After returning to LA for a night, we caught the Coast Starlight train up the Californian coast to our first stop, Santa Barbara. We only stayed one night here, but had enough time to get a taste of it, walking up and down its pretty streets with lots of small shops and restaurants. The architecture was quite Mediterranean in nature and there were great mountain views which would have been even better if the haze hadn't been so bad. We walked down to the beach and climbed a tower which had impressive views of the town. Leaving Santa Barbara we got back on the Coast Starlight train for a 9 hour journey up to San Francisco, we snaked along the coast and through mountains. It even had a special viewing carriage made mostly of glass for ... read more

21st & 22nd April 2010 Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Malibu & Santa Barbara Thought we'd start off by doing a little place name-dropping! We hadn't planned to visit all of the above, but as we were sat in 'the beast' setting off from the Los Angeles campsite, Jonathan looked at me and said, What can we go and see on our way to Santa Barbara? Well, he did ask! We were heading West anyway but instead of heading round the outskirts of LA on the Interstate 101, we went West through town instead. We travelled the length of Sunset Boulevard from LA central to the coast, taking in the Hollywood sign and the very posh neighbourhoods of Beverly Hills and Bel Air along the way. It took a few attempts to get a picture of ... read more

Why Did I leave? Visiting Santa Barbara over the last ten days has brought back many fond memories. I lived here from 1993 to 1996 and the place hasn't changed much and is still one of the most beautiful places in the world. SB is known as the American Riviera because of it idyllic weather and its location between the mountains and sea. The city receives abundant sunshine because its the largest southern facing coastal plane in California. The Santa Ynez mountains tower over the back of the city and the Channel Islands lay a few miles off the coast. Most of my friends from that time are still here and wouldn't live anywhere else. People from all over the world come here to enjoy the golf courses, culture, great cuisine and beaches. Many students move ... read more

I have not had a lot of free time while on this trip home to the US. The free time I have had was often without consistent Internet access--stealing signals from neighbors while leaning against the window gets tiresome--so I have been on a blog break of sorts. Never a bad thing, to take a break and reflect, but then I fear I will forget to write down my observations and the key experiences that really are all still part of the great China Experiment. It's been three plus weeks, but here are some highlights. We flew home without real issue and I was saying prayers of thanks the entire flight back. The kids each had 2 seats (coach) and I was sandwiched in the middle but they slept and never fought and I was grateful ... read more

I finally backed out of my driveway at 10:57 am on Saturday, December 26, 2009. Earlier in the morning I had breakfast with a good friend of mine, loaded up the car, washed the dishes, and made arrangements for my trash and rent payments. As soon as I got on the road, a stream of ideas started flooding my exhilarated brain. Here are a few of them... I realized why I like to travel. You see, traveling is like a new beginning in life. I am not talking about a weekend trip to visit friends. No, I am talking about a little more lengthy travel--a week or more camping etc. When you travel for a longer time, you have to pack your whole life into a suitcase or a car. In fact, what is left at ... read more

(Editors Note: We are home and finalizing the Blog) Saturday had multiple possibilities, but the one we settled on was to head up and check out Solvang. Since we had been told by the Ranger Station that all trails were gated we settled for finding the smallest road we could on the way up. At a bend in the 101 just at the top of a hill is a truck pull out and at the end of that is an unmarked road called La Lata Pl. (on the map) by taking that to the bottom of the hill and going right on Alisal Rd you can do the last portion of the route on a storybook farm road with huge oak tress festooned in hanging moss ala New Orleans. Really a nice drive and it takes ... read more

Day 5: We spent the night with Grandma Carole and Jenny. It was really nice to see them and get caught up on what happening in everyone’s lives. As far as our travel there is not a ton to say here. We got up early and had a delicious breakfast at Big Johns in Frazier Park then headed west. We stopped at the Ranger/Fire station to ask about road closures only to find that the major portion of our route was blocked by an obstinate property owner who had put his own locks on the forestry gates, and they couldn’t even open it. Our first section of trail down Quatal Canyon was lots of fun and since we new that we couldn’t take the later trail, we took our time and really enjoyed it. Some trail ... read more

The drive down to Santa Barbara was a better one being that the sun finally started to come out and I realised why we have air con in the car!! Getting to the hostel was great, my first glimpse of what I had always thought of as "California" with palm trees and a proper beach!! The hostel was only 2 blocks away so on arriving we went for a walk around the area. The beach was full of birds, the usual gulls and loads of huge pelican's! The beach itself wasn't the cleanest but was still the nicest one we'd seen so far. We went for a walk along their local pier, full of the usual restaurants and tourist shops when we spotted a shop selling FISH & CHIPS. We thought wow proper fish and chips ... read more
