Once we started to board the plane in Manila, Penny knew exactly where she was going. She also knew we had one more flight after this one landed. The destination for PR100 was Honolulu, which told Penny that she was on her way to Maui. After all the posibilities given to her, she was finally going to the destination she thought she would get at the beginning of the trip. When we left Vancouver, she thought we were going west, when in fact we headed east. So, after 10 glorious hours in the air we arrived early Saturday morning in Honolulu. We collected our things, went to domestic, and then caught the short flight to Maui. Once in Maui, we had a car waiting for us and we were off to Kaanapali to stay the week ... read more

Aloha! Sunday 30th September – Maui (Haleakala National Park) We got up (much better nights sleep tonight, I shut the window so I couldn’t hear the traffic) were going to take the free hostel tour to Big Beach and Little Beach, I really wanted to go as had heard it was a must see (beautiful and for the fire shows in the evening). But in the end we decided not to and decided to move from the hostel into a hotel…so it was a busy morning of sorting. We booked into the Royal Lahaina (just outside of Lahaina) and checked out of the hostel; they wouldn’t give us a refund but that’s understandable. We packed up the car and headed for the Haleakala National Park, a dormant volcano. I hadn’t originally planned to go because I’d ... read more

26 September 2012 Wednesday. The cruise ship arrived off Lahaina, Maui by 7 am. After breakfast we caught the first tender to the port, and the shuttle to the rental car company. I really wanted to go to the top of the Haleakawa volcano, a National Park, but Mike, Betty, and Linda didn’t think we would have enough time to drive there and back (about 6 hours) before the ship set sail. So I reluctantly gave in. The rental car agent recommended we drive the 90 minutes to Twin Falls on the north side of the island on the Hana road. We got there and found the jungle trail to be very muddy. The girls decided to wait at the car while Mike and I hiked to the falls. In addition to the mud, we also ... read more

I've been incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to spend so much time with the whales. In the midst of the research with the competitive groups, you're so engrossed in identifying, photographing, and data recording that you're oblivious to the awe of the scene until you hear the oohing and awing from the whale watching boats that have to keep back 100yards. After we had a the bulk of the season under our belts and the intensity of the groups started to slow, us interns started getting opportunities to photograph the whales underwater. One my first time, we were instructed to step quietly into the water and swim out about 20 yards to intercept a competitive group of 9 whales. You could make out the faint white shapes of pectoral fins approaching in the distance. We ... read more

After a long 20 hours of travelling we arrived at our Hotel in Maui the Plantation Inn. We Sunday afternoon and arrived Sunday afternoon due to crossing the dateline. After checking out our lovely rooms in the we walked the short distance to the front street of Lahaina which dates back to the 1820s. The street runs along the waterfront and is filled with lovely historic buildings housing restaurants and shops. We found a restaurant overlooking the water to have our dinner and enjoyed watching the sunset over Lanai. After dinner we bought some ice creams and sat in the Banyan Tree Square which features an exceptionally large banyan tree, planted on April 24, 1873 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the arrival of Christian missionaies. Lahaina was once an important destination for the 19th century ... read more

Maui is an incredibly diverse island - biologically, culturally, and geographically. Being cut off from the mainland, there are loads of species endemic to Hawaii. Located in the middle of the Pacific, Hawaii seems to be equal parts polynesian, chinese, australian, and mexican. There are also a huge amount of tourists and surfers from the mainland US. I spent the first two weeks here looking for an appartment or room-share. I can't believe how difficult it was! Between checking online everyday, the local papers, and asking everyone I met, the cheapest I found was a closet converted to a bedroom with share kitchen and bathroom for twice as much as a normal appartment anywhere else. But I am about two blocks from the beach and our research headquarters. Some friends and I woke up dark and ... read more

Whilst exploring the island of Maui we stumbled upon the tourist hot spot of Lahaina. Lahaina attracts tourists with it's large banyan tree, market shopping and the lighthouse. It also has quite few funky and trendy shops plus a number of restaurants. We discovered Bubba Gump restaurant chain based on the movie Forrest Gump. The place takes kitch to a whole new level, table tennis bat menus, signs to tell the waiters to come or go, glasses you can take home (we got one each, so cool) and a happy birthday that steers very clear of the traditional version. The seafood is fantastic but unexpected in such a place, you are however staring at water, unless another couple blocks you. We ate "Dumb Luck Coconut Shrimp" - Bubba always loved this one! Driving our massive jeep along a small windy road I was a bit apprehensive about where we were going. I had looked at the website for this restaurant but looks can be deceiving. We were greeted by lovely valet drivers (they usually are in the USA) and they took our jeep away so fast I missed it, efficiency is all I can say. We strolled into the restaurant as we were early. The maitre dee greeted us warmly and suggested we could be seated early. Yes! We were so hungry! We were seated inside but we had the most spectacular view, the sun was still shining and as we looked throughout our meal the sun set with all the colors of the rainbow, yellows, oranges, pinks and purples. The sea changed with the changing colors of ... read more

Well it seems that some people are reading my blogs so here's an update. Loads of rain in LA which followed me to Honolulu! Spent 2 days on the fabulous Waikiki beach then flew to Maui. Taxi took me to hostel where I was booked for 7 nights. Could have cried when I saw it - it was unspeakably bad and in a very grotty area. The driver took pity on me and after many phone calls - because it is holiday season - he found me a place in Lahaina on other side of island. I was still worried but taxi driver had done a good job (he was a very good friend by this time). I was so relieved when we arrived! The resort, hotel and room are delightful and the sun came out ... read more

Formed by 2 huge volcanoes, Maui is Hawaii's second largest Island. It only lies about 80 miles west of Oahu so with the Sapphire Princess saying goodbye to Honolulu, she dropped anchor off the coast of Maui (Lahaina) in the early hours of Tuesday morning (28th September 2010). Until now, the main benefit of the cabin being right at the bow of the ship is that there is no noise from late night revellers (although Chris and Roisin weren't expecting the 'piss heads' express on this cruise!!) and no vibration or whirling from the engine room or propeller shafts. Now for everyone not familiar with the lay out of a ship, the anchor locker is usually at the front in the bow. ‘Dropping' anchor' means pressing a button or pulling a lever and letting 80 ton ... read more
