Well, it has been a couple of days since I wrote anything in here! In that period of time we have managed to cross several states...Kansas, Illinois, Indiana, and are now in Louisville, Kentucky. On our way out of La Junta, we visited Bent's Fort just outside the town. Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site features a reconstructed 1840’s adobe fur trading post on the mountain branch of the Santa Fe Trail where traders, trappers, travelers, and Plains Indian tribes came together in peaceful terms for trade. We stuck around and had an interesting two hour tour of the fort. The interesting part was that it was not a military fort but a private entrepreneur's place of business. At the time it was in its heyday (mid 1800s), it was 600 miles from the nearest town ... read more

We drove through mostly farmland again from Kansas City, MO to Lexington, KY. We crossed the mighty Mississippi River in St. Louis, MO where the evidence of the swollen river was all around. This is where we were to pick up I-64 from I-70 but we were surprised to find signs telling us it was closed. Karen called the Road Conditions number given her by AAA to get redirected. After a few minutes delay we were back on track toward the familiar I-64 - the road HOME! At 7:00 pm we arrived in Lexington but had to make one more stop at….WalMart. The last provisions stop. The unfortunate thing about a small space is there isn’t much storage room for food for 4 people, so we had to stop frequently for food stuffs. We finally pulled ... read more

Its late, I have been getting little sleep, working lousy shifts and by god I need a vacation... and its Angela's birthday, I have an excuse! Chicago here I come! Left Lexington at five-ish heading to Cincinnati in Angela's electric golf cart, I mean car... Had dinner at an excellent Chinese restaraunt, visited with her brother and sister, took a nap and then off to the bus stop. Megabus is our ride, $13 round trip for two, sure beats the heck out of driving or flying as least as far as the pocketbook goes. (If you have not heard of Mega-Bus it is a really cheap commuter bus with hubs in Chicago, LA, and some place out east...) So at 1:25 am on Sunday July 6th we are on board and squeezed into tight quarters praying ... read more

This is the second time that this has happened to us. The first time was last year in southern Indiana at a rest stop on I-65 and today at a rest stop along I-75 in northern Kentucky. Both times there was an urgent knock at the door. The only time George left the coach was the first time, so we can’t be certain it was the same. It starts with an urgent knock at the door. There is one man standing outside. He’s nice and friendly and has an air of urgency about him. We’ve heard the following lines: “Michigan, Michigan you‘ve got to see this. Come with me.” “Do you have a CB? Have you seen the news? The RV that was on the news is at the other end of the parking lot. Come ... read more

Bear with me this is the first log entry so I will take some time and write a little more than I might otherwise put in the first day's trip record. I am also learning to add photos so there are more than might be necessary for this first entry. I will work on using formatting later. Today was mostly about getting started and taking advantage of an opportuntiy to visit with family. BJ, our Miniature Schnauzer, was sure she was going to travel with us so she arranged herself in the front seat while I loaded everything. She will be staying at home this trip. We stopped for lunch in Chattanooga with Mom, Dad, Cathy and, Beth. The weather was great and traffic was easy except for a brief slurge of rush hour stuff in ... read more

We left our lovely campsite at around 10AM and headed to Louisville to go to the Louisville Slugger Factory and Museum. Thus began our journey to try and find a place to park the RV. We were told that there would be parking for the RV at the factory, but no such luck. I ended up dropping off Carrie and Sam to run in and ask where we might be able to park. They found a place down the block, the opposite way I was going. So after making a loop around all the one-way streets, I managed to get to the parking lot and Carrie talked them into letting us park across a few spots. Luckily, they were the worst spots in the lot and no one would want to park in the water and ... read more

Mammoth Cave Sun June 1 to Mon June 2 Mammoth Cave is deserving of its name. So far about 360 some miles of tunnels have been explored. We hiked along 4 miles of them for 4 hrs. There were many types of cave structure, from broad, smooth tunnels of dry cave, carved by slow-moving water, and now crusted with gypsum formations that look like blossoms, or snowballs, to deep sinuous canyons through which water once moved swiftly - underground versions of the slickrock canyons we will see out west. We also climbed steep mountains, & plunged into valleys on slick paths, holding onto handrails. We saw active, wet parts of the cave with spectacular flowstone formations. Animals we saw: blind cave crickets, little pippistrelle bats, and a cave spider. Very cool. This evening what impresses me ... read more

We did a drive through tour of Lexington City, passed Transylvania University on the way to the Bluegrass Airport War Museum, where Geoff took a personal guided tour, with a retired pilot. It was a very cold morning about 5c. Off to Pleasant Hill Shaker Museum, which is a complete Shaker township, we met the broom maker, the cooper, the shaker box maker and they all showed us their skills. Too bad I couldn't fit a broom in the suitcase..... I would of had one ! I did get a shaker box ! The workmanship of the shakers is down to perfection. A rocking chair would look great on the back deck at KB !! We were the last to leave at 5.30pm.... they kicked us out ! We travelled onto Louisville and the sun came ... read more

A beautiful southern style breakfast awaited us in the dinning room.....Yum ! It was a very warm morning, beautiful sunny day. We then went to the Shaker Museum, it is the living quarters and meeting room of the religious Shakers, built in the early 1800's. It is set up as it would of been when the Shakers were there. They left this settlement in the early 1900's. We spent a good morning there, and then wished Marilyn and Tom a safe trip home to Rockford. On our way to Lexington we had a couple of stops at Franklin (Amish area), Bowling Green and Hodgenville (Abraham Lincoln's birth place). By now the temperature had dropped and we had rain. Even in the rain the Kentucky countryside was beautiful.... read more

Our last day in Paducah today, Marilyn and I went to the American Quilters Society Museum. Geoff and Tom went to Bluegrass Downs a race track just out of town. We all met up for lunch at the rotunda in the centre of town. The quilt museum was spectacular, a pleasure to be there. We made our way south east, to Sth Union Kentucky, to stay at the Shaker House Tavern B&B. It looked like a great southern mansion with large white columns at the front, with shaker rocking chairs on the porch....... For the next hour after arriving I took photos of every detail ! We all needed a ladder to get into bed.... the beds were so high ! After settling in and having a history lesson we decided to drive into Bowling Green, ... read more
