safely about 11 pm on Saturday night. Our flights were uneventful and everything went very smoothly. Al Hamdu Lillah! Many, many thanks to all of you who have followed along on my time in Egypt. I will continue to keep this blog open for my future time in Egypt, but I will be posting on a less frequent basis. I can't wait to speak with you all in person and to share more of my experiences. What you have read here is just a capsule of what has been an amazing time in Egypt. The plans for the future continue to emerge and I will share those as they are known. One final note, when I got up this morning I received an e-mail from Sister ... read more

Empty Truth "But I'm still interested in sex," Raj replied, averting his eyes. "Sex is submitting to your desires,” Adam told him. At some point you are going to have to decide whether you want to be governed by your desires or whether you are going to overcome them." Adam spoke slowly and severely, as if analyzing his words, while still in the thought process, for any negative influences. Adam lowered his voice, conscious of the other students who all appeared to be asleep in the van. He sat against the back window next to Raj. Emily and Laura had also squeezed into the three-person bench. They had spent a long day of temple sightseeing. Adam thought that all of the temples looked the same. Raj was just excited for the chance to experience life ... read more

on a jaunt through the Finger Lakes, then off to Brattleboro followed by a stop at Boston. apparently, we love the snow. then a visit to Abu on the way home, of course. christmas was pleasant, barely a sole around, we've been occupying ourselves by skating, skiing and scavenging for food. those of you familiar with the classic "A Christmas Story", will appreciate the fact that xmas dinner was of the asian sort, sans duck. holiday cheers, kathryn... read more
