Today we drove about 20miles south to St Augustine, the oldest town in the USA. It was originally a Spanish military settlement, until Spain swapped Florida for Cuba with the British (and then France gave them Louisiana as a consolation prize). First stop we visited the old town fort, Castillo de San Marcos, built in 1672. It was really interesting, although there was a fair amount of 'look at these pictures of the brave Spanish defending the fort against the evil British'. We then walked into the centre of town and bought ice creams (I had birthday cake flavour - om nom nom) and stamps for our postcards, before we couldn't bear the heat any more and retreated to the a/c in our car. We had another early rise and left Orlando at 8am to get to Ichetucknee Springs and meet the daughter of our next host, Genevieve, and some of her friends. The Fletcher Family are friends of Russell Bryant and frequently have his pathfinders to stay. Lyman went to Florida State University with Russell and is now a lawyer, married to Joanna and with two children. They live in Atlantic Beach, 2 blocks from the Atlantic Ocean and a lovely beach, just 30 minutes out of Jacksonville. At the river you park the car at the bottom and get a shuttle bus up to the source, where you hop on rubber rings and float all the way back down (it takes about 2hrs).
