The summer of 2021 is almost officially here. Yesterday my granddaughter graduated from high school. Big difference from when her brother graduated three years ago. Then entire families jammed into the field house at McDaniel College. This ceremony took place in an agricultural exhibit hall with only 4 tickets per family. Becky says it is called the cow palace. A big open cement floored building with giant fans slowly spinning and sprinkler heads that looked more like rain shower heads than commercial sprinklers. Giant signs announcing upcoming events instead of sports champion flags. Plastic wobbly chairs instead of bleachers. The weather held off until graduation was over and then the rains began. It wasn’t too bad at first, so we joined the throngs headed to the high school where photo op areas were set up. It ... read more

Of course, I am biased towards Berkeley. After all, I went there as both an undergrad, and for graduate school. Berkeley itself, has changed about 180 degrees since then. In 1964, the area around campus was almost "Ivy League" in appearance, with preppy men's stores, book stores, Fraser's (an upscale home and designer store), and the usual assortment of college related businesses. Today, it is a mess. Many of the locally owned stores are gone. It is a quagmire of retail, some bookstores, and total junk. The college atmosphere I enjoyed is long gone. The only attraction for me, around campus, are the many great restaurants, such as Chez Panisse, Great China, and Gather. I visited another of my alma maters, University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill just last year. I would say, at first ... read more

Susan and I thought Solomons, Maryland, would be a pleasant place for another circumscribed day trip. I had head of it, but not visited. Certainly easy to reach from home, only about 1 1/2 hours away via the Capital Beltway and Maryland 4. Solomons is at the tip of a peninsula where the Patuxent River flows into the Chesapeake Bay. Fishing, especially crabbing, had been the industry in Solomons for decades. Shipbuilders at Solomons developed the bugeye and skipjack sailing vessels specifically for fishing and crabbing. Today pleasure boating and sailing are the principal leisure activities. There is no beach immediately at Solomons but there are several marinas. At Solomons, Maryland 4 continues across the Patuxent River via the Thomas Johnson bridge. We took the branching Solomons Island Road into the town and and then on ... read more

Frederick County, Maryland, has three covered bridges. Located between Frederick and Thurmont, visiting them makes for a nice daytrip. Well, we'd actually seen one of the bridges in August. Now in the fall, we were back to see the other two. All three are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. All continue to carry vehicular traffic. North of Frederick, Maryland, along US Highway 15, the route to the covered bridges trail is marked at the exit for Old Frederick Road. The road leads to Utica Road, where the Utica Covered Bridge is found. The Utica Covered Bridge is thought to date to 1860. It was moved to this location, across Fishing Creek, in 1891 after it was washed out of its original location spanning ht Monocacy River. It is the longest of the three, ... read more

The Civil War Battle of Monocacy, 9 July 1864, took place just east of Frederick, Maryland. The battle focused on preventing Confederate forces from marching on Washington, DC. Confederates under Jubal Early and John Breckenridge invaded Maryland from Virginia at the beginning of July 1864. Union forces under Lew Wallace were dispatched from Baltimore to head them off. (After the war, Lew Wallace would author the novel Ben-Hur.) The two forces met at Frederick Junction, a strategic point where both the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and the Georgetown Pike (Rockville Pike) highway crossed the Monocacy River. Ultimately Union forces retreated, allowing the Confederates to move against Washington, DC. Nevertheless, the engagement delayed the Confederates and provided time for Union reinforcements to be deployed to Washington. The Confederates were ultimately stopped at the Battle of Fort... read more

Up and walking by 5:30, so we actually saw the sunrise this Tuesday morning at 5:41 am. Reds and then oranges burst into the clouds making for a colorful expression of nature. Having fun with the kids doing TikTok videos, check the one having fun in the pool. I decided to try one for myself - lol! What do you think! Spending the days by the pool, my tan is looking really Floridian. Too badI have to leave Florida to take the time to relax and spend sometime in the sun. Todd and I have been having a Sequence Challenge over the last 10 days, I finally caught up to him and am now ahead of him 17-16 games. Tonight we finish, wish me luck. Tomorrow is a travel day. Heading to MA to see ... read more

Awesome weekend at Hotel Edwards! The breakfast wraps here are unbelievably delicious. Todd is chief cook and bottle washer and come to think of it laundryman, gardener and all around great Dad. Dinners are also amazing, like the Cod and Veggies we had for dinner last night! I'm loving the morning walks, the air is cool and the mountains are a nice change from Florida! My days are spent with grandkids at the pool, making cookies, and sharing meals. The sunset walks are even more spectacular! Tonight's was especially beautiful! When I got back I found Renee out practicing here Lacrosse. She plays in tournaments all over the east coast. Hopefully one day she'll get a scholarship with her field skills!... read more

Family Fun is the best fun! Morning walks, wild life viewing, swimming in the pool, and walking through the gardens on the grounds are all spectacular ways to spend my days. The flowers in Michelle's Gardens are blooming beautifully. The highlight of Saturday night was the Edwards/Gouker 3rd Annual Ice Cream Off. Todd made Sea-salt Caramel and Cherry Garcia ice cream and Don made Caramel Crunch and Mint-Chocolate Ice cream Pie. The winner for the third year in a row was Don Gouker, with his Caramel Crunch. Todd's Cherry Garcia came in second. The sky was a glow this evening with PINK. The end to a perfect day.... read more

Climbing the ridge this morning on our walk, Todd and I saw the Albino Deer! He was just standing there posing for us in between the trees. What an amazing site! It's great spending time with the grandkids. Rachel worked most of the day at her job at CVS. She has been promoted to Shift Supervisor. This young lady just graduated from high school and she is heading to Duke University in August. Renee and I had some bonding time together today. She is the most fun for me and we are a lot alike! We bought the other kids M&M's and bought ourselves some Starbuck Frappuccinos and our own small containers of ice cream since Moore's Ice Cream Shoppe is still closed. It was a beautiful afternoon to spend in the pool, and most of ... read more

The girls are finally home for the next week! The boys are happy and so is Grammy! The boys and I drove down to Baker Park and walked through the park and along the Carroll Creek River. We saw loads of Canadian Geese and ducks along the river including four baby ducks being safe-guarded bother Mama. Frederick was founded in 1745 and is now 275 years old. There is a lot of Civil War History in the area. I am not in favor of tearing down all the monuments. I think we need to learn from the mistakes of the past and not pretend it never happened. Let's keep our history in tact and teach the mistakes we made to our school children so they can learn how to change the world to make it ... read more
