Geo: 39.3085, -123.809Got up and decided to walk the headlands in town. They are also very beautiful and there were several school groups walking around as well. There was also a group that were coming back from kayaking out in the bay. The wind was really blowing but they did not seem to get in there way. They had to carry all of the kayaks up a narrow path up to the headlands where we were walking! Whew!We saw some seals but not as many as we had seen the day before. There was a mother seal with a young seal that it looked like she was trying to push it away to go out on its own. We saw her hit it with her flipper and then we didn't see them again. Wish them both ... read more

Geo: 39.3085, -123.809Decided to go for a paddle on the Albion River since John and Cindy had not done that river. Went to the church kayak rental place but could not use their kayaks because they did not allow dogs nor would they allow dogs to be left in the car so off we went in search of another place. Went to the Albion River Campground, and unfortunately there kayaks were all sit on tops and so we decided to go with a canoe. Cindy and John were going to paddle on their stand up boards with their dogs on the boards with them!Got everything gathered up and set off. The tide was coming in and so we were able to move along at a nice pace. The seals were out and seemed to enjoy taking ... read more

Geo: 39.3085, -123.809What a luxury we are experiencing this trip. We set up our stove and fix our first coffee right outside the tent where we can then check the weather and Daily Word and then the day is ready to begin.Drove up to the picnic area to all decided to walk the headlands and check out the view. The flowers were not as profuse as they had been last year but were still beautiful. We were out at the edge of the headlands when John exclaims, "there is a whale!" Sure enough, there was one then another and before we had finished our walk had seen three or four. They evidently are moving up the coastline a little later than they usually do. Someone had told John and Cindy the Monterey bay water was shifting ... read more

Geo: 39.3085, -123.809Drove to Mendocino on a beautiful sunny day. The traffic was heavy but moved right along as we headed further north. When we turned off 101 onto Hwy 128 the fun began. It is a very winding and narrow road but fortunately there was very little traffic and we made good time. It is very lovely through there with pockets of redwoods creating tunnels of beauty as you drive along. Got to Mendocino and drove through the town and then on to the campground. Check-in was quite easy this year with little or no hassle and we headed down to check out which campsite we were going to stay in. We had seen #15 last year and yeah!, it was available. It is nice because there is a screen of bushes in front of the ... read more

Geo: 39.3078, -123.798Finally the day they had been waiting for arrived: their birthday. We had known Jerry for at least 10 years before we discovered that he and Jerry shared the same birthday and Nadxli and my birthday are only 3 days apart!First thing we did was fairly low key. We went to a bakery and had a croissant and took time to check messages, etc. and see if we could find a place to camp starting tomorrow since Russian Gulch campground was full up.Found Schooners Landing on the Albion River and decided to go and check it out. The sites line up along the Albion River. You can tell it is mainly an RV park because the sites are not very large and quite close to each other but they do have full hookups. They ... read more

Geo: 39.3078, -123.798 Most of the time we have been in northern California it has been cool and overcast. It was a pleasant surprise to wake up to sunshine and we decided it would be a good day to be out on the water. Of course, all that moisture helps make everything lush and green no there really are no complaints.Robert had done a great deal of research about kayaking in the area and we had been told that the Big River was a great place to paddle and check out the wildlife. We got directions to a kayak place that was right on the Big River very close to the bridge called "Catch a Canoe".We had planned to use a two man kayak but the manager suggested it might be fun to use the outrigger ... read more

Geo: 39.3078, -123.798Got up and walked down to the beach to check out what the water looked like. We were also going to see if we could get a phone signal. We had talked to a couple in site 15 and they told us of way to walk through the woods along the creek to get to the ocean. It was much nicer than walking along the road. By taking the path through the woods we also ended up on the beach across from where you would have had to walk through water to get to the beach coming from the parking lot. The wind was really whipping but it was a beautiful sight. We were able to get signal and heard they were on their way.We headed back and stopped and talked to the workers ... read more

Geo: 39.3078, -123.798Got on the road by 10:30 and took the most direct route up and around the San Francisco area. We took 101N to 580/80 through Berkeley/Oakland and after crossing the bridge and near Santa Rosa back onto 101 to 128 and then back to 1. Even though it was a Sunday the traffic was not as bad as thought it could have been except for the brief period going through Berkeley. Once we got on Hwy 128 it was so very beautiful. The road was very windy but you werer rewarded by the Redwoods that were closing in on you!Stopped for a break to stretch our legs and ended up at Russian Gulch at around 6 ish. Checking in is not easy. You have to drive around and find the spot you "think" you ... read more

Many years ago, Phil and I came for a week of horseback riding with the Ricochet Ridge Ranch in Fort Bragg. Our group rode horses used in endurance races that vary from 25 - 100 miles! Our rides were much shorter, but included 2-mile trots, ocean-shore rides and one 2-mile canter up through the redwoods. At that time, our evenings and nights were spent at various bed-and-breakfasts in the area, including one in Mendocino and one on a local farm. We loved the area and are delighted to be back to explore it more thoroughly by hiking. For this seven-night visit, we rented a small secluded cottage down a winding foot path through the massive redwoods and rhododendrons on a high ridge above the Big River. Our enchanting cottage has large windows to enjoy the trees ... read more

We returned to Russian Gulch State Park on a foggy day to hike deep into the magnificent redwood forest with its glorious expanse of ferns carpeting the base of the trees. The heavy fog was bringing much-needed moisture to the coastal forest. Our eight-miles/four-hour hike took us up into another pygmy forest and then down to a small stream that leads to the waterfall. The silence in the forest was most noticeable when we frequently observed small winter wrens hopping about. But few bird calls until we drew close to the end of our trail and a clutch of ravens cawed to each other far above our heads. We hiked from the forest to the coastal trail that took us to the Sink Hole, a spectacular 100-foot-wide and 60-foot-deep hole about 100 feet from the coastal ... read more
