So where is Delagua, Co? Well let's take a look The maps show the old area of Delagua sits slightly to the west of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway. It is about 17 miles North of Trinidad which is the county seat of Las Animas County. Another county map shows the breakdown of 5 districts in Las Animas County. Delagua appears to sit in the township of Aguilar. Aguilar is referred to a Statutory Town. The town was founded in 1894. Census from 2000 shows about 565 people lived in the town. I can only imagine how few people lived in the district prior to the mining company arriving. Aguilar is said to sit 1 mile west of Interstate 25 (Kennedy Memorial Highway). Natalie at 4 1/2 years old begins school. Natalie's first school was right near her home in the town of Delagua. It was a two story brick building and on the front of the school was a sign posted saying 1902 Longfellow. The school was named after the poet. Linda found a photo of the school years ago and it is posted here. Natalie also had the company of her cousins that lived next door to her. Her mother's brother had three children also. The youngest child was 7 months older than Natalie and the other two were separated by a few years each. They lived there for the entire 12 years that Tally grew up in Delagua and they were her best play mates. ... read more

"Tally - A Coal Miner's Daughter" Delagua The Early Years OVERVIEW: Natalie Henrietta Salazar was born on March 6th, 1927 to her mother Laura (Martinez) Salazar and her father Francisco Salazar. She was born in the very small mining town of Delagua, Colorado. Delagua sat in a small valley 17 miles northwest of Trinidad in the county of Las Animas. It was common practice for coal companies to set up small communities for the sole purpose of housing the workers and their families. This is how Delagua came to be. It took the name of the creek and canyon that it resided in. Natalie's father Francisco worked for Victor American Fuel Company as a coal miner in what was referred to as the Camp Delagua Mine in Del Agua Canyon. He hoisted coal into buckets for ... read more
