Oct 18 Day 9
There was frost on the sail cover this morning. I think it’s time to get farther South. The weather was cool but pleasant today. Rick played the National Anthem on his harmonica as Wayne raised the Stars and Stripes as we entered Kentucky Lake. We had sunshine and a light north - northwest -northeast breeze all afternoon. Just enough wind to fly Rick’s gennaker and sail much of the 20 miles to Kenlake State Park and Marina. We decided to stay at a marina so we can plug in our little heater to stay warm for another night. We aren’t quite ready for the cold after our stay in Alabama. We were provided a ride to the park lodge by a park ranger where we had a big turkey dinner with all the trimmings. All for only $12, and it’s not even Thanksgiving. Our first day on the lake was a good one.
Distance traveled: 20.2 miles.
Critter count - A Bald Eagle circled during the National Anthem. A very large Bumble Bee hitched a ride with us.
Question of the day: What is the names of the lakes on each side of
the Land Between the Lakes?

Oct 19 Day 10
We were up and at them early today. The wind was blowing so we were on the Lake sailing by 8:00 am. The only problem is that the wind is from the South and we are headed South. We made 12 tacks back and forth across the lake before anchoring for lunch behind an island. The lake is about a mile wide and a deep channel is marked for boat traffic. We spent most of the day outside the marked channel and didn’t go aground once. When the depth got less than 8 feet we just tacked. After lunch we motor sailed for a couple of hours and then finished the day of with a couple more hours beating into the wind. This is the part of the trip that we can use our sails. Later we will be on narrow cannels and rivers so won’t be able to sail much. We could probably make more distance if we just motored, but we are SAILORS. We reached Paris Landing State Park and Marina at 5:30 pm.
Distance traveled over water: 41 miles. Distance made good 21 Wayne at Turtle Bay
Ready to start the trip miles.
Critter count - Lots of white birds standing on a small island. We think they were pelicans.
Question of the day: What State is located south on Kentucky? I think we are there now.
Oct 20 Day 10
We departed at 8:15 this morning. The wind was SSW so we were able to make some long tacks. When the wind switched to the South at 10:30 we motor sailed for the rest of the day. By leaving the main up we can gain about 1 mph. The weather is still sunny and pleasant. We stopped at Pebble Ilse Marina at Johnsonville, TN for the night. They let us use their courtesy car to go to the grocery store for provisions. We were told that most of the counties south of this location are dry so we picked up some beer and brandy too. I hope that doesn’t make us bootleggers when we sail thru the dry counties. We plan on anchoring out for the next 3-4 nights so no more blogs for a few days.
Distance sailed over water 37 miles. Distance made good 30 miles.
Question of the Day: We are
Rick at the Helm
How is that sail set? sailing south. Are we going up the Tennessee River or down river?
