It was with mixed emotions that we decided to go to the Sedgeway County Zoo. I am a little adverse to caged animals for a variety of reasons however I thought I should see for myself just how good or bad the conditions are that the wild animals are kept in. We kidnapped (borrowed) the granddaughter of our USA brother and sister in-law and took her to the zoo. Adults can't go to the zoo on their own, can they? It was good to see the animals through her fresh eyes. Where else could a five year old get the real time experience of smells, sights and sounds of animals not native to this country? Sammy was very keen on seeing the new elephant exhibit however it took awhile to get to where they were located ... read more

First, “Happy 2016” to all. I hope the year is productive and proves healthy for all my readers. A computer crash of sorts (does an operator error while learning a new operating system constitute a crash?) has led me to downsize the blogs describing the final five weeks of the 2015 Chapter of The Great Adventure. I want to let my regular readers know that all is well in Arizona so they are not contemplating, “I wonder whatever happened to Old Whatshisname.” A long story made short, I had the CPU cooling fan on my laptop go poo-poo kaka shortly before I arrived in Illinois in July 2015. That’s okay as my machine was as old, as slow and as feeble as its owner. I managed a workaround until I returned to Arizona where I shopped ... read more

Erin AGH! It's the day before we leave for the BIG TRIP!! I can't believe we have waited and anctipiated tomorrow for so long, and it is finally here!. We just finished our final goodbyes in KC with some good friends, and are now in Wichita tying up our lose ends. Jeff and I have laughed to ourselves, because we feel like we are just going on a regular ol' vacation. The reality has not set in of what we are really going to be doing when we board the plane at 6:25 in the morning. It is such a surreal feeling!! It is so hard to think that by tomorrow afternoon we will be in Leon. Nicaragua... and in 90 degree weather! Quite the opposite of the 28 degrees we are leaving in Wichita/KC. I ... read more

Just before we reached the Kansas border, we saw huge flames off of I-35 - a grass fire. It looked like the wind was pushing the fire away from local houses. I took a few pictures through the windows. We arrived in Wichita, Kansas at 10 PM Tuesday night. We drove 500 miles through 3 states. Today we head to Loveland, Colorado. We will be stopping in Salina, Kansas this morning to see the house Terry lived in for 2 years when he was 10 - 12 years old. His dad, who passed on May 13, was stationed at Shilling Airforce Base (closed). I left my AT&T network device at home and I have not been able to post while on the road. Until Tracy mails to Oregon, I will be doing this at the hotel. ... read more

This is a post of frustration. Don't get me wrong. I love what I'm doing. But I think it's okay to get frustrated and tired and maybe a little burnt out at times. I'll get out of this funk, but, for now, I'm in a funk. I think a big part of the problem is that over the past 2.5 years of medical school I have been just accumulating knowledge (actually it's been nearly 27 years of accumulation). Massive amounts of knowledge. However, in the current role I play as 3rd year medical student, there are very few outlets to release that knowledge. Tests are the most common, but I'm pretty sick and tired of them too. In my day to day activities, I have very few outlets. Consequently, it has just bottled up inside of ... read more

"Hi, my name is Brett and I'm a 3rd year medical student who will be seeing you during your stay. I'm a complete idiot and have no idea what I'm doing, what is wrong with you, or what we are doing to try and help you. I hope you're okay with me just being a glorified voyeur on your medical stay and learning from all the crappy things that happen to you. Could you tell me what brought you to the hospital today?" So, I obviously never said that, but I really should have in order to have full disclosure. The learning curve has been massive over these first 4 weeks. It's been a buffet of lessons in medicine, life, faith, society, ... To me the turning point occurred about 2 weeks in. It was at ... read more

This is probably the first of two posts, just to let you know. This one may be a bit more somber while the other one will probably be a collection of lessons. I finally got motivated to write today and I thought, you know, it really makes more sense to write monthly or bimonthly rather than daily or weekly because, honestly, everyday seems to be the same -- get up, go to the hospital, see patients, go home, go to sleep, repeat. It is only when I can step back and get the big picture that I realize what has just happened. So I've had this thought for some time now, but am finally putting it into writing. If you are in the hospital, you really don't want to be my friend. I think I'm a ... read more
