You may recall, that I left you all with a bit of a cliffhanger at the end of the last episode. How far away was Hurricane Lee? Would it hit Mount Desert Island before the Famous Four managed to get away? Would they all be stranded at the Kimball Terrace Inn and would they all have to hunker down in one room and listen to the wind whistling through the crack in Steve & Lily's balcony door? These questions and many more will be answered in this next thrilling episode of Gone with the Wind, meets The Perfect Storm, meets Twister and starring Claude Rains (yes he was a British actor from the 30s and 40s) playing Steve Forbes, Hurricane Higgins (in his acting debut) playing Paul Kilby, Michelle Gayle (once of Eastenders) playing Lily Forbes ... read more

Without a doubt will be the shortest entry I have probably ever written. We were "forced" to drive through New Hampshire on our way to Quebec City. Just a long weekend trip so we left our home base fairly late in the afternoon and made JACKSON, NH our destination for the night. We were able to get a room at the WENTWORTH RESORT HOTEL. Older hotel that is crazy busy during the winter apparently. Our room was huge (several rooms). We got up pretty early the next morning for a breakfast of crème brulee French toast with bacon and maple syrup and an omelet with potatoes, a blueberry muffin and fruit (all really good). We were going to golf, but it was rainy so we decided to hit the road. Right in front of the hotel ... read more

Saturday:A misty start to the day saw us catch the 10.30am Conway Scenic Steam Train - we took an open carriage on the outward leg, but let sense rule on the way and sat in a closed carriage. The trip was only 55 mins, but there was plenty of enthusiastic whistle blowing and between the commentary we were treated to a variety of American mountain music - fiddle, banjo & accordion! Afterwards we were soon taking advantage of much needed hot coffee and muffins!! Next on the itinerary was the Kancamagus Highway - a 35 miles stretch of road known for its scenery and foliage. It was a delight, and the icing on the cake was our bursting into sunshine and blue skies as we passed over a pass halfway along. We stopped at many viewpoints ... read more

Friday After a fond farewell to Rockport and some useful travelling advice from our host, we set off for the penultimate stage of our travels. When you buy petrol in Blighty, you fill up and then pop into the kiosk and pay - not over here. In this state certainly, you need to either pay by credit card before topping up or (as I eventually did) wander over to the kiosk and pay cash for your petrol and then go back and fill up. I guess this puts a top firmly on so called drive-offs. We enjoyed a leaf peeping 3hr drive, amusing ourselves with such signs as 'Avoid Moose - You'll Come Off Worse'. Courtesy of a friendly and talkative Tourist Information Officer we by-passed Conway - this had 3 pluses: avoiding the traffic jam, ... read more

We camped near Gorham, New Hampshire which is by the White Mountains. They were certainly not white while we were there but were blazing with color. Our plan was to go to the top of Mt Washington. We opted to take the guided tour rather than drive up ourselves, so that we could each spend time looking at the scenery rather than the road. The day we went was a beautiful day and visibility was 90 miles. The days before and after were rainy and foggy, so the tours couldn’t run or were limited to breaks in the weather. We had a half hour at the summit and that was plenty of time to look around, take pictures and get cold. The warmth of the van felt good after the wind and cold temps at the ... read more

HI, I bet you have been wondering where the heck we are….a day after our last venture out I got really sick and ended up having to leave the trail and go back to the last town we were at, to see a Dr. I was very sick and dehydrated….I had giardia…what an ugly word for an ugly illness. I wouldn’t wish it upon my worst enemy. For those of you not familiar with it, it is a parasite that you get from drinking contaminated water. We are still not sure how this happened or why Stephen didn’t get it and I did because we have been very good about cleaning our water…but who knows. We got a hotel room in Bingham, Maine and allowed a few days for me to recover. I got a few ... read more
