Geo: 40.8136, -96.7077If I said corn again today, would you believe me? I'm not lyen' , honest. We left Davenport, Iowa at 8:00 AM and 64 degrees. We got an early start today because we were up early, thanks to the time change. So, off we went, down the interstate, headed for Lincoln, Nebraska. We drove well over 300 miles through…ah…you guessed it, corn fields. I am now loving these corn fields. They are pretty, with the golden corn flowers blooming on each plant, casting a yellow haze over the fields like a shroud protecting the plants from the hot sun. As we moved further west, the flat planes began to roll a bit with small hills, undulating ever so gently over the ground. And by the time we reached the other side of the state, ... read more

As we crossed the border into Nebraska we stopped at the Visitor Centre and chatted to Randy who worked part time whilst his wife was the local minister. The building was in the middle of nowhere but apparently used to be a chain burger-bar- not sure who ate there though as there did not seem to be any houses around for miles. It was different to most others VC we had been in, the layout was more like a ‘home’, including lounge sofas and lots of ornaments and memorabilia. We had coffee which was free and help yourself to what you want and we chatted to Randy for ages before heading off with a pile of brochures he insisted we would need about Nebraska and the area as well as some useful advice. We were following ... read more

Herman Reinders Lived and worked his farm near Alliance Nebraska until his death in 1982. As friends and family gathered to pay respects to him, there were discussions of a memorial. In June of 1987 35 of his friends and family gathered and built Carhenge. It was officially dedicated on the Summer solstice in 1987. I visited Carhenge the first time in 2007. Although not much has changed in the past 7 years I couldn't resist a return visit. Carhenge will be in the path of the Solar eclipse of August 21, 2017, Maybe a 3rd visit will be in order. The Planes were at Wings over the Rockies Air and Space Museum. Shown here is one of the X-Wing Fighters used to defend Colorado from the Empire. The Trains Autos and Bikes were at the Forney Transportation Museum on the North Side of Denver, They literally had cars of all shapes and sizes. Wait, thats no ordinary Buffalo, that's a Cell Tower. After the museums I headed north out of Colorado and into Nebraska. I ended up in Scottsbluff which is about an hour from.... CARHENGE! BTW: I'm in Southwest Nebraska, The Tornadoes today were in Northeast Nebraska, tomo... read more

Geo: 41.1281, -101.719Alright, alright, alright.....we made it to Lake McConaughy in Nebraska. It is a beautiful 30,000 acre lake surrounded by sand beaches and campgrounds. But, it was not without some effort to get here. We drove through a torrential downpour in the middle of the plains of Nebraska, with some insane wind, and a little bit of hail. Everyone was doing about 35 on the interstate, and we actually pulled off in a rest area for a few minutes until the rain and wind let up. There were some nasty clouds too....we were looking for a funnel cloud but never saw one.The rest of the drive was great....a little gusty but very flat. And, we are now in the mountain time zone. Off to Wyoming tomorrow.... read more

Geo: 40.8136, -96.7077After a 4 hour drive from Missouri, through the southwest corner of Iowa, and into Nebraska, we arrived at Lincoln. We found a campground about 3 miles from campus, and checked in. We then drove back to campus and walked around. It was a large campus with all of the academic buildings co-located, and the football stadium right on the edge of campus. There is a cool area right off campus called Haymarket District with plenty of restaurants and bars. That is where we had lunch before heading back to the campground. We rode our bikes to a local sports bar for dinner and to watch UVA in the baseball championships, and the NBA Western ... read more

Left on a Saturday and back the next. I always try to do my road trips in a circle with as little back tracking as possible or going somewhere we have already gone. North from Texas straight up through Oklahoma, Kansas and half way into Nebraska. Then Northwest the rest of Nebraska into the South Dakota. 2 nights in South Dakota. Then West to Wyoming and three nights in Cody, Wy as our base for Yellowstone. Then Southwest down through to Colorado and a night in Cripple Creek, Co. Then home the next day cutting across the corner of New Mexico and West Texas. Really today was just a big driving day. Made our way to just over the Kansas border before lunch time. Stopped at McDonald's for lunch then since we were making good time ... read more
