Tuesday, August 28, 2012 found me facing a relatively long day behind the wheel – MapQuest told me 245 miles and a little over 4 hours by using I-95 for about half the trip. Although the stretch of I-95 between Houlton ME and Howland ME is not marked as scenic in my atlas and is not as scenic as many, it is at least as scenic as some stretches so labeled and, regardless of the designation, is an enjoyable drive. The Troll Valley Campground in Farmington ME is a small campground about a mile from town and was sparsely populated even over Labor Day Weekend. The vehicles pulled out of the drive at 8AM. After a couple stops in Watertown we made the interstate by 9. We went to Albany then north on I87 to Glensfalls and angled into Vermont. We picked up our last resupply box our daughter had mailed to Killington, VT by 3PM. We decided to drive as far as we could before dark and made it to Farmington, ME. We have rigged our SUV as a camper so we can sleep in it and not pay for a room every night we are not on the trail. Driving was done by 9PM and we snuggled in for the night at the truck stop parking lot. Our plan is to leapfrog back towards VT where we came off the trail last week. Mapping in Maine So, I was dispatched by my company to rural Maine where I am supposed to be working on making maps for rural Georgia (makes alot of sense, eh?). It was a rollicking good time for sure. Since the town I was in (Wilton) was so small that it didn't have any hotel, etc, I was lodging with the guy who we contracted to make the maps. He had an awesome house and was very nice. My only complaint was that they were quasi-vegetarians, so the food was a bit scarce for me. Still, it was nice; although, I must say the best time was riding the bus from Lewiston to Portland.
