Suffering yet again from an abundance of time and sufficient gas money Karen and I decided to embark on a one month road trip. Head westward my liver spotted friends! We made our first stop in Pensacola Florida where we enjoyed the asceptic confines of a downtown hotel in the old section of the city. Our room was one of only five rented in the 100 room facility. Pensacola is a Navy aviator town. There are buff young men in abundance and wreaths of hopeful young women clustered around them. Think of 'Officer and a Gentleman' without the cardboard box factory. We ate at Jackson's Steakhouse where my friend Marc and I dined nearly a decade ago. Same great food and service without the pretentious bill. Ask for Antonio to be your waiter. The only genuinely ... read more

Just SW of Alamogordo is White Sands National Monument. This is at the SW corner of what was at one time a large lake. This lake today is part of the White Sands bombing range and way up north on this lake is where the first nuclear bomb was detonated (see photo of replica of bomb in Nuclear museum blog). But today people come to enjoy the beautiful pure white sand. Many bring their snow platters and use the dunes to go "scooting" down. This another "must see", if you are traveling this highway.... read more

An old Army buddy contacted me one summer and wanted to know if my wife Ann would be interested in selling Mary Kay skin care products. This old Army buddy was a Warrant Officer female who was selling Mary Kay skin care products in anticipation of her retirement. Apparently she was doing a very good job in skin care sales and already had her own sales team and a red car. My wife Ann, who was also friends with my old buddy, had a full time job that she enjoyed and was not interested in selling skin care products. I on the other hand was already retired from the Army and was between full time jobs. I asked my buddy if men were allowed to sell skin care products for Mary Kay. The answer was yes, ... read more

OK, we became "Those people": Sandra and I said when we started out that we didn't want to be "mission tourists" so we very purposely told our hosts in El Paso (the very gracious Bowmans of the BEAMM ministry) that we were there to check out the ministry and we didn't need to see any local tourist places. Thankfully, they didn't listen to us and took us to this beautiful spot which I highly recommend to anyone who is in the area. (The White Sands of New Mexico) I have just never seen anything quite like it. Super fine, talcum powder like sand in soft rolling hills with an unbelievable sunset and moonrise. Here are a few of the hundreds of pictures I took... read more

White Snow, White Sands and Missiles - Amazing Day Our Sacramento Mountain river camp site in Ruidoso stood at an altitude of 6000 feet. Overnight we had rain and sleet but all was sunny by Wednesday morning and off we went. To get over the mountains we had to go through the pass at an altitude of 8000 feet, and there was snow, lots of snow. It was a beautiful drive up through the pass and working our way down towards Alamogordo. Coming down off the mountain you could see the White Sands. From 40 miles away it looked like more snow; a long unbroken white stripe in the desert plateau between the Sacramento and San Andres Mountains. In Alamogordo we made a quick stop at the Museum of Space History. Turning into the road to ... read more

Feb 9 Noah and I slid out of Stace’s and Reed’s at 4 AM for the long drive to Alamogordo, New Mexico. The prior evening I watched as Noah, Reed and Stace played on the Wii system. Games of bowling, golf and tennis soon reduced the three of them into whirling grunting laughing human windmills. Noah and I thanked Reed and Stace for their wonderful hospitality. It was difficult to leave their comfortable home and Stace’s dinner table masterpieces but life moves on. I first met Stace when she was two years old. Now a practicing attorney in San Antonio it is gratifying to know that Karen and I played even a small part in her development into the great human being she’s become. I was happy to see strength of her relationship with her husband ... read more

Note: Havent been able to update the blog over the past few days.. Hotels without Internet, more hours of driving as we dropped off people along the way, and weeks of travel through changing weather, different altitudes and shifting time zones caught up with us eventually. Unfortunately, that means that I dont remember all the fun, whacky moments from the trip that made it such an enjoyable holiday :( Its those stories, those anecdotes that defined our trip, but nevertheless, heres an overview of what we did end up doing. ************************** We were initally planning to make 3 stops along the way before hitting Vegas on 30th - Roswell (famous for alien UFO landings in 1947) and Albuquerque in New Mexico, and then Flagstaff near the Grand Canyon in Arizona. But Sapna was interested in doing ... read more

The sands were AMAZING! After a few days in El Paso we decided to head over to White Sands National Monument for some fun among the sands. I have a great love of geological features and places so going to sands was an experience well needed. What struck me the most was that upon our arrival on a perfect day with clear azure skies was that the sands looked like snow. It was surreal expecting snow but feeling nothing but heat once you left your car. Also the sands are BLINDING! The sun reflecting off of them blinds you for the first half hour or so. Your eyes eventually get used to it but its quite painful at first. Waiting for your eyes to get used to it is worth it tho! The dunes and plants ... read more

New Mexico White Sands, Ruidoso and Tularosa Basin I headed to visit old friends and Chris on his assignment in New Mexico Dec 21-23, 2008. We went straight to the White Sands National Park in the Tularosa Basin. We spent time dune surfing, sliding and making sand angels in the gypsum powder deposited from the west winds of the San Andres Mountians. This 245 mile area doesn't drain as it has no water source. This was the area that the first atomic bomb detination site - Trinity in 1945. God blessed us with the same color palette of Joesph's technicolor dream coat. The next day we headed to Three Rivers Petroglyphs. This area has 21,000 etchings in all shapes and sizes from the Jornada Mogollon tribes from 1000-1400AD. This hike was breath taking with the ... read more

It was really dark outside when we woke up this morning in Holbrook and that could only mean one thing in Arizona, RAIN, RAIN and more RAIN !! We forced ourselves to get up even though we wanted to lay in bed all morning and listen to the rain beating down on the roof. By the time Tim finished unhooking everything on the RV, the rain had slowed a little, so we decided to stay at the KOA and enjoy some of their all-you-can-eat pancakes. It's kinda neat, because most all of the KOA's we've stayed at on this trip have these pancake breakfasts right there on site. You can get pancakes, sausage, coffee or juice, all for just $1.99 and it's all-you-can-eat. Of course, the pancakes are so huge you can only eat half of ... read more
