Today we said goodbye to Illinois early in the morning and rode our bikes across the massive Mississippi River into Missouri. We anticipated one opportunity to fill our water bottles at the twelve mile point in St Mary, and then we would see nothing but rural roads and farms for 38 miles until reaching Farmington. As we were taking a break at the Convenience Store in St. Mary, another cyclist named Robbie pulled up outside. I mentioned meeting Robbie a couple of days ago as I was on my way to Carbondale. At that point we decided to continue to Farmington together. We made good time going up and down the steep hills. The hills were challenging but after Kentucky they seemed less daunting in comparison. Bruce of course, while riding his carbon Focus bicycle with ... read more

... read more

Beautomous! Made it in to camp late, got situated and was sent to sleep to the song of whipporwhils! Couldn't ask for more! Fantastic day hiking at Hawn! Lots of wild azaleas up on the glade! Woods are gorgeous and the storms lovely. Onwards in the rain to Eric's farm outside of Columbia. 76 miles to go! Perhaps stop at Flat Branch for a beer and maybe take the River road to his place and catch up with old friends! ***************************************************************** I would meet you anywhere, western sun meets the air, hit the road, never looking behind. ~Son Volt ... read more

It may have been cold at night, but my camping trip to the Lead Belt was worth the frostbite. The Ozarks are a beautiful part of the nation. I can't believe how the land transforms so quickly once you get out of St. Louis. Granted, I live in the flattest part of the flattest state ever so any sort of elevation gets a rise out of me, but these mountains were truly a sight to see. Not to mention I believe I picked the best time to go to the Ozarks - the fall foliage colors were so vibrant and diverse; it was phenomenal. We camped at St. Joe's State Park, which in itself was an experience. St. Joe's apparently is the ORV camp capital of the new world. Now, I'm in no way opposed to ... read more
