Today was my day. I wanted to visit Mendocino, I read it’s a unique California town. We stayed 2 miles north of town at Russian Gulch State Park last night. Frank parked CT in Mendocino about 8:30 am and I walked around. It was overcast and cool. Mendocino is a unique sea town; lots of Victorian houses turned into B&B’s and Inns; quaint architecture; numerous shops, galleries and spas; a bit pretentious, but definitely unique. I found a quarter acre lot for sale 2 blocks from the shore for $450,000. (what a steal). It was a very photogenic town. Next we stopped at Mendocino Botanical Gardens just a few miles down the road from town. Frank waited again in CT. WOW! It was a beautiful place. Roses were in bloom and so were the most gorgeous ... read more

I jumped out of the truck, thanking the local with the friendly hills accent for the ride to Brascomb. Grabbing my stuff from the back I wave goodbye as he prepares to pull away. Before he hits the road he glances at me strangely then says, "3 favors," his 3 longest fingers waving at me, "you must do 3 favors." I was weird out for a moment, but the guy sitting behind me with his dog pronounced amicably, "3 random acts of kindness!". Then it made sense. I sat outside the Brascomb gas station and market for a while listening to the ramblings of the three drinkers sitting on the patio and eventually struck up conversation with the young fellow, Hans, and his dog, Cosmos who was a curious puppy. He eventually invited me to check ... read more

leads to a door! In any case, my last week in Portland was everything but productive. I will not fail to mention that when I was sick, I had the wonderful opportunity to wake up(after I fainted) in the house of two nurses, making it quite a comfortable escapade. I finally snagged a ride down to California, though the driver is probably the largest bafoon I've ever met(he's 6 foot 5 at least), and had me do a 24 hour detour to Sacremento which was rewarding because of the orchard I found(pomegranates, satsumas, lemons, and persimmons...), and a bicycle ride I did in Effe Yaew Nature Park, some amazing sanctuary in dedication to an elementary school teacher who took kids out on field trips in the left over forests of Sacramento. I am back in Mendocino ... read more

7am. My coat is damp. I am on my bike 10 miles inland and the fog hasn't lifted quite yet as I battle a big hill. I am trying to reach Ukiah; 40 miles inland. With my rucksack on my back, and sweat dripping in my coat. An hour or so later I reach the first town Compotche. An old conservative town in the hills with a baptist church constructed of redwood, and a school of the same make beside it. I stop at the gas station to get some power bars, and read the chalk board inside: Precipitation to date 5.36 DRY. I move on quite tired. Eventually while climbing a 10% grade for 2 miles the sun clears out the fog and I clear out my coat and ride in style. Unfortunately, I was ... read more

After our usual breakfast of oatmeal and raisins and our peanut butter toast, we walked around the campsite. We spotted three elk out by the road. We took a trail and looked at the strands of redwood trees. They were massive. Dave stood inside of one of the trees whose trunk had been eaten away. It was like a huge cave, but the tree was still alive. We drove to the road and saw the elk. We thought they were really neat until we turned around and there was a big buck strutting across the field and there was no comparison between him and the rest of them. He must have weighed well over 1000 pounds and had a huge rack and a massive chest. We drove over to see the “Big Tree” which was at ... read more

When: May 19-20 2007 Where: Coastal Mendocino, NorCal What: Van Damme SP & Mackerricher SP The North coast is a little foggy & cold in Summer. But if we wait for an ideal weather, we'd be waiting for ever. I booked this campsite in Mackerricher SP simply because Russian Gulch, Van Damme were filled up 1 month in advance. Coming to think of it, we've never been to this part of the state at all. Give a place & dear hubby comes up with a bunch of hikes from his bible(101 best hikes of CA). Sat, 19th May: Plans to start early failed(due to personal carelessness)! Our breakfast stop was at the North parking lot of the Golden Gate. And boy, what a breakfast it was! I don't know if I can do justice to the ... read more

October 11, 2006, Wednesday. MacKerricher SP is a great campground with a beach, and horse trails. Most days start out cold around 40ish but the temp climb, after the AM fog to the high 60’s, quite pleasant. After breakfast, we biked to the stables and got our instructions for the ride. We rode “Seago” and “Chardonnay” to the Pacific coast, WOW! The seals were sunning themselves, and the ocean was crashing against the surf, as we clomped along the beach. Our horses were docile, until we started back toward the stables, then they got frisky! There are definitely specific muscles used for horseback riding, we haven’t used in a while. As I slid off the horse my legs felt like rubber. We returned our riding helmets and replaced them with out biking helmets. Controlling my bike ... read more

We woke up in the hot, dry, Napa Valley and fell asleep in the cool, coastal Mendocino area (more specifically Fort Bragg). It was pretty uneventful, but undoubtably beautiful. It's like you're in the quaint California countryside, and then all of a sudden you're in the mountains. And I don't mind at all. Mendocino's a real hippie town - it's full of intertwining gardens that boast plants not readily found in the great state of Illinois and little shops. I love the fog that surrounds the area from the Pacific. We pretty much just walked around all day, taking lunch in a home deli and getting coffee in little standing room only cafes. So quaint! We ate in Fort Bragg, which is definitely more fisherman town than Mendocino. We also took a stop at what is ... read more
