June 30 We had a leisurely breakfast this morning. David took the dogs to the dog park in the trailer park while I started breakfast. It was only a smigg cooler today and humidity was down too but still so sweltering that by the time David got back he was soaked with sweat. I wasn’t too sure we could make it in the heat touring the Eisenhower Library in Abeline today. The owners of the park were out by 8 am today mowing. We didn’t blame them but it wasn’t conducive to sleeping in on a Sunday morning. As we said the RV Park is sparse but very neat and clean. The owners lived in a 5th wheel near the front entrance and the dog park. The owners hovered over the place looking for the slightest ... read more

09-06-15 and 09-07-15 Sunday is a day of rest and so it was for me. I needed a break from driving and so did Oscar so we stayed at the campground for an extra night. The hosts serve breakfast, for a fee, every day in the summer so I decided to take advantage and support the cause. It was sausage and pancakes, coffee and juice and turned out to be delicious. I put out the awning and strapped it down well and sat in the shade and read my book for the first time in 2 weeks. Didn't realize I had been that busy that there was no time to sit, too many fun things to do. The campground cleared out and was quiet, the birds were singing and Oscar was laying flat out, half in ... read more

No offense, seriously, but do kids grow up aspiring to move to Kansas. We are half way through the state and haven't seen a house (after Topeka) for 3 hours! I forgot how beautifully desolate central Kansas is. It does have nice rolling hills but a bit lacking in scenery. Not even a tumbleweed yet. ... read more

The old line from South Pacific about "corny as Kansas in August" could obviously well apply in July. Or you could substitute soybeans for corn. For the 400 miles of driving today through northern Missouri and Kansas that is all we saw. If the world ever becomes critically dependent on corn, Kansas will be king. Our journey of the day was mostly just to get to the vicinity of Abilene so that we can visit the Eisenhower Library and Museum tomorrow, but we did break up the trip with a stop at an original Pony Express Home Station in Marysville KS. I am not sure that I can think of another enterprise that so captured the public imagination while becoming a short-lived business failure as the Pony Express. When California became a state, there was a ... read more

Saturday was the day GB & I head off west. It had rained over night and was still cloudy and cool. So we donned our wet weather trousers, farewelled our great hosts, Charlie and Vicky and headed out of Decatur and on through Springfield on Route 36. We refueled and had breaky at Hanibal and as we progressed west the clouds dissipated and the day warmed up. At Cameron we took a left turn onto Interstate 35 which took us into Kansas City. We had hoped to arrive around 2.00pm to meet Andy who was to join the journey west. However, we hit a major traffic jam going over the mighty Missouri River. They are building another bridge and traffic was down to one lane from three!!Took 30 mins to travel a couple of miles. We ... read more
