We had a bit of a late start, since I had to deal with finding an emergency replacement for a museum docent today! We were going to hike to Avalanche Lake and then go to Logan Pass and hike Hidden Lake trail, but there wasn't time for both and the sun never came out as promised... The Avalanche Lake Trail was busy, but in grizzly bear country, this is something to be desired! The trail is 4 miles roundtrip with 500 feet of elevation gain, so it is quite easy, and beautiful. There were many Europeans on the trail, along with families and couples of all ages. We saw a one woman by herself, but she was doing trail running. You are told not to hike alone here! The outhouses at the lake have to be ... read more

"The region that became Glacier National Park was first inhabited by Native Americans. Upon the arrival of European explorers, it was dominated by the Blackfeet in the east and the Flathead in the western regions. Under pressure the Blackfoot ceded the mountainous parts of their treaty lands in 1895 to the federal government; it later became part of the park. Soon after the establishment of the park on May 11, 1910, a number of hotels and chalets were constructed by the Great Northern Railway. These historic hotels and chalets are listed as url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Hist... read more

42 degrees when we started our trek this morning. Our goal for the day was to drive the Going to the Sun Road & take in as many sites along the way as possible. The road is narrow & winds its way up to Logan Pass, then goes down to St. Mary. The views of the mountains, lakes, & falls were majestic. Yes, we are possibly getting overloaded on beautiful scenery. Hopefully my pictures will share some of this beauty. We had lunch overlooking Lake St. Mary at the Snowgoose Grill. Since we were less than 40 miles from the Canadian border, we decided to head to Waterton Lakes International Peace Park & check out Waterton Village & Red Rock Canyon. Had to stay alert as several times we were surprised by cattle grazing right beside ... read more

Spent some time this morning enjoying our surroundings at Butler Creek Lodge outside Missoula. Our hosts provided muffins, fruit, cereal & coffee. It was nice to sit outside & enjoy nature. We pulled out at 10:40, heading north on State Rt. 93 thru the National Bison Range next to the Mission Mountain Range. At Polson, MT we turned onto State Route 35 and travelled along Flathead Lake on the left and the mountains on our right. There were cherry stands all along the road, unfortunately, cherry season had ended. When we reached Glacier NP about 1:30, we decided to drive the South Loop from West Glacier to somewhere close to East Glacier. We crossed the Continental Divide at Maria's Pass and when we reached Summit, MT we retraced our path & headed back. The railroad paralleled ... read more

It has been three years since my last real backpacking trip. I badly needed to disconnect, and after a year or two of delay, I finally fulfilled a longtime wish of visiting Glacier National Park. For us city-folk, Glacier was hard to access. Two flights and a 4-hour-drive brought us into the heart of the park. But difficult access usually means handsome reward. Driving down Going to the Sun Road, we were treated with awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping vistas, and schooled once again in the phrase “God’s Country”. Waterfalls, lakes, glaciers and jagged cliffs abound, bringing much needed refreshment to the soul. I was traveling with four others, all first-timers that were dear friends and close brothers. Our first day was spent day hiking The Loop trail (8-10 miles round trip with about 2-3k feet of elevation gain/loss). ... read more

Idaho for Montana at 8 AM. Crystal clear blue skies and temp was 53 degrees. Nice Entered Glacier Park at the west gate and was immediately greeted by a beautiful lake. Took 3 hours to get through the park on "The road to the sun" and was so close to many waterfalls while riding that you can actually reach out and touch them. One of the most spectacular national parks. May pics Out of the park at the East gate and to hwy 89 south to hook back up to 2 east. 89 South has more curves and I mean tight curves in 35 miles than the Dragon in Tennesee. Took 2 east and temps got up to 90 so drank lots of water. 2 East is a road I have never ridden before. I like ... read more

Today, we set out from West Glacier to Helena, Montana. We planned on taking the scenic drive through the park instead of the much quicker drive around the southern end. We entered the park from the West Glacier entrance around 9:30am (it was definitely less crowded than on previous days when we'd arrived at 11am). We turned right to follow Going-to-the-Sun Road, which would lead all the way through to the other side of the park and exit at St. Mary. I wanted to see the Weeping Wall, and so that was the first stop we made. I was surprised to see it's literally right on the road! People driving from east to west get wet from the wall. Unfortunately, we couldn't exactly stop right there to see it. There's no safe way to walk to ... read more

The main route people take from West Glacier into Glacier National Park is the route we took yesterday: Going-to-the-Sun Road, which winds along Lake McDonald. The roads there are paved and wide, lined with many turnouts to park in (many of which are completely full of cars). We decided to turn left at the Apgar Village junction and head northwest on Camas Road. It was paved but not very busy. There were "Exhibit" turnoffs where we could stop the car, get out, and read about features of Glacier National Park. We saw only one other car at one of those turn-offs. It really was a much quieter route. The road ended at North Fork Road, which was unpaved but well taken care of. We took North Fork Road north a long while to Polebridge. Polebridge got ... read more

We're staying in West Glacier, and so we decided to check out some of the nearby sites at Glacier National Park today. To the north of Lake McDonald, on Going-to-the-Sun Road (open seasonally), we stopped at the Avalanche Creek picnic area to have a little picnic. After the kids ate, we walked down to the shore of the river that feeds into Lake McDonald, and we skipped stones into the water. There were stunning views of the mountains and forest, making it a fun and picturesque stop. When we were ready to head out, we crossed the road over to Trail of the Cedars. It's a fairly busy, easy-to-navigate trail that is about 4/5 of a mile loop. We were able to easily do it with our group that included a 2, 3, and 4 year ... read more

Our third day in Montana, we dedicated to visiting Glacier National Park. We started the day by going to breakfast at Echo Lake Café, a nearby roadside restaurant that specialized in the most amazing Breakfast Burrito I've ever had. An enormous flour tortilla filled with scrambled eggs, jack cheese, sautéed mushrooms, green peppers, onions, homemade Chorizo, tomatoes and black olives. They topped it with ranchero sauce and sour cream! Add to that home-fried potatoes. Needless to say, we ended up with to go boxes for a good portion of the meal! Afterwards, we made our way to the park, which met all our expectations as far as beautiful and spectacular views. We took the fabled Going-to-the-Sun Road, an incredible piece of engineering that took us through amazing views, steadily climbing to cross the Continental Divide. Unfortunately, ... read more
