Today I am going to talk about things I have seen along the road thus far; some simple, some great, all extraordinary. As I left Wilmington on Martin Luther King Blvd, the beautiful fields of flowers along the sides and in the median set my mood for the day. The red, pink, and a few white poppies look stunning, and every time I see them I look for Dorothy and the three skipping down the yellow brick road. I like to think the county has knowingly planted those large beds to attract and breed bees. When I crossed over into Leland…..the road is done!!! I think that was the first time there was no traffic due to construction in either direction since I relocated. It was an easy trip to Columbia, SC. I had hoped to ... read more

Geo: 32.365, -88.7031We had breakfast in the hotel then headed up to Center Hill for the Rogers Reunion at Chet's shop. We had a great time visiting with lots of people. I did not get around to talking with everyone, but did get to visit some with Lou Ella, Janet, Chet, Connie, Dawn, Yvonne, Dinah, Zena, and the only person I knew very well before, Lisa. Chet was a great host and provided a beautiful spread for lunch supplemented by pot luck dishes shared by many. I don't know who all helped provide the lunch. It was delicious.Phil was able to visit with the oldest generation members, Lou Ella and Janet, so they could corroborate some of his research. Lou Ella and Zena had old photos and memorabilia to show, including a math notebook written in ... read more

Geo: 32.365, -88.7031We've been on the road for most of three days and arrived in Meridian this afternoon. The drive was fine the whole way with overnight stops at the Hilton Garden Inn in Amarillo then the Hampton in Sulphur Springs. The traffic north of Dallas slowed us down some, but when we got east of the metro area, traffic thinned out and sped up. The best food we found on the road was lunch in Childress yesterday at Top Notch Texas BBQ. When we arrived, the restaurant looked closed from the outside. The front door opened though and one person was inside eating. The service was great and food even better. We're looking forward to seeing the Rogers folks tomorrow. ... read more

The drive from Gunter Hill Campground on R.E. (Bob) Woodruff Lake in Montgomery AL to Benchmark RV Park in Marion MS took me back over the Selma to Montgomery Trail until I reached Selma when I began to see some new real estate. The drive of about 157 miles and about 3 hours was without incident, and my arrival at Benchmark RV Park was, thankfully, routine. I had a very short list for Meridian, particularly when compared to the ambitious list I had the week prior, and started at the Mississippi Industrial Heritage Museumat the historic Soulé Steam Feed Works in Meridian MS. I was somewhat puzzled by the term “steam feed.” The majority of products invented by George W. Soulé and manufactured and marketed by his company served the lumber industry. Because steam was the ... read more

Happened before after having tires rotated. With a little apprehension or a unenthusiastic motivation, we made our way to or through Meridian, Mississippi. It was on our route but it was also where my brother and his family was stationed in the Navy at one point. My dad and I drove down to visit them on base while they were there and I thought it meaningful to make that our Mississippi stop with little hope for much to write about considering everyone including my family who lived there questioned, "Why?" We did hit a band of rain ... read more
