Oct 18 Day 9 There was frost on the sail cover this morning. I think it’s time to get farther South. The weather was cool but pleasant today. Rick played the National Anthem on his harmonica as Wayne raised the Stars and Stripes as we entered Kentucky Lake. We had sunshine and a light north - northwest -northeast breeze all afternoon. Just enough wind to fly Rick’s gennaker and sail much of the 20 miles to Kenlake State Park and Marina. We decided to stay at a marina so we can plug in our little heater to stay warm for another night. We aren’t quite ready for the cold after our stay in Alabama. Today we stepped back in time and spent the morning touring the Amish farms and business's. We did a self guided tour with a mp3, it was very informative. We visited Drygood, hardware, fencing, quilt, garden & grocery business's. We purchased fruit and nuts, pumpkin bread, oat and raisin cookies, fabric and a deadblow hammer ! and a few other bits and pieces ! The fields are bare at the moment, the men and boys are working with their horse and ploughs sewing their fields. The ground is just starting to warm after the long cold winter. The Land between the Lakes (LBL) is a National Recreation Area. Their website is: www.lbl.org. The two lakes are Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley and both are manmade. At the south welcome station they have a lot of displays about the area before, during and after the formation of the lakes. We toured The Homeplace which is a working 19th century farm. They have people dressed in period clothing and doing the daily chores and activities that were appropriate for that time and season. During the year they will have special events and festivals to highlight the spirit of this era. The farm consists of 16 original and restored log structures that are from the surrounding area. I didn’t expect to see elk and bison on our trip, but there is an area where they roam. ... read more
