Yesterday (Friday, 18th) - Disaster Strikes! A stupid landscaping truck bounced a rock off of his load and cracked our windshield, but it's in a spot that won't bother our trip. It did bother our spirits for a bit, then we exited off in Cloverdale and found this great BBQ place that made everything better -- it's called the Hamburger Ranch and BBQ (go for the ribs and slaw). Lots of hills and curvy roads for us to show off our car (Zoom Zom) and currently Bob is undefeated in his constant race to go nowhere fast. We checked into the Wine Valley Lodge, famous for having an "Elvis" room and because we got in late and we charmed them, they upgraded us to the Elvis "suite". It was quite roomy, decorated in gold and red, ... read more

First post not much to say, just testing the site out from my phone. They don't have an app which is kind of a bummer but the website seems to work ok. I had to make this first boring post, so I would have a link to send people. Tomorrow morning I'll make a big post with lots of flowery language and metaphors. So stay tuned this shit is just getting started!!!... read more

Another day another struggle, just like Pac said.. I'm sitting at a dinner getting lost in the infinite blackness of my coffee. Today was the day, the day we would leave. A million possibilities raced through my mind as I chewed my complimentary orange slice. What will the lie on the road ahead? Bandits? Gypsies? The inevitable loss of life? Only the road and 3,800 miles of beautiful desolation would decide. Regardless the dice must be rolled, for that is how we choose to live and just as the sun fades and is swallowed by a pink desert sky, it is how one day we will choose to die. That day however, will not be today! #Merica!... read more

Geo: 38.2988, -122.285Please excuse me in the verbiage is incoherent. We have been wine tasting since 11:00 am. We arrived in Napa from San Francisco about 9:30 am, after an hour drive. We had arranged for the brother-in-law of the events coordinator at Covenant Woods (where my Mom lives in Mechanicsville) to be our guide/chauffeur of wine country. (I will give you the short story.....We gave a presentation at my Mom's retirement community on our Africa trip. The woman who coordinates the programs asked us about our next adventure, and we told her we were going cross country and ending up in Napa Valley. She mentioned that she was from there and that her brother-in-law did tours of Napa wine country. So, we emailed him and made the arrangements. It worked out great.)We just got back ... read more

Today was our first proper day of driving. We left Napa behind (after another huge 3 course breakfast at Cedar Gables Inn) to head to Yosemite National Park. It’s a 4 hour drive so we set off in the morning and made good progress before stopping at Krispy Creme Doughnut. We initially stopped looking for a toilet but decided to have tea/coffee and doughnuts while we were there, despite having had 3 doughnuts for breakfast! We then pressed on and stopped again at Merced for lunch and to get food supplies for Yosemite. I have been to Merced before with Shashi and it was as I remembered - really not much to write home about. We got food, supplies and left. The temperature stayed in the 90s the whole way, reaching 101 at one point. We ... read more

Geo: 38.2988, -122.285We awoke none too early to find the previous day's sun a distant memory; replaced by a steady mist. As it was, our need to cancel our Sequoia day worked in our favor, as originally we had planned to "cram" Napa into half a day. We could now take our time, which worked out much better. In addition, we were really interested in visiting the small winery Quixote, which is only open for private tours during the week. We called first thing and were able to secure a viewing late morning, which gave us something to build around. As wineries are hardly the things of kids' fantasies, to soften the blow we stopped after breakfast and allowed Anna to choose a new Nintendo DSi game of her choosing. This went over very well, and after ... read more

Geo: 38.2988, -122.285We were only to be in Kings Canyon for one night, and today was our day to drive south to Sequoia National Park. The road connecting the parks is called the Generals Highway, and the distance is only about 25 miles...at least as the crow flies. We'd been told the day earlier, by a ranger, that the road was closed by snow and had little prospect for opening any time soon. Much of the road crosses Forest Service land, vice Park Service, and they do not make snow removal a priority. The only other way to reach Sequoia would have been to drive back down into Fresno, in the San Joaquin Valley, and then down and around, coming up from the south. Even going that route, there was no guarantee the road would be ... read more
