Great Falls. None today. Although there should have been several. Why? Our plans to go to Yellowstone aborted because most roads in the park are still closed. So, new day, same crappy food. Haven't seen a whole grain since we left Canada. Overcast and cooler. Apparently the romance has gone. Forecast called for scattered light showers. Apparently crappy forecast. Delayed early start today out of our control because we wanted to have my bike checked out for vibration issues. No fix other than to remove engine guards. No can do. No spare bolts. New plan to go to Havre, MT, yes East, attempting to get back on track with our original plan to ride Highway 2 across. Chose an obscure highway #200. This will take us through the town of Lincoln, Great Falls and eventually into ... read more

Can you believe it? this is the last post in this particular segment – the end of the original “Biggest Ball of String Tour.” Not that I’m done writing. Next, we are moving on to one of our trips to Michigan. Technically, we could’ve driven home from Butte, but 1) my cousin and her husband had come to visit us there, so we wanted to leave Butte leisurely, and not on a specific schedule, and 2) we didn’t want our road trip to be over! So, we meandered to Great Falls, which is only 2 1/2 hours from Butte! (By the way, this is the point where we sadly had to say "see you soon" to Brian and Taunya and crew, as they headed back towards Seattle.) Besides, we’d never really spent any time in Great ... read more

Anxiety rose along with the elevation as we drove toward the heart of Montana today, making our way from Billings to Great Falls. The growing tension inside the Rasmussen Silverado had nothing to do with the previous night’s conversation, when, over strawberry daiquiris and the Outback Steakhouse's signature “blooming onion,” I chose to defended my particular political heresy against my parents’ orthodoxy. No! It was the upcoming Tour de Dad – that heroes’ quest – that cast such a long shadow. The wondrous mapping tools of our modern world provided my parents little security in that Silverado. Maps were double and triple checked and still the path remained obscure. Questions were asked, answered, and asked again. Certainty, it seemed, was all but impossible. “I wanna know where I’m going!” became a frequent comment. Outside, the plains ... read more

We visited Great Falls and were pleasantly surprised at the city and it's historical perspectives. We spent the afternoon at a most interesting exhibition of Lewis and Clark. The Missouri River that they faced in this part of the country was challenging for them as they ventured up the Missourri. What did they find? Great Falls..... We saw them and marveled. Also visited the healing springs that brought Sakajawea back to health after her near death illness. She was a hell of a woman. Another visit was to the Charlie Russel museum, he was a famous painter of the Old West lifestyle and did he portray it beautifully in his work. We also visited his Studio and the home him and his wife Nancy lived in. Enjoyed it immensely. One more interesting stop was at the ... read more

So it is official...the Evans family is on the road to the trip of a lifetime, ALASKA. ! We left Whitehall at 4:30pm on Thursday, June 28 for a 6-7 week trip that will take us through the Canadian Provinces of Alberta, British Columbia and The Yukon and all around Alaska, otherwise known as, The Last Frontier. For us half the fun will be the long drive there because we plan to see some amazing places in Canada, like Banff and Jasper National Parks and great destinations all along the Alaskan Highway(ALCAN). When we left Whitehall it was a sweltering 87', but that was nothing compared to the 97' as we crossed into Illinois at 7:30pm. Aaron made great time driving crossing into Iowa at 10:30 and a rest stop in Davenport, Iowa was our campground ... read more

We have all of our traveling companions now. Yesterday I added a picture of Becky and Larry. That makes 10 of us traveling in four rv's. We had another beautiful day in Montana. We went to the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail Interpretive Center. Very interestiing. We were there 3 hours and could spend days. Lewis and Clark travelled 4000 miles in 18 months - think they made very good time! We went to Fudrucker's for lunch. I had my first buffalo burger. Very good. Tonight we had another good potluck meal. We have some very good cooks in our group. Tomorrow we are heading for Canada. Don't know how often I will be able to add to the blog when we are in Canada. It is just after 10:00 and it just turned dark. ... read more

Another beautiful day in Montana. Was 47 this morning. Now 79. We had a nice potluck dinner last evening. Good food and good companionship. We went to see the four falls that are here on the Missouri river. The Missouri river empties into the Mississippi at St.Louis. These falls produce hydroelectric power. We were planning to leave tomorrow but think we will stay one more day. I had a new experience last night and this morning. As I said yesterday, we are next to an Air Force base. Last night at 10:00 they played taps and this morning at 7:00 they play revelie(sp?). Disclaimer - I am not responsible for misspelled words or typo's.... read more

I am writing this blog for three days as we did not have any internet since Sunday night. As I previously noted, we were having trouble with the motor home - thought it was transmission problems. We started out Monday morning from Sturgis, SD. We were going to Devil's Tower but Jim thought we should go on to Gillette, WY to see if we could get the motor home fixed. Our other travel companions went on to Devil's Tower. Jim and I went to the Cummins shop in Gillette. We were very happy to learn that all the problem was a clogged gas filter. Was clogged with algae. They replace the filters and we were able to go on to our campground. Meanwhile, Jerry and Carolyn's motor home got low on diseal and just quit because ... read more

Monday, August 15th 64 degrees and rainy at 9:15. Rained on and off all night. Some blue can be seen in the south and east. Great Falls Wal-mart parking lot. Mileage is 15095. Drove to the Charles Russell Museum a few blocks in a residential area from where we were. The museum has a large collection of Russell's paintings and is organized in five galleries by dates, which show the changes in his style from a young man until he died in 1926. Russell came to Montana from a wealthy St. Louis family and worked as a cow hand on several ranches in the Judith River Valley and other areas near Great Falls until he was famous enough to make his living as an artist. He was a great painter in watercolor and oils of cowboys, ... read more

Whitewater Rafting. Gathering at 5:45 AM we sign the necessary waivers and board vans for an hour and a half ride across the plains and into the mountains, crossing the Continental Divide at Rogers Pass. This is an excursion put on by Malmstrom AFB's Outdoor Recreation Dept which provides all the gear and guides. We begin donning our wetsuits, PFDs, helmets, etc and receive a very thorough safety briefing. We're told that the water is 58 degrees (the soakings we receive later feel a lot colder) but that doesn't stop some of the younger folks from taking a volunteer swim. Our first 7 miles is a smooth paddle as we learn how to sit on the side of the inflatable, jamming our feet into the space between the floor and sides as an anchor, and paddle ... read more
