My last trip to Traverse City over Memorial Day weekend was amazing as usual. If you haven't already seen my profile, Traverse City, Michigan is one of my absolute favorite places in the world. There is so much to do! The last time I was there, I took my golden retriever with me. He had a blast, as he usually does. He loves to play fetch in the Grand Traverse Bay, which is part of Lake Michigan. I would throw tennis balls out into the Bay and he would swim after them. It was so cute! I also went fishing, but did not catch anything worth keeping. Oh well. Hopefully I will have better luck next time. I saw this amazing house in Traverse, which I think may be a sea captain's house. I watched a ... read more

I had a spectacular time in Michigan. There I said it. I started off on a positive note. So forgive me now if I sound a little negative about the state itself. Honestly, after spending a few days there I came quickly to the conclusion that the best thing about Michigan is Brendan O'Donnel and the Tall Ship crew in Traverse City. I will fast-forward through the hell-ish traffic around Detroit, the huge gas guzzling cars, the claustrophobic and expensive camping experience in a MI state park, the price-gouging touristy town of Traverse city, to the amazing time I actually had while I was there. I checked into the B+B on the Manitou in the early evening on a Friday night. Basically, my friend Brendan is the 1st mate on a replica of a historic sailing ... read more

There are hundreds of golf courses here ranging in price from about $27 to well over $200 per person per round. We prefer under $50 if we can find it since we both play golf. It gets to be a very expensive sport if we both spend over $100 each to play. We play every Monday in a league here at the resort and then we have been playing every Friday and/or Sunday afternoon at a new club that is quite challenging and beautiful. It is called "The Crown".... read more

We have been waiting for the weather to clear so that we could venture north to Charlevoix, Petosky and Mackinac Island area. It has been raining here for over a week and today was THE day to venture out into the sunshine! Charlevoix is a picturesque little village along Lake Michigan. Many famous people have summer homes here including Madonna, Tom Selleck, Michael Jordan, and other millionaires from around the world. It is a beautiful small village with flower lined streets, Lake Charlevoix, and a drawbridge located between lake Charlevoix and Lake Michigan. Venturing on to Petosky, another small quaint town just north of Charlevoix, we found the same flower lined streets and many art galleries and restaurants are located in the village by the water. What a gorgeous place. From there up through Mackinac ... read more

The Cherry Festival is the largest festival of the summer in the Traverse City area. Everything in the world you can think of that can be made of cherries will be found here. We tried a little salmon with cherry sauce and merlot wine. Delicious. Of course it was a meal to remember and the cherry almond ice cream at the end was to die for ! One of the main highlights of the festival was the air show and the performance of the "Blue Angels". It was a show to remember. What beautiful aircraft and precision flying! These guys are amazing ! There were thousands of people here at the beach to see the show but we had the primo spot in the shade right out on the water..............fabulous! It is impossible without special cameras ... read more

Michigan is well known for it's wonderful wine and this region has many great wineries. We visited a few and did a little wine tasting. Of course we purchased a few bottles and some wine glasses just to prove we had been there. The Leelanau area is full of wineries. We visited the Chateau Chantal and Grand Traverse Winery. It is a beautiful area surrounded by Lake Michigan and will remind you of the hills around Napa Valley. Visiting the Old Mission Peninsula we toured the old Mission Lighthouse and the Hesler Log Home. The Hesler log house is a rare original log home dating from the early settlement of the peninsula in 1851. Joseph and Mary Hesler built the home of hand hewn pine and hemlock logs retrieved 14 miles south of here and ... read more

Well, they are here safe and sound ! Off to collect the fishing equipment and licenses and hunt for the big ones! Our first fishing experience was on Lake Skegemog here in Traverse City. It is a beautiful lake with lots of large bass and the mayflies were hatching so the fish were biting and taking our lures. Bill landed several big ones, but Patti wasn't that fortunate. Just a few little ones. We went out on a bass boat with our neighbor Jerry and he caught all the big ones! He has been fishing this area for many years and has his special hide-a-way here at Lake Skegemog. Now, this guy knows how to fish for bass! He has every lure, worm, hook and weight known to mankind and he knows exactly how to use ... read more

Time is such an odd thing when you hold a definition to it. In no less than 10 Earth days Mike and I will begin our cross country travels. Being that its Christmas, our "to-do-before-we-go" list is exponentially more intimidating than it might've been this summer. I'm pretty sure we're both looking forward to a long exhale once we get on the train. We hope you'll stick with us for the journey...... read more
