Colorado is so amazing. I don't even have the words to describe. Everyday here I have done something amazing. Mostly rafting with Carla's amazing friends and coworkers, or mountain biking, or hiking in some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. If you have never been to the rockies, here or in Wyoming or Montana, you have to go. It is truly America's most spectacular scenery. Amazing. I can only let the pictures speak for themselves.... read more

I had a spectacular time in Michigan. There I said it. I started off on a positive note. So forgive me now if I sound a little negative about the state itself. Honestly, after spending a few days there I came quickly to the conclusion that the best thing about Michigan is Brendan O'Donnel and the Tall Ship crew in Traverse City. I will fast-forward through the hell-ish traffic around Detroit, the huge gas guzzling cars, the claustrophobic and expensive camping experience in a MI state park, the price-gouging touristy town of Traverse city, to the amazing time I actually had while I was there. I checked into the B+B on the Manitou in the early evening on a Friday night. Basically, my friend Brendan is the 1st mate on a replica of a historic sailing ... read more

On July 18th 2008 I got in my car and drove away. Again. But this time its a little different. I'm flying solo this time. And I have quite a bit more experience at this sort of thing than from the last time I drove across North America. This is the beginning of USA Roadtrip, take 2. 4 weeks, 4 distinct locations (and bits and bobs inbetween). And all by myself. After an easy 8 hour drive, I arrived in Elk Park, North Carolina. First destination was the mountains of North Carolina to do a little rockclimbing. Over the next 4 days became a lesson not so much in climbing but in living in the moment. My friend Evan greeted me in the tiny little town and took me to his house outside of town. Evan ... read more

Machu Picchu. I met a guy on the bus to Cuzco from Copacabana who was also headed to Machu Picchu, and we undertook the long journey to Machu Picchu. The journey isn´t actually long, but seeing as how my friend was short on cash we decided to take the cheap route. I do not reccommend the cheap route. 13 hours on a bus to some town in the jungle where we then took the most jam packed micro I have ever taken for more than 2 hours (I ended up crying during this journey, we were packed in like animals, 23 people in a van), then 3 hours of walking to Aguas Calientes, which is the town at the base of Machu Picchu. We arrived in the city at 6pm, 22 hours after we had ... read more

I arrived in Copacabana from La Paz having no expectation and about $12 to my name (in Bolivianos) because I thought I was headed straight for Peru. Well, like one artesano put it, I got trapped in Copacabana for two reasons. The first is that I liked it there, and the second is that I had to wait for the bank to open because there is no ATM in Copacabana. Copacabana lies on the shore of Lake Titicaca, and the altitude is high enough to make me woozy anytime I needed to walk up stairs or a hill or something. I spent a lazy few days wandering around the touristy town, drinking beer and eating trout along the shore, and hanging out with an awesome Argentinian called Veronica. I decided to join Veronica on her ... read more

I met up with some friends from Cochabamba in La Paz to celebrate the New Year of the Aymara (aka Winter Solstice). This is a celebration of the winter solstice/shortest day of the year/new year. It was freezing, it was dark, it was crowded, and I´m pretty sure that everyone had a great time. I know I did. We arrived from La Paz around 7 at night, got the last room in a hotel (2 single beds for 7 people...we weren´t planning on sleeping much) and then headed out into the night. We grabbed some food (cow heart and potatos in peanut sauce, mmmm...) and then went to join the growing crowd in the main plaza of the town, where there was a free concert happening. We started off the evening sitting in a tent ... read more

Cochabamba, or Cbba, for short. We´ve had good times (paragliding, rock climbing, monkey in my shirt), we´ve had bad times (broken bike, attempted french-kiss from 80 yr old, chicha), but all in all its been good. I have been living a working in Cochabamba, Bolivia for about a month now. Its been relaxing, fun, and mostly a wonderful learning experience. The main attraction to Cbba is the climate. It hasn´t rained once since I have been here. During the days I sweat in my pants, and at night it cools down enough to need a sweater. But in general its about the closest thing to perfect weather that you could ask for. And the surrounding mountains rise dramatically on all sides. Nice to look at, nice to be in, I can understand why people recommended ... read more

Today is my 8th day in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. The previous week has been one of the best during my time in South America. I had the really good fortune of being able to meet up with my friend Carla, who I began my trip with. Carla met and became friends with a group of artesanos here in Bolivia and has been traveling with them for the past month. It was great to able to tag along, hang out with, and learn a little spanish from these amazing people. Artesanos are awesome. They seem to be part hippie, part backpacker, part circus performer, part artist. They make jewelery from simple silver earrings with exotic stones and feathers to the most complicated macramae jewelery you have ever seen. They become masters at juggling balls, juggling machetes, ... read more

Despite warnings from people that Bolivia was closed due to protests involving burning cars and barricades, I made the crossing from La Quiaca to Villazon (by foot, over a bridge) very easily and found myself pretty shocked by what I found on the other side of the border. ( Note: Shock when you are traveling is actually a good thing, so I must make a note here that when I use words like ¨strange,¨ ¨weird,¨ ¨crazy,¨etc, that they are part of the experience and in reality describe the sorts of things that I enjoy coming across while traveling. This note is brought on by my experience of getting yelled at by a neurotic American girl from California to describe an aspect of South America culture as ¨strange.¨ I like strange things, just for the record) ... read more

Salta backwards is atlas

(Note: I did have a massive detailed description of my time in Salta typed up but the internet in Tupiza is CRAP and I am stupid and lost it. Sorry its so short but I am too lazy to retype it) I would definitely characterize my travel style the last few weeks in central Argentina as ¨city hopping¨and to be honest it left me a little travel-weary. But the city of Salta was a welcome change. The food was cheap (3 peso milanesas from Hugos sketchy street stand), the architecture was beautiful (even more impressive than Colonia to the south in my opinion) and a good place to see some of the stunning scenery in the north of Argentina (like Southwest USA on steroids). I spent the first few days wandering around the lively markets, ... read more
