Tomb of the Unkown Soldier
Changing of the Guard is an amazing ceremony to catch! Ann here -- it's not as fun blogging after the fact, but the last three days of the trip were too hectic to try to keep up with the blogging. In the interest of getting all of our notes down, I'm adding them now so we can read this later to refresh our memories. It certainly isn't as much fun blogging now that we're back home and I must return back to work tomorrow... bummer for sure... although, we all had a PHENOMENIAL time on our vacation, we were ready to get home and back into our routine.
We checked out of the hotel on Thursday, July 12th... one day earlier than we had expected as Anne and Bill insisted we stay the night with them. As it turned out, that was an AWESOME idea! We got to spend more time visiting with Anne & her family.
Katherine and I started the day by jumping on the Metro at 7:30am to hit the White House gift shop. The weather today was absolutely beautiful! Beautiful blue skies with a breeze -- mid-80s. We hit the gift shop, then back to the hotel to wake the boys and check out.
Iwo Jima Memorial
A great tribute to Marines! We started the morning at the Iwo Jima Memorial... a definite must see. A very nice tribute to the Marines! From there we went to Arlington National Cemetery. Also a definite must see! There is so much history there. I'm really glad we ended up paying to go on the TourMobile to go through the park (rather than walk it). The TourMobile stopped at the Kennedy burial site, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the Arlington house. All the way through, the tour guide gave a tremendous amount of info/history. We spent hours there and enjoyed it immensely! While there, we also toured the Arlington House (home of Robert E Lee and his family). The docent gave a great tour with an amazing amount of history.
From the Arlington Cemetery, we headed for Georgetown. We wanted to at least say we had been to Georgetown, so we headed for M Street... it's the main street through Georgetown... lots of shopping and pubs. We had lunch at a neat Pub... Old Glory All American Barbecue... delicious lunch! From there we went to the mall... we were shocked by how many great stores they had... Katherine "had to" do
some shopping in H&M.
From Georgetown, we headed to Anne & Bill's. The last time Anne and I had seen each other was at Rich's and my wedding in 1989. She (obviously) had never met Katherine and David and I had never met her kids... so much time has passed.... it's amazing! Mary's parents (John & Gloria) came over for dinner. It was GREAT to see them! The last time I had seen them was in 1987... they had never met Rich or our kids before... of the DC leg of the trip, this was a definite high point! I could've spent another week visiting with all of them!
We still need to blog our last two days there... not sure I get that in before I fall asleep. 😊
