Today was a bit of a slow one.... Took a leisurely drive back to Peterson's Harley Davidson shop which was about an hours ride away from Key Largo. We enjoyed the ride and reluctantly handed back the keys and said a sad goodbye to the Road Glide - till next time. It was lunch time by the time we were finished at the dealership - next up we had some last minute cruise shopping which needed to be completed today. Both of us had to find good shoes to wear on the formal nights. We had previously purchased our fancy clothing for the formal nights back in Fort Lauderdale but haven't had time to search for shoes. Well it's never easy when you have so much choice. The shopping took a little longer than we intended ... read more

Well today was a special day - picking up our Harley Davidson rental from Peterson's South Harley Deslership. This is a big store but not nearly as great as we expected. Have to say Our dealership in Brisbane Australia still wins hands down when it comes to customer service. For the next two days we will ride around on a 2015 road glide special. Cost was $404 for the bike hire which includes full insurance ( mad if you don't take it). The bike is super with all the bells and whistles - such a great way to discover the Keys. Geoff handled the bike like a pro and the pillion seat was real comfy for me! Geoff was also talking to one of the sales guys about the new Ultra Limited Low. He said they ... read more

Our planned ride to Key West went ahead although early morning weather didn't look so promising. The ride out to Key West was a rather cold one - skies were overcast and we just kept hoping that the rain would stay away. Despite being cold the ride was amazing. It's a bucket list trip and it didn't let us down. Driving through so many keys with so many bridges with never ending views of ocean was simply gorgeous. We crossed The Seven Mile Bridge which is a famous bridge in the Florida Keys. It connects Knight's Key (part of the city of Marathon, Florida) in the Middle Keys to Little Duck Key in the Lower Keys. Seven Mile Bridge was among the longest bridges in the world when it was built and it is one of ... read more

Today we move from our "home Sweet Home" down to Key Largo. It's been a great stay here in Hollywood and I wouldnt hesitate to recommend this place to anyone - price, location, safety, comfort - it has it all. Packed and left by 9am. We headed down to Miami but this time we took the US1 instead of the freeway. A much better way to drive down. It may have traffic lights but it doesn't have the traffic jams of the freeway. We made it downtown Miami much quicker travelling this route. Headed to Little Havana which is a neighbourhood of Miami. Home to many Cuban immigrant residents, as well as many residents from Central and South America. Little Havana is named after Havana, Which is the capital and largest city in Cuba. We watched ... read more

There we sat at the edge of Marathon Key in a parking area at the beginning of the Seven Mile Bridge. The rain that had been accompanying us for the whole drive had finally broken and, while the dark clouds were still threatening, we were determined to complete the last part of the drive with the top down. The only problem was it was the first time we had ever rented a convertible and we had no idea how to get it to go down! We had done the obvious things like releasing the latch and pushing the button that had an image of the car with the top opening on it, but all we got was a warning that the top was not secure and a beep. As any modern, tech savvy person would do, ... read more

Saturday 15thNovember 2014 Marathon and Key West The houseboat isn’t on a jetty jutting out into the ocean. It is well-protected on a jetty in a little creek which flows into the ocean. Lovely setting, very picturesque, great sunsets; shame the boat is dirty! This accommodation has cost twice as much as the cabin in Key Largo and isn´t good value for money. Oh well, can´t win ‘em all! If it was cleaned up, shown some bleach and bathroom cleaner, it would be simply charming “shabby chic”. The “chic” is somewhat missing! However, despite this, we have enjoyed two great days in both Marathon and Key West. Marathon is joined to the lower Keys by the famous “Seven Mile Bridge”. This bridge is quite spectacular. Not only is it seven miles in length but it enjoys ... read more

Thursday 13thNovember 2014 Key Largo We have spent an idyllic time so far in the Florida Keys. We have avoided being eaten by alligators, but the mosquitos got us, especially Viv who has a grand selection of bites, despite spraying up regularly with mossie spray; just like being at home in Spain in the summer! We love Key Largo (but we haven´t met Humphrey Bogart’s ghost yet). The Spanish first named this island; “cayo largo” means “long key” in Spanish, because this is the longest of the keys. It is 30 miles long. On Tuesday we drove south, down the key, across several bridges, which link all of the keys together, to Islamorada, Layton and then on to Marathon in the Central Keys. We saw dozens of sea ospreys circling above, hunting for fish; ... read more

After a good nights sleep, woke to the sound of the old trolley cars full of early bird tourists on the street outside. Went to the pool deck for breakfast of muffins and coffee, it was a lovely warm sunny day. Our last day with the mustang so decided to make good use of her and go for spin back up highway one for a while. Checked out the beach areas first and found a spot to return to later in the day. Drove up as far as Big Pine key and popped into the wildlife centre. The area is famous for key deer which are an endangered species and many are killed on the highway each year. Got some good tips for where to see some wildlife and headed off the main highway. First stop ... read more

After a quick shower and a cup of tea we checked out of the hotel, thankfully a sunnier day with good weather scheduled for our drive south. Couldn't resist a final stop at the Mall as we had missed the Converse and Ralph Lauren stores yesterday. Alex did some damage in the Polo store and I couldn't choose between three pairs of Converse so bought them all! Alex wandered around Gap and I sneaked into Nine West and came out with a pair of boots. Just about done with shopping (as if). We hit the road for the four hour drive down the Keys. The weather was beautiful and the views stunning. Alex took a turn at driving and we drove into the sunset. As we approached Key West, I took over at the wheel, we ... read more

Bara en halvtimme kvar nu till kampingen i key West. Otroligt fint här och varmt. Sjukt varmt. Och fuktigt. Såg på kartan att keys är lika långt söderut som bahamas och Kuba. Gotta love it! 12 dagar kvar innan man landar i Umeå igen. Men känns ... read more
