It was way back when I read an article in the Guardian Travel Section about these journalist guys who had used social media whilst doing a road trip to make decisions about routes, where to stay , where to eat and drink . Their aim was to drive from Las Vegas to Denver in 5 days. Right I thought I will pinch the idea but take longer and I will do a return trip so I can fly in to Denver visit my "Colorado family", drive to Las Vegas and meet Suzanne there as she has to fly in from Dubai. Yes, we do things complicated in our family. Lots and lots of research online , reading travel books and Suz and I had our trip planned. If those guys could do it we could do ... read more

Constructed sometime between 1896 and 1905, the mill produced marble that was used in the construction of the Lincoln Memorial and in the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier as well as a host of significant buildings in Oregon, California, and Colorado. The plant consisted of departments for sawing, polishing, and carving. Most of the facility was constructed of marble. The mill survived a series of disasters, including a snow slide in 1912 and a fire in 1925. It eventually closed in 1941 due to market issues and transportation costs. By the late 1970s, the mill was in ruins. Efforts to re-open the quarry commenced after 1989... read more

Hiya All. Keep those comments coming please. Well these last few days have been lazy days - partly due to the fact that I was going to hike a trail up at McClure Pass but it turned out that I was above the snow line when I got there and I needed skis not hiking boots... so I had a leisurely drive down the pass - found a babbling brook , a field with horses surrounded by mountain peaks and thought it was a good picnic spot. I passed up on the hiking. It is quite lovely driving around these mountain valleys with very little traffic - Carbondale is a quaint town - with neat stores and houses - nothing brash or garish about it. And the folks here seem very friendly and polite - they ... read more

Day 2 Yes I am loving Colorado - Pat picked me up and we drove 3 hours through the mountains to where he lives 2 miles up a winding road from the valley at El Jebel. Our nearest town is Carbondale. And at about 6000ft high we have fantastic views from this lovely house. Pat and his wife Velma stayed with me as an Intervac hospitality exchange about 4 years ago - and so now they are returning the swap. The house is beautifully designed with lots of wood and windows- quite becoming for a mountain perch... I am very happy here. They have a car for me to borrow-so I have already driven the SUV yesterday and today I had the big Buick!!!! - so many controls I felt like a pilot. But of course ... read more

We've titled our blog 'Moon of Honey', as we are beginning our extended honeymoon trip. I researched the term 'honeymoon' and found it's origins to date back to the mid 1500's. Because the first month of marriage is deemed to be the sweetest, one's honeymoon is the sweet month after marriage, in which it is customary to get away. We are lucky enough to have a honey-year! I've taken the year off from teaching (though I'm currently finishing a long term sub position at Basalt Middle School), and Philip has reserved chunks of time during his slow seasons to devote to travel. We hope to be out of the country all of October and November, as well as April and May. During the cold winter months we'll be in and out of Carbondale, with ideas of ... read more

A backpack along the Avalanche Creek valley. This trail follows the major drainage that runs west from the heart of the Maroon Bells–Snowmass Wilderness. It is a long, valley-bottom trek with meadows sprinkled liberally along the timbered valley floor, ending with a steady climb to a spectacular lake basin. Connecting trails include the Hell Roaring, East Creek, Avalanche Pass, Capitol Creek, and Silver Creek Pass routes, making the Avalanche Creek Trail an integral part of any extended trip in the western half of the wilderness. Drive south 12 1/2 miles on Highway 133 from Carbondale. Turn left at the sign for Avalanche Creek and follow the road for 2 1/2 miles past Avalanche Campground to the parking area at the southeast end of the campground. Avalanche Creek Trail is within the Maroon Bell-Snowmass Wilderness, please educate ... read more

The high mountains of Colorado’s Elk Range are among the finest peaks in the Rockies. With Wilderness designation, these protected mountains are rugged, steep and aesthetically pleasing. Crystal clear streams, pristine alpine lakes and lush, green vegetation are common sights, allowing for many magical photo opportunities. Mount Sopris is the striking northern sentinel of the Elk Mountains. It towers above the town of Carbondale and the Roaring Fork River Valley in a very dramatic fashion. Indeed the surrounding river drainages of the Roaring Fork and the Crystal River give Mount Sopris a vertical prominence few mountains in Colorado can match, rising over 6,000 feet in a few miles. This is impressive for a mountain that rises to the rather modest height of 12,953 feet. The sight of a sparkling white Mount Sopris raking the sky above ... read more

Geo: 39.4022, -107.211First of all: thank you, Avon Westinn, for the magnificent shower this morning. A full bathe - shampoo, conditioner, full body lathering (even between the toes), all leaving me actually smelling like I can afford being a member of a place like that. And afterward - a clean shave. It's true. An actual razor meets my face once, maybe twice a year. I find it somewhat humorous that this year's first occurrence happened while living out of my truck. As usual, spent the morning at Loaded Joe's for a final latte (I've said that before!). The past few times I had been there, I overheard the same man talking to people about spirituality and energy and human design. It all sounded interesting and, upon arriving back in town last night, hoped that I would run ... read more
