Since we haven't gone anywhere without our good old LER van in many years, and are now relying on others for transportation I have titled this blog NEOCOT (Not Exactly Our Cup Of Tea). Yes, I have made a reservation or three to start this trip. At least for the first two days. Then we will be back into our old groove of, "Where we gonna go next Marty?" One that has done us pretty well over the years as we traveled in all of the lower 48. How will we fare acting like real tourists for a change? Frankly, it scares me. I fear that just breezing into a local hotel, motel, B&B, or whatever, will possibly lead to our spending a night in a tiny rental car. By the way, we are going to ... read more

I write about Wai’ki’ki over a week after I left. Had such a cool time in Hawaii that I didn’t write. Then I got to Fiji, no electricity on the islands I was staying on. So from memory this is what I did. Day 2 Wai’ki’ki. Split the cost of car hire with Neil and Dean, a Londoner and Edinburghonian who I met at the Hawaiian Hostel. Travelled around the whole of the island, drove again for the first time in ages. Every few miles there would be a sign that said, “scenic view parking”, we’d pull in and ou and ah at the scenic view. Saw the famous north shore, huge waves. Ate more junk food for lunch. Went to an all you can eat buffet with Neil and Dean, Scotty and Cinthy (Australian couple), ... read more

I arrived in Honolulu airport with very little knowledge of Hawaii save Magnum PI in the 80's and I used to work for a company that choose an Hawaiian name for itself - Kokua Communications - the word Kokua in Hawiian means Help (more or less). The company went bust after about 18 months, after a long and drawn out funding process that from one day to the next changed from "We're funded" to "We're doomed". So long dot com. Arriving in Honolulu on Wai'ki'ki beach I instantly realised that this is a big tourism centre. I have never seen so many Japanese people congregated in one place before, and I lived in London. I'll one-day go to Japan so I expect that to change, but for now Honolulu holds the record. 90% of the rest ... read more

This past weekend a festival called “The Great Hawaiian Folk Life Festival” was held on Sat. and Sun. at the Kapiolani Park in Waikiki. Also held was a Parade through Waikiki, which I was not able to attend, to honor Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole, a popular Hawaiian Prince known as the People’s Prince, who instituted the Hawaiian Homestead Act which enables needy Native Hawaiian affordable housing up to this very day. A main beach in Waikiki is named after him, this past Monday was a State holiday to honor him, and a long highway known as the Kalanianaole Hwy. runs from East Honolulu, through Waimanalo and a large part of Kailua, bearing his name. The Festival ran in conjunction with a Arts and Craft Fair and featured popular Hawaiian Music Groups and a special Area ... read more

On the evening of March 31, a fire broke out in a Unit, 2 units away causing mostly smoke damage. So the past 3 weeks were spent cleaning, vacuuming, scrubbing, washing, etc. to remove the odor so I could finally move back in. After 3 weeks, I was able to accomplish pretty much was I could to make the place livable, and not a day too soon, as the 23rd Annual Hawaii Pacific University Intercultural Day was to take place, in downtown. Though I only discovered it during the past 5 years of it occurrence, it does give me something to look forward to. The students from the various countries set up booths mostly for informational purposes to give others the opportunity to learn and hopefully appreciate the richness of their culture. At about noon, ... read more

The Eastern Seacoast on the island of Oahu, is what probably most people elsewhere, may imagine what Hawaii looks like with it’s tropical greenness, slow unhurried lifestyle and miles of beaches and seacoast. As one exits the Likelike (pron. Likay Likay) Hwy. from the Wilson Tunnel, it may seem to him, like he just entered a Juraiassac Park. The first town one enters along this scenic coastline drive is Kaneohe (see a previous blog), a rather large low rise city with lots of commercial activity. After passing through this town, one comes across only small rural communities, with mostly Mom and Pop stores, and occasion souvenir or fruit stands. These communities are Ahuimanu, Kahaluu, Waikane, Waiahole, Kualoa, Kaawa, Kahana, Punaluu, Hauula, Laie and Kahuku. On the first 15 miles or halfway up to the coast ... read more

This past Sunday evening the streets of Waikiki looked more like the streets of Kyoto, Seoul, Naha or Hong Kong as the 28th Annual Pan-Pacific Parade took place. The event is a Japan sponsored function to promote friendship, culture exchange and fun between Japan and the Local cultures. The previous morning, there was another parade through Downtown and Waikiki honoring King Kamehameha (See Previous Journal). One would think it’ll be more sensible to have spread these events, let’s say at least a week or 2 apart, but hey, I just live here. Well, I’m not complaining as I love a parade anytime or anywhere. Basically various culture groups came from Japan specifically to participate in the event, such as traditional clowns, percussion bands, dancers, singers, etc. Usually at end, something new and interesting are featured. ... read more

The Answer Is: The Byrds of Paradise, Lost, Baywatch Hawaii and North Shore. Question: Name a few shows that were filmed at North Shore on Oahu? Which is incidentally the topic of this Blog, covering about a 30 mile length from the historic and colorful town of Haleiwa in the west to Turtle Bay Resort in Kuilima to the east. In between are mostly residential homes and agricultural industries in communities of Kawailoa, Sunset Beach, Waimea, Pupukea, Waialee and Kawela. Of course, the North Shore is instantly associated with monstrous waves, at least to the Locals here and the surfing community world-wide. However, on the day of my trip, the waves were rather small, so you won’t see much surfing photos today. Haleiwa, which literally means “House of Iwa” (named of a frigate bird), was ... read more

King Kamehameha Day was celebrated over the past weekend, with a Parade, crafts fair and entertainment in the park. Though a Highway that goes completely around the Island of Oahu is named after him, as well as a large prestigious school and a statue of him is erected in a prominent location downtown, I have to admit I know very little about him. We were really not taught much in schools in my days about his life, only that he united the Hawaiian Islands. Today however, I think Hawaiian history and subjects receive more exposure in schools. From what I’ve read on my own, he was the only one able to lift a huge boulder, called the Naha Stone, thus earning his position as a chief. As mentioned, he is highly honored for the unity of ... read more
