Highlights from this week. Make sure to scroll to the bottom to see all the pictures. Sunday: Went Hiking with Copper at Hidden Mesa Open space. It was a nice 4.2 mile loop trail. At first we seemed to be hiking into a thunderstorm but the thunderstorm continued to move west faster than we were hiking. It was clear blue skies to the east and dark thunderous sky to the west. Very odd. Monday: I went to a meetup at a game store nearby. Met some new folks and learned 3 new games and I liked them all :) Definitely a good group of people and similar board gaming style. Wednesday: I went to a poly book club discussion. We met at "The Center" which is an LGBT resource building. They seem to have all kinds ... read more

Cañon City CO has two claims to fame: it is host to the Most Maximum Security Prison in the US, current residence of the Unabomber, El Chapo Guzman, The Shoebomber, the Boston Marathon bomber, the Oklahoma City bomber, and a bunch of CIA and FBI officials who passed secret info to the Soviets, resulting in the deaths of many US operatives. While I only saw one facility, there are actually 13 prisons in and around town. Probably the safest place in the country to spend the night. The county also boasts the Royal Gorge of the Arkansas river, crossed by a sky bridge. It looked like fun, if a little touristy, but I felt like I had to cover some miles and left it for next time. The road to the Continental Divide follows the valley ... read more

Since many folks have asked where my travel blog is- assuming I'll have one. Or asking if I'll have one I am going to try to keep a weekly blog of my nomad journeys. No guarantees as this has never worked for me in the past. Highlights from this week: Saturday: I left Phoenix! I drove to Albuquerque and got caught in one of the worst slow downs I've seen on a highway- took over 2 hours to go 3.5 miles. Almost anyone could literally walk faster. I got into Albuquerque way later than expected but stayed in a master suite bedroom with it's own entrance off of someone's house on airbnb for the night. Copper did well in the car though he did wonder why we were driving for almost 11 hours (should have been ... read more

Great Bend KS is named after the curve in a river which now runs dry. Route 50, and the Santa Fe trail, follow the course of the Arkansas River back to the Rockies, in search of the water now made scarce by the drought, and by the many impoundments along the way. The town grew up as a stop on the Santa Fe trail because of the water, the vista, and the buffalo. It was half way from Independence to Santa Fe, and it was comparatively safe from attack. I spent the early morning visiting Pawnee Rock and thinking about buffalo, Indians, wagon trains and water. I had been aware of the mythology, but this real place, with its view across the plains in all directions, seemed to bring it all together. The fracking of the ... read more

Today was going to be a big day. We were driving from Kanab, Utah to Avon, Colorado. It was a 9 hour drive but we had several stops we wanted to make. Plus we are older…. We have to get out of the car and stretch our legs, give our backs a break , and go potty!! I just can’t get over how beautiful the scenery is in this country!! Landforms change around nearly bend. First stop Glen’s Canyon bridge and reservoir. The water level was low and the bridge reminded us of a small New River Gorge Bridge. Certainly glad we stopped. Next stop was the Navajo visitor Center at Monument Valley. They had some of the cleanest public restrooms we’ve seen on this trip. I loved the way their picnic tables were decorated. The ... read more

Eastbound from Salida, Colorado there is a very nice drive down the Arkansas River. There are a bounch of good pulloffs (on the North side of the highway) that are good free day use areas. East of Coaldale there are some one lane construction sites for adding guardrails, widening the road, and for adding fresh asphalt. Somewhere around the Town of Texas Creek there are many river rafter vendors that have services open to the public. That would be an enjoyable experience riding down the lazy Arkansas River, in a dramatic canyon. There were independant river rafters doing their own rafting also. The BLM (Bureau of Land Management) has a number of good pay day use areas suitable for launching rafts. The BLM has a number of very good pay river camping areas...with a paid entry ... read more

I just got my truck back after some expensive repairs in Gunnison, and I wanted to test out my wheels and gears. I drove East about twenty miles to the small town of Parlin, Colorado. I turned North on Gunnison County road 76. After a few miles I drove through the little town of Ohio City. I drove past the Fish Hatchery on to the larger town of Pitkin. I checked out a few old buildings and the 1900 Pitcan City Hall. There I walked up the stairs to peek inside the city hall. They had a large room that looked like it could accomodate a large bunch of people. Pitkin was founded in 1879 and may be the first mining camp West of the Continental Divide. Pitkin (originally named Quartzville) was a gold and silver ... read more

Andrew's parents met us in Montrose this morning to drop off the kids, and they continued on to their home in Montana. We planned a night here so the kids could get a break from long trips on the road. Montrose isn't the nicest town, from what I can see. We're staying at the KOA here, which is very nice, but it's in the middle of a fairly sketchy area. We drove by some empty lots and storage units before our final turn. Usually when we stay at KOAs, we're just outside of town. So, being in town was a bit of a surprise! We're still enjoying our stay, though. Our lodging is spacious, comfortable, and clean. We've spent our time swimming and checking out Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. It's very hot and ... read more

The kids are with their grandparents in Durango, and Andrew and I are staying in Ridgway for his best friend's wedding. The wedding party and some of the guests are camping at the wedding site all weekend. Andrew and I enjoy camping, but we worried there would be a lot of drinking and such going on all weekend. Andrew's sober, so we decided to stay at a hotel instead. It will allow us to have some couple time, which is a rare thing these days, while also avoiding the party scene. Many wedding guests are staying at VRBOs in the area or staying at the Ouray KOA. When we talked to Drew last year about the wedding, he mentioned one hotel in the area. It's a solar spa called Chipeta, and I booked a room. It's ... read more

June 21 thru June 25 Ft Collins I stayed in a rv park that was a kid resort. They had swimming pools, splash pads, miniature golf, huge playground, bouncy castle, bumper boats and several different styles of bikes to rent. My niece Jess brought her 2 kids, Abby almost 3 and Shea almost 1 to play and the kids had a ball in the pool. We had hikes, and lots of play time over the couple of days that I was there including a softball game that their dad Rob and uncle Joey played in. Fun to see Abby so excited about her loved ones playing on the field. She cheered, jumped up and down and gave her dad a thumbs up for a great catch. I was a little overwhelmed with all the activity and ... read more
