The Antitourist is a combination of two travelers who have been on their merry way for over 40 years. The older we get the more we seem to be heading out; sometimes not very far and sometimes farther than good sense dictates. It is the Ham part that got this hair-brained idea to be a Travel Blogger. Mostly because his name really fits his personality. The Antitourist is limited to almost 100% stateside travel since their travel van does not float or fly. Some of the tales herein are from the past since we started blogging so late.

Friday, July 06, 2007 We enjoyed the cool morning and didn’t get on our way until 11:00. It was a short drive to route 28 and then we headed east toward Ishpeming and Marquette. There were few places to eat along the way and those I spotted were many miles behind by the time they registered in my mind. I guess I wasn’t hungry. Nan Lou said she wasn’t hungry, and we motored on. After many miles we neared the outskirts of Ishpeming and Nan Lou admitted to being a little puckish, (Ham meant to say puckish----or perhaps not) maybe even downright starving, sometimes it is hard to tell. I had seen several Mickey signs and mentioned them only to receive an icy reply. After yesterday’s pasty, which tasted good but had less than desirous aftereffects, ... read more

Monday, July 02, 2007 We got up. We went to Sam’s. We went to a coffee place. I went to a museum. We left Minnesota. We found a National Forest Campground. We ate. Nan Lou beat me by one point. (This was Ham’s entry for today. He is very tired. I will now write the true log entry to the best of my ability.) We had to be up, dressed, and on our way before nine A.M. This is always a chore for us. Perhaps we can sleep in tomorrow. The thing is Ham noticed low tires last night. He dug out his little thing that inflates them and one was still down a little this morning. So, it was off to Sam’s to be first in line, if possible, to see what the trouble was. ... read more

Thursday, June 28, 2007 Last night was a red bag night; and, it felt good. The morning was cloudy but eventually the sun came out with those nice white clouds again. There were little bugs flying all around the LER. They looked like small mosquitoes, which they probably were. There was one bothering us last night as we were reading and we could never kill it, catch it, or put a jinx on it. They never seemed to bite me, and I don’t think any bit Nan Lou either. It was also warmer than yesterday; starting out in the high sixties and getting up to the mid seventies as the day progressed. We drove the ten miles into Ely and were very surprised to see it wasn’t one bit like we remembered it from fifteen years ... read more

Sunday, June 24, 2007 The night was uneventful, temperature right, neighbors quiet, not much campfire smoke, and we slept until about nine or ten. Then the sun warmed the LER as usual and we had to get up and on with our journey. Back on Wisconsin 35 we headed northwest along the river to the small town of Alma. Eagle Eye Louie spotted a little café advertising its coffee and ice cream. Since that sounded like a good healthy breakfast we stopped and walked a little ways back. It was very small, but we did see that they served a quiche along with buns and a few other things. The coffee was made espresso style in a big old shiny brass espresso maker. We had good strong coffee and the quiche that came with a fat ... read more

Well, here I go again. After several attempts at this travel blogging I will try a new way. The trip is over, but I will post several days at a time and see how it goes. I might stick in a photo now and then. Past attempts have been thwarted by not easily finding wifi hot spots. I do not want to do my traveling according to the location of such places. By the way, this is from our personal log and might contain weird things, but if we weren't weird people, we wouldn't be doing this. If anything is too inflammatory, it is George's fault. Here goes!!!!! It is June 17, 2007 and we haven’t left yet. Maybe we will get away tomorrow. It is hot in the Midwest, like 90 to 95, and will ... read more

It's been awhile since I turned in a report on our travels.  I have to go back to June tenth, or there abouts, to finish this off.  We were in a very nice cottage on the North Shore of Oahu when I had a very painful gut attack.  We dashed off to the local clinic and I was temporarily fixed up but had to hit a hospital in Honolulu the next day.  They liked me so much they kept me for four days before telling me that it would be wise for me to go home for additional tests.  A friend of our daughter, he lives in Honolulu, made the arrangements to change our tickets and we came home eight days early.  Our 40th anniversary was spent in the hospital in Honolulu.  How many people can say ... read more

We slept in until it was after noon.  Waking, dozing, relaxing, then napping again!  This is no later than many normal days at home.  The thing is, when we rolled out of bed it was only 8 AM Hawaii time.  We even got down to the hotel restaurant for a decent breakfast.  Pretty unusual for us to get breakfast during the normal hours.   We took a short walk around the hotel.  There wasn’t much to see since the street ran under a multilane freeway type road.  Then off we went to catch the city bus to the Waikiki area.  The bus driver was a woman and very nice.  She only charged us a dollar each since we are so old.   The bus ride took an hour or so to get to the end of ... read more

Well, our ride to the airport vanished in a cloud of dust when some cop thing took our limo with the wire screen and the chauffer away at the last minute.  Elen, his wife, offered to take us in her pickup.  I declined because I would have had to share the pickup bed with the luggage and their German Shepard who has big teeth.  We ended up taking our car to the airport long term parking. Ugh.    The shuttle bus took us to a point about 30 feet from the curbside check.  We were quickly checked in at the side of the curb. Then we went to the counter to have our bad window seat changed to a nice aisle seat way up front in row 12.  The girl who had the window seat there ... read more

Well we finally got it all together.  Even arranged a ride to the airport from Karl who lives downstairs.  He’s off today and has his cruiser for personal use.  His wife Elen has a new pickup and offered to drive us in that.  We preferred to ride in his cop car with the wire mesh and no inside door handles over the bed of the pickup.  I sure hope he doesn’t insist on cuffing us like most of his backseat passengers.  Gotta go. ... read more

One day left to get all the last minute things done.   Why are there last minute things?  We should have done them yesterday.  But, you know the old saying, "Never do today that which can be put off until tomorrow."... read more
