THE BASICS From Cody we drove to Thermopolis, where we soaked in the public hot tub pool. On to Lander, where we stayed again at the campground overlooking the town. But fierce winds our first night made the experience less than pleasant. We drove out to Sinks Canyon and took a mile plus nature walk. John worked in Casper 1969-1971, and wanted to revisit it. We drove all over the town, but the sun in the west was directly in our eyes and it was unsettling. Back to our RV we hurried, in a Walmart parking lot for the night. I have enjoyed western mysteries by Craig Johnson, and the model for the town in his books is Buffalo, WY, so we next went there for a couple of nights. John was feeling very sad that ... read more

This trip is drawing to a close. We left Terre Haute and simply planned on driving till we got home. We stopped for gas and bathroom breaks. Here are my thoughts as we came home today..... This trip is coming to a close. We rode nearly 9000 miles together in 3 weeks. We talked along the way of our experiences on this trip....what we loved, what we didn’t love, what was our favorite, what was our least favorite, and what we would do differently. We all agreed we loved this trip. It was an education. We’ve seen which state grow what crops and who has to irrigate. We’ve seen the terrain change from state to state. We’ve seen land that looked like it was good for nothing...particularly on the Indian Reservations (no wonder they hated us)! ... read more

Today was still another moving day. We put a lot of miles on, but we had good weather, so that was a plus. We left the hotel at 7:25 AM and 66 degrees and pointed the car east on I-90. We drove through four states today, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana. We drove beside Lake Michigan. We crossed the Mississippi River again today at the border of Minnesota and Wisconsin, where it flows into Lake Onalaska, and this will be the last time for a while. And we also crossed a couple of other rivers, the Wisconsin River, the Chicago River. We drove through more farm land, more corn fields, where the plants have begun to bloom and are leaving a yellow haze across the fields, and some very industrial areas, like Gary, IN. I have ... read more

We have stopped at a couple of pretty, small towns as we continue our adventure up the Ohio. Huntington on Saturday is the end of our journey and then we turn around and sail back to Cincinnati on Sunday. Unfortunately we are also making preparations for disembarking on Monday. Our journey is almost over! Along the river bank and bluffs are many large houses contrasted with trailer parks on lower ground. Some have their own jetties and it’s evident there is more leisure activities. On the other side of the river yesterday was Madison, so we were in Indiana not Kentucky. A very pretty town, most of which was moved to higher ground after the huge flood of 1937. Madison was so small we could walk around to few blocks dashing from shady tree to building ... read more

Day One Picked up the 2019 Ford Explorer from Enterprise around 7:30am, came home and packed it up with everything we decided we need for the two week trip. Heather and Diego came home around 8am with the turtle cake Martha had requested from Savoia Bakery, we did some final packing and loading, had an extended goodbye with Gracie and we were on our way. First leg of the trip had us scheduled to visit Barrio Taqueria in the Tremont section of Cleveland, but unfortunately this marked my first planning fail of the trip as we were greeted by locked doors and a sign that said Monday, open at 4pm. As we were there at 12:30pm and still had a 6 hour drive ahead of us to the hotel, we opted for alternate fare. Found an ... read more

We stayed the night at Lincoln State Park in Lincoln City, Indiana, close to the location where Abraham Lincoln lived from age 7 to age 20. We stayed in Gobblers Run Campground, which is a tent-only campground. It’s connected to another campground that allows RVs and motorhomes. Gobblers Run was very quiet. We ended up with a site near the restrooms, and there was no one else camped on our stretch of campground. We could relax and let the kids run and explore. Well, within limits. There was a lot of poison ivy on the edge of the forest behind the campsites, so they couldn’t go close to the forest! We were happy with the campground overall. Unfortunately, I accidentally deleted most of the photos I took of the campground area. We woke up early this ... read more

This is probably my last post for this trip, as we're heading to Knoxville, trying to beat Florence. We've had a wonderful time, even though we had to cut some major chunks out of our trip. We had plans to tent-camp from Whitehorse to Tuktoyaktuk (check Google), about 500 miles each way. After looking at the weather forecasts, we decided that driving 100 miles on mud and gravel and tent camping in 20-40 degree temps and rain would not be fun. Then, wildfires and smoke helped us decide that driving through British Columbia to the coasts of Washington and Oregon was probably not a good idea. I've included a picture of my planning and cancellation pages -- it got pretty complex. We hope to be home in the next few days!... read more

Since we’re now on the final leg of our trip, I can muse on the road part of this road trip. At one point, Tom said, “This would be a great trip except for the roads.” Sometimes they were good, sometimes terrible, sometimes they didn’t exist at all. Sometimes drivers were good, sometimes terrible, and – sometimes – we were all alone, which was lovely. We had plenty of time to talk as we drove, and grouped the challenges of this road trip into groups: · Road conditions: once you get off the US interstate highways, you’re on two-lane roads. The trans-Canada highway is not a limited access highway. Chip-and-tar surfaces are common, as is a type of dirt and gravel that dries into concrete in your wheelwells. Road construction is crammed into the few warm ... read more

We arrived in Chesterton yesterday, and our first stop was the National Park Service's visitor center. We stamped our National Parks passports and picked up Junior Ranger books for the kids. It was too late to swim at the beach, much to the disappointment of the kids. Still, we decided to scope it out. We headed to Lake View Beach, part of the national lake shore. It had free entry and parking. We apparently lucked out finding a spot, as we were later told parking is hard to come by there. We hiked the area a bit and enjoyed the views of the beach before heading to our bed & breakfast, Riley's Railhouse. We've stayed at this bed and breakfast before and loved it. It's an old freight station next to train tracks, and the whole ... read more

George Rogers Clark National Historical Park, Vincennes, Indiana The geographical focus for this trip is the Great Lakes Region. And, as part of that, I expected to learn more about how they were carved out by glaciers and how those glaciers were responsible for most of the geology of the area. Even expected to see some of the oldest rocks on the planet as the North American craton, the original core of the continent, created billions of years ago, is exposed in places nearby. I also expected to to learn about the French and fur traders who were the original explorers of the area. What I did not expect, though, was the political history we picked up yesterday at this bucket list item, and the reason for our stop here in southern Indiana. George Rogers Clark ... read more
