Written in 2012: Again, the only reason to go to Maryland is to have crab cakes on the Chesapeake, see an Orioles game at Camden Yards, or visit the great Naval Academy in Annapolis. To think I almost went to graduate school in old downtown Baltimore at Johns Hopkins! It was the seventh state to ratify the Constitution. Though it is a small state, it is the fifth most densely populated and the nineteenth most populous. Several government agencies are located here. Baltimore is the most populated city, and Annapolis is the capital. Maryland has an area of 12,407 square miles, or roughly the size of Belgium, without its great chocolates. Washington, DC sits on land that once belonged to Maryland. Chesapeake Bay nearly intersects the state down the middle. It is one of the few ... read more

On our Visit to Solomons, Maryland, in November 2020, we planned to make a return visit to see the Calvert Marine Museum. Wednesday was a beautiful sunny day with mild temperatures, just the right time to begin our 2022 adventures! And so Susan and I set out again for Solomons Maryland. We arrived around lunchtime. After a stroll along the riverfront and a duck into a local shop, we headed for the Island Hideaway restaurant. The entrance was somewhat what hidden, made more so by the road repair work going on. I thought seafood would be the order of the day. But, then I noted their St. Patrick's Day menu and I just had to order the Bangers and Colcannon! The Calvert Marine Museum is divided into three exhibition spaces: Estuarine Biology Gallery, Paleontology Gallery and ... read more

With road trips ramping up once again, we set out to visit Julia and Frank once again in Athens, Ohio. We hadn't been to see them since February 2020 just before the world fell apart. We planned to take a measured trip this time. No driving straight through from Northern Virginia to Athens (or Logan, rather). Instead we would break the outward trip with an overnight in Morgantown, West Virginia. At Hancock, Maryland, Interstate I-68 diverges from I-70. I-68 routes directly westbound, though Cumberland, Maryland, and on to Morgantown. It's called the National Freeway, after the old 19th Century National Road, which I-68 parallels between Hancock and Keysers Ridge. Not far west of Hancock is a dramatic roadcut through Sideling Hill. The cut was excavated in 1983-1985 and is 340 feet (104 m) deep with about ... read more

Our stop for lunch westward on I-68 was the Cracker Barrel at La Vale, Maryland, not far from Cumberland. After eating lunch and and a stop for fuel, I wanted to seek out the La Vale Toll Gate House nearby. It's a listed building here along US Highway 40. The La Vale Toll Gate House was built in 1835 on the National Road. In my blog entry of 5 January 2020 I described how the National Road, now US Highway 40, had been built west from Cumberland to the Ohio County and Illinois beginning in 1811. The road was transferred from federal to state control in 1835 and the states subsequently imposed tolls for usage. The polygonal La Vale Tollhouse is the only one still standing in Maryland. It probably was also a residence for the ... read more

Cumberland, Maryland For such a small town the houses were very grand so to the historic railway station. The ornate buildings, designed in the architectural styles of the time, including Italianate, Art Deco, Beau Arts, Romanesque, and Georgian Revival. We saw George Washington’s Headquarters, Constructed in 1755, the historic cabin was originally a part of Fort Cumberland. George Washington, lived there during the French and Indian War and the Whiskey Rebellion. The cabin was moved to its current location after the destruction of the fort. It is the only surviving building of Fort Cumberland. Another enjoyable trip discovering locations outside of New York with Aaron & Patrick https://www.heygo.com/aaronandpatrick... read more

For our first full day in Ocean City, we definitely wanted to hit the beach. We got up fairly early, packed up our beach stuff, and headed out. We ran across some traffic heading towards the island and on the island itself, but it honestly wasn't too bad. We did make the mistake of going to a Dunkin right after the bridge, and had to wait in a line for twenty minutes or so. It would have been much smarter to go through the drive through at the one in Berlin, so lesson learned. We stayed in the middle of the island and avoided the boardwalk end. We found the parking to be free in this area, and I'm sure the beaches were less crowded as well. We ran across the busy road carrying our beach ... read more

We all slept really well in the hotel, thanks in part to the cocktails! We got up, found a Dunkin', and headed to our final destination. The trip took way longer than we anitcipated. First, Theresa's tire was low on air and we had to stop at two gas stations to find an air machine that worked. Then, the traffic was really rough in places, particularly around Philadelphia. There were no easy rest stops, either. We had to pull of and enter a busy town every time we had to make a pit stop. The first place we stopped at was a store called Wawas, which I've never heard off. It was a pretty busy place, full of travelers looking for a bathroom. The second time we needed to stop, we were in Delaware. We were ... read more

Can not believe it has been 5 days since I wrote. HI is now just a marvelous memory. The looks on both my oldest daughter and granddaughter are burned beautifully in my memory. Our last morning was filled with laundry, packing and just hanging out together, staring at the Pacific from Jeanne's backyard and playing with the dog. Trip from Kona to LAX was uneventful, food was really good, having our own personal iPads made entertainment easy. Got to LAX 11:55 Pacific time, and went to a hotel within a mile of the airport to try and catch a few hours sleep. We were already beginning to feel the effects of flying west to east. Were only supposed to have about 4 hours sleep, but at about 2:30am we got a text that our plane was ... read more

Let the adventure really begin. Today was a red letter day. We had to drive about 90 miles to accomplish it, but we got our covid tests and are all negative. Thank you, universe. Had a lovely breakfast with Gerri’s friends before we headed home to laundry and packing. I took grandkids out for dinner and we had a blast talking about upcoming trip for Becky and new college semester courses for both. 6:30 am can checkin for flight to LAX and 11 am for flight to HI. Am much more relaxed and excited about trip now. Worrying about which test we would have to get and timing to get it was nerve-wracking. But type and timing verified today. Had results in less than three hours. We got to do it to ourselves and only had ... read more

Today is my grandson Andy's 21st birthday. I missed his birth because I was on reserve duty in Naples Italy at the time, but when I got home I spent 6 weeks with the family helping out. I am sorry I missed his birth, but I will always remember where I was on that day. He asked for alcohol as a birthday present, and since he probably never had a drink in his life, I thought that was kind of interesting. So he and his mom figured out some drinks he might like to try and they are going to present them one day at a time. No alcoholic blackout for this boy. Tomorrow I head to Allentown to spend 5 days with my brother. Of course that means I will have to hit the farmers' ... read more
