10/10/15 Day 22 Hiking Day 16 The sound of a train horn woke me up early but I went back to sleep until 7:15am. It felt good to sleep in and I didn’t have to be on the trail early because I only had about five miles to get to Hwy 2 and the Reeves Road parking lot. It was an easy walk even though I had to traverse a wet snowmobile trail, which got my boots damp again. I met Maureen just before noon – it was good to see her again. She brought plenty of supplies and a cold beer, which didn’t last long. She also brought lunch and that along with the snack and beer I had already consumed made for a tired sleepy hike in the afternoon. With only 52 miles to ... read more

10/05/15 Day 17 Hiking Day 11 We were up early and had a good breakfast with coffee and tea. With an early start and taking the scenic County Highway 6, we were in Finland before 8am. I was back on the trail with a heavy pack and made good time on a level trail through a maple forest. I passed the biggest glacial erratic I’ve ever seen. It was at least 20ft tall. I put my hiking poles next to it for some scale. At a large beaver pond / meadow, there was a bench with trial log book where I stopped for a snack and left a note. I saw that Andy and Nels had left a note in this trail log. After the trail reaches Section 13 it become very hilly and rugged with ... read more

9/29/15 Day 11 Hiking Day 7 I was up before sun rise at Lake Agnes on a chilly, clear, calm morning. Watched the sun rise and the full moon was still in the western sky. A great start to the day. Packed up and said good bye to camp mates and hit the trail around 8:30am. Signed the trail log at Lake Agnes overlook and read others entries. Enjoyed the great views of the almost peak fall colors. Had a snack at West Poplar River camp and just after I got back on the trail I saw a male grouse trying to impress a couple of female grouse. Passed by Lutsen ski area access road and Poplar River bridge. Climbed huge hill – Moose Mountain – and had lunch on a flat rock on top in ... read more

This portion of my adventure was the BWCA trip. I typically go on a trip with some friends and my son each year during the last weekend in September. Its usually an easier trip that targets lake trout fishing and bird hunting. There is always lots of good food, laughs and stories from the years of BWCA and Quetico trips. I thought I would have to miss the trip due to the SHT hike but my son and friends were kind enough to offer to pick me up off the trail and drop me back where they found me after the canoe trip. It was also a chance for me to have them bring a food resupply for the next phase of my hike. It made for interesting conversations with other hikers I encountered. After telling ... read more

Today was the first completely unplanned day of this road trip - I didn't expect even to set foot in Minnesota, but thanks to an unexpected message from a friend, my trip took this detour. And it was a very good day. I did a lot of driving, but it didn't really seem like that much (except in road work; see below). One of the benefits of driving through Minnesota during this time of year is all the great foliage you can see. The leaves are changing colors, and at times it can be almost as distracting as those mountains and badlands from further out west. The best display of foliage I saw today was at St. Olaf College, but I'm getting ahead of myself. I left my hotel in South Dakota before dawn, and I ... read more

9/22/15 Day 4 Hiking Day 4 Woke up at Kimball Creek camp to another beautiful day. It was warm overnight and I slept until 7am. I’m starting to get in to a packing routine, which consists of packing clothes and sleeping stuff first thing when I get up. I then pack up the tent and load everything in the pack except food and cookware which go in last. After a breakfast of oatmeal and tea, the food is packed and its time to hit the trail. All this usually takes about 60 – 90 minutes. This stretch of SHT is really nice without the mud from yesterday. Great vistas of Lake Superior throughout a string of grassy meadows. Called Maureen from one of the meadows – it is good to hear her voice. I wish she ... read more

I am in the process of typing up my notes from my trip journal. They are organized by date, day of my trip and finally hiking day. I will be adding posts as I get the notes typed. This post has the first three days. 9/19/15 Day 1 Hiking Day 1 Stayed at Ella’s (VRBO) in Grand Marais after the Mountain Stage concert last night at North House Folk School. We packed and left by 8am, arriving at Otter Lake Road SHT parking lot around 10am. Maureen and I walked a little over a mile to the northern terminus of the SHT where it connects to the Border Route Hiking Trail. On a beautiful sunny day, we took pictures and signed the trail log book at a spot called 270 degree lookout. It was a beautiful ... read more

Andy is spending his last night on the trail at the Lone Tree campsite after a 17-mile push in wet weather. He encountered stretches of clear-cut land just at the times the skies produced rain showers, enhanced by gusty winds. Many of the campsites on the trail are literally ON the trail, including Lone Tree, and this one has the added feature of signs of 4-wheeler activity. But Andy figures 17 miles are enough for one day. That leaves just 16 more before his feet take him back to his home sweet home. He's undaunted but ready to shed those hiking boots. What an accomplishment, and what a great start to retirement. Stay tuned for more details as Andy takes to the keyboard again and reflects on his odyssey.... read more

Its finally over! I made it home today at 2:30pm after hiking the last 16 miles. It was really nice to be able to walk home and not have to rely on a ride or drive myself. It was strange to walk with my pack on the familiar trails near my house. Usually I am hiking without a pack, biking or trail running on those trails. My thoughts as I was finishing the final miles was that the full hike was much harder than I thought it would be. When planning this trip, I thought I would be able to cover more miles in a day or not feel as sore or tired as I did at the end of each day. But I think that is the reality of many outdoor trips we plan. Overall, ... read more

Andy is in the home stretch, with under 50 miles to go. He's been up the shore for 24 days now, sleeping on the ground and eating his meals outdoors for all but three of them. He's feeling some of the aches associated with constantly bending down to set up and take down camp, cook on a low surface, and keep a campfire going, and he's a little grizzled after not having shaven for a week, but otherwise, he looks hale and hearty. On this last stretch he's met quite a few people who are working on hiking the length of the trail in bits and pieces, but not any other through-hikers. He met one young solo hiker, a woman who had never done anything like it by herself before. What a different world. The food ... read more
