On our way out of San Francisco, we stopped by St. Paul's Catholic Church (near our rental) to see where Sister Act was filmed. Then we had a very beautiful drive along the coast, stopping at Santa Cruz for a walk along the wharf and lunch with a view of the ocean. Drove by the Surfer's Museum and also saw quite a few people surfing, or attempting to surf. Drove to our cozy cottage rental in Pacific Grove and strolled along Lover's Point. Had pizza for supper and rented a movie--saving energy for tomorrow's activities. . .... read more

Geo: 36.6193, -121.919Got up and had the usual breakfast and broke camp and got things loaded up to head to Mendocino. We had talked to Jerry and Nadxli and they were going to meet us in Mendocino that evening. Before we broke camp we drove down to the Pacific Grove waterfront past Lovers Point around to where the wild waves were crashing. Pacific Grove borders Monterey and Carmel on the Monterey Peninsula, and the coastline is some of the most beautiful. We enjoyed the dramitic scenery from the car --it was all very windy and cool. We then drove through the historic downtown of Pacific Grove and though we longed to stop at The Red House for a meal we had to keep moving. People often ask me where I got the money to travel. Then they don’t believe me when I tell them that I worked for six months as a waitress in California. But, it’s true. Every single cent of my original travel budget came from bringing people their coffee, their eggs, their turkey sandwich on wheat, no pickle, no tomato, extra mayonnaise on both sides, extra mayonnaise on the side. Whatever people wanted, I brought them with a smile (even if it only lasted as long as I could turn my back in some cases), and it paid well. I worked at a small town café owned by my honorary mother, Holly, and managed by my best friend and honorary sister, Amy. With its family vibe and homemade food, it was a great place to work, and ... read more

An early farewell to LA with the expected traffic, but at least we were soon the freeway heading northbound. Trading the city mayhem for some wilderness calm....so we hoped! Our journey was expected to be long but event free. We followed Georgia's recommendation to drop in on a "Trader Joes" store to get some supplies for a camp BBQ, and what a gem of a store that is. Might be a chain, but it clearly has health food at it's heart, and the food was nicely laid out.....think of an up market and more stylish Waitrose versus the normal stores being more Netto/Lidl style! Another chain knocked off for lunch with a stop at an IHOP.....pretty tasty pancakes, even off they are mixed with combinations that make no normal sense ("Dad, why would you want eggs ... read more

Today I learned another lesson mentioned by Burning Man veterans, the hard way. Physically, the body requires some time to recover from the festival. Some people are shocked I planned any driving this soon afterward. While a day in Reno is enough for a mental recharge, I needed more physically. If that’s not enough, I’ve had no rain for over a month straight, which means I haven’t had the top up for any drives. The wind, dry air, and residue of Burning Man finally hit me hard. Today, I spent nearly all my time in bed. I found this surprising, although I shouldn’t have (see ). I have to hope things become less overwhelming in the future, or I will need to cut down the amount I do each day simply to survive. At least I ... read more

Today while cleaning out a closet Ann ran across a framed T-shirt with a cat emblem. This emblem was none other than the Fat Cat T-shirt I had purchased in the late 1970’s from a Pacific Grove, CA restaurant. This piece of an old T-shirt reminded me of the following memory. A long time ago (late1970's) in the far-far-off land of Pacific Grove California, I was an undercover agent in charge of the Fort Ord, CA., Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) drug team. If you were young, crazy and had a lot of energy, you could be a drug agent in those days. In fact, if you are crazy and have a lot of energy you can be drug agent today. Of course, the catch is you have to be an Army CID agent. The recent ... read more

Finally we fly to California In reviewing our blog today Nov. 13, 2010 I have found several we started and abandoned. Here is one that I didn't delete. Not much but a reminder that we do visit family once in a while. We had planned on visiting Bill's sister and family in Pasadena for some time, but living, such as working as volunteers at the hospital several days each week just got in the way. Finally we said, enough is enough, we are going. March 20th was a beautiful day. "Good grief," Nancy said, "why didn't we go to California during the winter. It's nice here now." I guess it shows how smart we are. Our flight took us from Baltimore to Las Vegas and on to Pasadena. It was a most civilized flight as it ... read more
