Okay, I won’t lie to you. This was the toughest day I have ever had on a bike! This was the day I realized riding the Trans Am is the most difficult undertaking I have ever participated in! I have done two Marathons, five Death Rides, and countless Century’s but none were more draining than today. My knees hurt, and my whole body is sore! I mentioned two days ago that it was all about the winds! Well today, Mother Nature was not kind to people riding West on a bicycle! I rode 73 miles into a Westerly wind blowing 15 knots, gusting to 23. I had to grip the handlebars with full force and concentration every time a truck passed just to keep from being blown off the road! The wind is relentless! It doesn’t ... read more

Today was far from boring! For some reason I tossed and turned all night and finally threw in the towel about 4am; had a quick corn flake breakfast and hit the road. I have good front and rear blinkers, so there was no danger of not being seen. Besides, I was the only one on the road, It was actually quite fun, peddling along in the dark. I rode right by a grazing deer, and only at the last minute did he see me and sprint off into the woods. I did get chased by two dogs who were defending their homes. Nobody is supposed to be out there that early! The sunrise was beautiful and I also got to watch a tremendous light show since I was riding right into a line of thunderstorms. Finally, ... read more

North America » United States » Kansas » Chanute June 23rd 2018

The topography here has changed dramatically. Kansas is wide open. So far it is nothing but huge farms and very gently rolling hills. I climbed only 1050 feet in 59 miles today. I can already tell Kansas is going to be all about the winds. The prevailing winds are southerly. Today, after a quick goodby to Bruce, I was out the door early and arrived at Chanute at 11:30, just before the winds really started blowing. I think there are going to be a lot of early days because the forcast seems to be mostly from the southwest in the afternoon. 12-15 knots of big crosswinds makes it a tough grind. The riders traveling east talk about the winds also. It really doesn’t seem either direction is any better. On another subject: Several have asked what ... read more

Today was the earliest departure yet,(0630) in an attempt to beat the headwinds! For the most part we were successful. We made it about 40 of the 50 miles before the wind really kicked up! The last city in Missouri, Golden City has a famous Diner among the cycling crowd called Cooky’s Diner. They made us a great breakfast and we signed their book to verify our visit. While we were there, two of the Trans America racers entered for a quick meal. Marc McConnel and Lech Kiedrowski, Mark was especially pleasant and gave me some great, “gotta visit”, tips. ( Although he is racing, he had time to enjoy some great adventures along the way.) The first of them occurs in Wyoming at Saratoga, so I have something to look forward to. After leaving Golden ... read more

I've decided to start a travel blog! A little about me...I live in Kansas. I love to travel, and Kansas being in the middle of the United States makes it a little easier on me financially. When I'm not traveling, I write for a living. I haven't written my great travel book yet, but I plan on it. I also planned to play in the NBA , so we'll see. I'll be back soon with something that resembles travel more and rambling less. Gabe... read more

Smoky Garden Fishing Lake Park, Goodland, KS Joan has a knack for finding campgrounds. I’m not sure how she does it exactly, but that’s her responsibility and she comes up with some, usually great, surprises. As we drove up Kansas 27 from Tribune towards Goodland, the landscape became pretty much what you think of in Kansas - flat, no trees, and covered with farms. As I scanned the horizon I didn’t see a single landmark except for an occasional patch of trees hiding a farmhouse and barn. As we followed Gladys (the LandCruiser’s GPS) I noticed that the dark blue line just sort of ended, changed to light blue, and took a sharp left turn. Sure enough, as we approached a dirt side road that looked more like a driveway to some distant farmhouse than a ... read more

Last night as we were sitting around we heard a gun shot echo around the RV Park. Well, it was actually Jeff's back tyre exploding off the rim. There was discussion as to if it was caused by a poor job of patching (done by Tom) or a poor job of fitting the tyre (done by Jeff). The important thing here was not who's fault it was, but that Jeff has leapt to second spot on the Puncture/Mechanical count and is looking to close in on Tom. We had to make an important decision this morning (well last night actually). I started to feel a bit of a calf strain yesterday which slowed me down a bit so we discussed having a day off for a rest. In the end the consensus was to sleep in ... read more

North America » United States » Kansas » El Dorado June 19th 2017

It's a beautiful morning, and the forecast is for about 30C (81F) although the humidity is expected to hit 98%. The sky is overcast which means we won't be riding in full sun for the first time on the trip. There is a slight wind and it's at our backs. What a cracker of a day for a ride. We've decided to do 30km stints in the morning which will get us through the town of Maize and then 14km stints in the afternoon which will get us to the town of El Dorado. We leave the pretty town of Pratt behind quickly and are soon out in the countryside once again. We're in farming country, lots of hay and corn being grown. The back road we travel on for most of the day has a ... read more
