FINALLY, A BOAT RIDE We decided to spend two nights here at Atchafalaya Landing, at Henderson, Louisiana, seeing as there were two double beds for us all to use. We are enclosing a short clip of today's highlight. Our skipper and guide is the local Crocodile Dundee, aka Alligator Tucker. He is the proprietor of Atchafalaya Landing, the cabins, and the small pub on site, Turtle Bar, and what an extraordinary character he is. His airboat swamp tour was absolutely fantastic. He's been feeding some of the alligators in the Atchafalaya basin bayou for many years, and they all come swimming when he is in the area and calls to them, sometimes in French, and splashes the surface of the water. Raw chicken also entices them of course. All of his "friends" are named, and while ... read more

Turtles, birds, and alligators oh my! So one of our bucket list things has been to ride on an air boat and now we can check that off the list. The gals in the office here at the RV park hooked us up with a guide, Captain Jude at Mequet Swamp Tours, who actually is a relative, that took us on a tour of the swamp here in Henderson. Where we are staying is surrounded by the Atchafalaya Basin which is the nation's largest swamp wilderness. It is nearly 595,000 acres containing nationally significant expanses of bottomland hardwoods, swamplands, bayous, and back-water lakes not to mention home to 200 species of birds, many of which we saw. We also saw turtles and of course alligators! The air boat had a HUGE Chevy engine on it so ... read more

We finally left Dallas on Tuesday and drove to Shreveport, LA. It was only 200 miles but we thought there might be some things to see and do there. After arriving in the late afternoon and asking around we quickly found out that there really wasn't much there if we didn't want to gamble. We decided to just go eat some dinner and then head out in the morning for Breaux Bridge which is just East of Lafayette. Wednesday we arrived in Henderson, LA and set up camp in a really nice "mom and pop" RV park called Frenchmen's Wilderness Campground. We heard about when we were stopped at a visitor's center just outside of Alexandria and got to talking to a couple in an RV who were asking where we were heading. They had just ... read more

BREAUX BRIDGE: We spent almost three days in the Bayou, staying about 15 minutes outside of the tiny town of Breaux Bridge. Breaux bridge is like something straight out of the 50's or 60's. Tiny. Humble. Quiet. One stop light- and only a blinking red light at that. There are a few restaurants right in town: a pizza joint, the "famous" Cafe Des Amis serving Southern specialties, a coffee shop, a french restaurant that was closed on a tuesday afternoon, and a burger place that looked like a diner. We, of course, chose Cafe Des Amis. Cafe Des Amis was empty- it was 3 pm on tuesday- although I could see it getting busy. It was a historical restaurant, with writing on the walls and an old brick bar. The food was amazing, traditional southern louisiana ... read more

There are days when all the romance of roadtrips goes out the window. Lets say, when you fight with your computer to accept the free wifi WEP at your hotel for an hour yet it still never really gets on, so you finally wait in line to use theirs, and get the directions (very specific) from Google maps, so you won’t have the hassles of trying to find your way. Leaving an hour late, I think, no big deal, as, really I don’t have specific plans, so I stop off at Café des Amis in Breaux Bridge (I am headed back east, so its on the way), and have a great lunch… spicy broiled shrimp on a croissant (super flakey), with swiss cheese and lettuce. Super duper good. The place was homey and fun too. They ... read more

7 people, 2 from Korea (1 who spoke no English - how he ended up in a Louisiana swamp outside of Breaux Bridge is anyones guess), and 1 Cajun, took off in our swamp mobile at 3:30, pushing off the side of the banks of the Cypress Island/Lake Martin Swamp. The boat is a dinged up but still sturdy looking crawfish skiff, which, according to the Cajun, can glide along in very shallow water, even mucky mud, without worry. MY biggest worry, in the first 1 or 2 minutes, was that here we were, in the swamp, and everyone in the boat wanted to see a ton of 'grandpapa' alligators, the really big ones. For me, it seems much scarier to see them in the boat, where your escape options are a)throw in the elderly lady ... read more

The week of Labor Day 2007 Melanie Brumfield’s parents went on a Caribbean Cruise. Melanie and Poppy were not invited! Melanie’s two sisters stayed at home in Tennessee. Melanie said she could not stay with them because they would kill her! Sometimes we all exaggerate don’t we? After a short discussion Poppy and Melanie decided to go on their very own cruise on land. We packed and loaded our stuff into Poppy’s car, a 2006 Scion xB “box car” and headed for south Louisiana where Poppy spent some years working for a “Doodle Bugging” company looking for oil. That is slang for seismograph prospecting. We planned on seeing some friends from long ago, some not seen in thirty plus years and a few even longer than that. On our way to New Orleans we were over ... read more

After leaving the Bayous cabins this morning, we walked around downtown Breaux Bridge before heading off to Avery Island, the home of the Tabasco Sauce Factory. The sauce was pretty hot, the tour, not so much. We opted to pay the extra and go through the three hundred and forty acre Jungle Gardens which is part of the company property, and it was really worth it. The azaleas were blooming and it was pretty fantastic to see in its full gala. A short drive later, and we are in Baton Rouge. Checking into the Hilton turns out to be a lot harder than it should be. There is problem with valet parking and the street out front is a parking lot. The police are getting pissed off, and the hotel staff is not sure what to ... read more
