I got a mid-morning start as I departed the Pine Grove RV Park in Greenwood NE for a week-long stay at the Tuttle Creek Cove Campground in Manhattan KS. I had selected Manhattan for my base camp because of its centralized location, unlike my circumstantial midpoint landing in Nebraska the previous week. I returned to Lincoln NE from Greenwood to head south on US 77. Near Beatrice NE, I made a stop at the Homestead National Monument of America. This National Park Service attraction is actually two separate facilities. A coin flip found me first visiting the Homestead Education Center which is the more artifact laden of the two. The Farm Implement Room has an awesome collection of well documented vintage agricultural equipment. One room of the center has an interesting exhibition of photographs of one-room ... read more

09-06-15 and 09-07-15 Sunday is a day of rest and so it was for me. I needed a break from driving and so did Oscar so we stayed at the campground for an extra night. The hosts serve breakfast, for a fee, every day in the summer so I decided to take advantage and support the cause. It was sausage and pancakes, coffee and juice and turned out to be delicious. I put out the awning and strapped it down well and sat in the shade and read my book for the first time in 2 weeks. Didn't realize I had been that busy that there was no time to sit, too many fun things to do. The campground cleared out and was quiet, the birds were singing and Oscar was laying flat out, half in ... read more

No likey the mornings. Sally went down to get breakfast and I stayed in the room to watch the sunrise from the opposite of my normal day. So entranced that I forgot to take a picture of it coming up over the historic water tower in Salina. Circa 1999. Sweet view!... read more

No offense, seriously, but do kids grow up aspiring to move to Kansas. We are half way through the state and haven't seen a house (after Topeka) for 3 hours! I forgot how beautifully desolate central Kansas is. It does have nice rolling hills but a bit lacking in scenery. Not even a tumbleweed yet. ... read more

After logging 700 miles yesterday we headed out early this morning…almost in the wrong direction. Despite a blinding sunrise from, obviously, the east, I headed straight into it—until Marcia stopped me (on the entrance ramp to the highway) and pointed out I was headed home. Clearly underfed, she handed me the last donut from yesterday, insisted I guzzle some more coffee, and got me turned 180 degrees. Thank goodness she relies on maps, not gps, and a good sense of which way is which—as in, the sun rises in the east. (OK, I cannot help myself...she does not need no stinkin' GPS, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqomZQMZQCQ). We were back on MO36, a great road I highly recommend as it rolls through the driftless region from Hannibal and Cameron and covers some nice rolling terrain. (By the way, the NPR ... read more

It is an enormously beautiful cathedral. It may have been the longest mass we've been too. Paul looked at Elizabeth and said, " We may have to skip Denver because this mass is so long." It was nice though. I like taking them to different churches so they are comfortable someday going wherever they are if they want to go ... read more

Wow how time flies Here I am in Kansas City and wondering where the time went. It all seems to blend in. Anyway I hit Atlanta and the hotel I stayed in was walking distance from the hotel. In fact it is the same hotel Gaynor and I were booked into in 2003 and when we turned up then it was closed for renovation even though we had prepaid for it. So got to stay there this time and I set out to explore the city by foot even though it was 90+ in the shade. Went to the underground town(http://www.underground-atlanta.com/) for an explore. Not much different to my previous visit but still interesting that years ago they just built over the top of these streets as the city progressed and then discover later they have ... read more
