Road Trip to Vail - Floridian Style!
Published: November 8th 2011North America » United States » Colorado » VailWell, my plan was to update you a few times during our drive across the country, but after waking up super early every day and sitting behind the wheel for 10-12 hours at a time, sitting down and opening the laptop was the last thing on my mind! So here I’ll go through the highlight reel of our 2,200 mile jaunt and share some photos that we took along the way. We left before sun-up on Wednesday morning, waving goodbye to the parents and in-laws after collecting our very confused canine. Our cars were crammed with every bit of winter gear we possessed, along with whatever kitchen, bathroom, and other miscellaneous gear we could stuff in there. We headed out of Palm Beach and stopped for lunch in Ocala, about four hours north. There we met ... read more
Vail was picturesque! The snow capped mountains, the towering trees, and the atmosphere of the ski village was breathtaking. It was a weekend of amazing powder on the slopes, along with rest and relaxation. The perfect combination for a great vacation. We arrived in Denver on Thursday night after a small flight delay and a few hiccups with our rental car. All in all it ended positive as we drove out in a fully loaded red mustang. It was a sweet ride and one Kyle couldn't pass up. Waking up the next morning we headed out on the road to downtown Denver. Denver: Denver is nicknamed "mile high city" sitting exactly a mile or 5,280 feet above sea level. Thursting above the skyline, in the foreground are the unique glass buildings that make up the downtown ... read more
The final chapter of the journey.
Published: January 29th 2011North America » United States » Colorado » VailSo, it was time to leave Florida and meet up with my Dad in L.A. I don't even know how to describe how it felt to leave Florida, I mean there were just so many emotions that I can't quite put into place, so I'm not even going to attempt too. But what I can say is that I left knowing that i'd had an amazing trip, and would definitely be back at some stage. Colorado was amazing. The flight in was short, the snow was thick and the sky was blue, we were ready for a good time. The drive from Denver to Vail was about 2 hours with whatever stops we had in between. Denver was relatively flat considering that Colorado is known for its mountainous terrain, but as we exited the outer regions ... read more
Summer in a Swiss Sister City: Vail, Colorado
Published: August 12th 2010North America » United States » Colorado » VailWe left Glenwood Springs early in the morning because we planned on stopping at Hanging Lake. It was a disaster from the start. Oliver fell asleep immediately, and we worried he'd be crabby for the hike. After weighing our options (it was our anniversary, after all, and we made the drive all the way here...), we decided to continue as planned. Unfortunately, exit 125 for Hanging Lake was closed from eastbound I-70. We decided to turn around at the nearest exit and head there from westbound I-70. Besides, I had to use the bathroom. The next exit was four miles away. We pulled in, and, wouldn't you know, the bathroom was closed for cleaning. No matter; I'd find a portapotty or something at Hanging Lake. We headed back the way we came and discovered that exit ... read more
Day 3- Biking from Vail Pass summit
Published: July 21st 2010North America » United States » Colorado » VailToday was a great day. We rented bikes and were taken to the Vail Pass summit. The arrangement was to pick us up in Vail 2 1/2 hours later. We opted to instead keep the bikes the rest of the day and ride them the rest of the way to Avon and return them at the lodge. It was a 26 mile trip in total, and it was exhilarating! The early parts of the the trip were a snap - at one point I traveled a long time - perhaps at least a couple of miles without pedaling, just working the brakes as we changed altitude. We stopped in Vail Village and Lionshead to explore, shop and eat. We had absolutely outstanding German food at Pepis in Vail Village. Paula had cabbage rolls and Dan had ... read more
Driving in Colorado Part 3
Published: December 13th 2009North America » United States » Colorado » VailVail We were pleasantly surprised to find Austria on the way to Aspen when we decided to make an ice-cream stop. Vail, a ski resort town, had to be designed by a home-sick Austrian architect. It features the wooden Austrian bridge that goes over a creek, narrow roads, Alpine houses and condos with ornate shields, crests, and flags and colorful and fragrant flowers on the windows. At around two thousand dollars per square feet, I could own a tiny piece of a small Austrian ski village replica. The dining options are stupendous in this town. There are many great places to fulfill the craving for International delicacies; casual Mexican, gourmet French, classic Continental, timeless Italian, old-fashioned steakhouses, Asian fusion, and Swiss fondue. If I were an avid skier and I lived here, I would ski down ... read more
Snowboarding the great mountains
Published: November 18th 2008North America » United States » Colorado » VailThe Road Trip to Vail, CO You look out both sides of the car and all you can see is colorless white snow, piled high to make way for passing cars. As you get closer you start to see more and more cars starting to park. You get out of the car you smell the icy sharp smell of fresh snow just waiting to get pounded on the runs. You get on the lift take it to the highest possible point and get off, you get out your ipod and look for a gnarly tune and as you drop down in, you feel a sensation of weightlessness as your board hits the smooth silky snow. There is no better feeling then snowboarding, especially in Vail, Colorado the best place for snowboarding. Their record breaking snow that ... read more
This morning we woke up to some nice fresh powder outside of our hotel room window. We then of course went right to the computer to see how much snow each resort had gotten. Vail reported 4 inches and Beaver Creek 5 inches. We had one last day to spend on snow and it was totally perfect that we got to ride some nice fresh powder today. For our last day, we had the option of going to any of the resorts that we had already been to or spend a day time at Keystone. After a little pondering, we decided that we would go back to Vail since it is the biggest of all of the places we had been to. Also, when we were there Monday the snow was a little bit crunchy so ... read more
I'm pretty sure that Day 2 found both Jason and I waking up with smiles of excitement looking forward to our first day on snow. We woke up around 7:15 or so and got all geared up, made sure we remembered to bring anything we could ever need, and then we loaded up the car and grabbed some continental breakfast to-go. With bagels in hand, we hit the road on the 1/2 hour journey to Vail. Once there, we parked in the parking garage in Vail Village and booted up. After a quick bathroom break and storing the backpack, we were ready to roll. The chairlifts open to the public at 8:30, so of course we were right on the lift by then. If I was a weather man, I would say that the day at ... read more
