Have you ever noticed that most other wine regions compare themselves to the Napa Valley? For good reason, Napa Valley wines are still the gold standard. And while these other areas have excellent, even award-winning wines, Napa is the glamor name through the years. Having tasted wine in Europe, South America, Africa, and Australia, I always hear Napa as the "grand" comparison. I much prefer Napa Valley as well, just because of familiarity, and comfort. I know where to go, and what to eat. I have cycled through the Valley since the 70s. I love the vibe, despite the ridiculous prices of both wine and tasting options. Go online, and it is not unusual to find wine tasting options at some Napa wineries over $100!!!!! But best travel buddy, Mike and I were just talking this ... read more

Any trip to Napa these days is special, since we get to see our dear friends, Chris and Paul. You may recall, they were on my cycling trip and cruise to Croatia last May. I think they travel more than I do, but I am happy for them. They deserve it. We are here ostensibly to attend a Bonnie Raitt concert at the Oxbow Riverstage on Saturday night. But we will spend the afternoon wine tasting in Napa Valley, enjoy a nice dinner, and hit the concert venue. Sunday, we will "peddle for pancakes" as Paul has proclaimed. Every Sunday, when they are home, they cycle about 20 miles, then stop at the Yountville golf course for pancakes or breakfast. We have done this once before with them. And it is always fun. On our way ... read more

Day 3: Friday, November 19th, 2021 Today the gang is heading out to Napa Valley. We had an early breakfast at 7:00 am at the Blue Mermaid restaurant. After my delish French toast, the group headed of the nearby Avis to pick up the car to travel to Napa Valley. Andrea our driver, did not want to take the rental car up and down the scary hilly roads to our RT-PCR appointment and I do not blame her. I would never want to drive in San Francisco. The steep hills are terrifying. We took an Uber to our CVS RT-PCR Covid-19 appointment which was a good thing because there was no parking at the site even though it said the appointment was a drive through. After our RT-PCR test we headed back to our hotel to ... read more

It takes only 15 milliseconds for the human body to register a taste. According to Dr. Hildegarde Heymann, at the University of California at Davis, taste perception is swift because the tongue and mouth (assisted by the nose) are the body’s primary defenses against poison. For our four main senses: taste takes: 1.5 to 4.0 milliseconds, touch: 2.4 to 8.9 milliseconds, hearing: 13 to 22 milliseconds, and vision: 13 to 45 milliseconds. (Winespeed) I did not know I can taste wine that quickly! And a few words about beer from Winespeed: Ten companies account for 2/3 of the world’s beer supply. According to the publication Meininger’s, the beer industry has consolidated in recent years, with the top ten beer companies producing 32 million gallons of beer annually.... read more

Would you believe there are 231 references to wine in the Bible? Wine is an element of the Judeo-Christian concept of the Eucharist, or Holy Communion, during Mass when wine is offered as representing the blood of Christ, or the presence of Jesus on Earth, so the symbolism of wine is that of a joyful drink. Holy Communion is a re-enactment of the Last Supper, an event commemorated every Easter when Christians celebrate the end of Lent, a traditional time for fasting or giving something up. (From Karen MacNeil of WineSpeed)Wine is the most common alcoholic beverage mentioned in biblical literature, where it is a source of symbolism, and was an important part of daily life in biblical times. In t... read more

Everyone seemed to enjoy the previous email about wines and champagnes. The feedback is always welcome. I just enjoy knowing that you read some or all of them. So, here are some more pearls of wisdom for you. Aside from wine and champagne, I had perhaps the best Scotch I have ever had, an 18 year old Macallan, while I was in Atlanta. It went down like this: we returned from the Warriors-Hawks game to the Marriott Marquis in downtown Atlanta. With some time on our hands, I offered to buy a round of nightcaps for the four of us. The other three opted for relatively inexpensive drinks. Somewhat at a loss of what to order, I saw the Macallan sitting on the shelf behind the bartender. I asked for the 18 year old version, and ... read more

This morning started VERY early for us - a 6am alarm. UGH! We typically have a very hard time sleeping on a "travel day" - anxious about missing the alarm. Anxious about maneuvering the airport. Anxious about missing the plane. NOT anxious about flying. We both tossed and turned all night. Waking to an alarm is just gross. There. I said it, and I meant it! Up showered and dressed. We packed the night before and set out our travel clothes. Pack the dopp kit,zip the suitcase and call for a bellman to gather up the luggage. WE. DON'T. WANT. TO. LEAVE. Really - we just don't want to leave The Pulitzer - absolutely LOVE this hotel. Our driver is out front. I think I have socks older than he. He's got a great sense of ... read more

The weather has turned and we were glad to leave San Francisco and head up to Napa - apparently there are a few vineyards in the area. First stop SF airport to pick up the car - thought we we were being clever picking up a hire car at the airport but after an hour in the queue at budget car rental we decided it perhaps wasn’t the best place to hire a car - hey ho! 5 hours later we arrived in Napa for another house sit looking after 2 house dogs jasper and Tasha - very easy to look after and a good location to explore Napa valley. Arriving mid afternoon on the Friday meant we had little time to acclimatise ourselves. So we simply popped into Napa to plan our attack of the ... read more
