Well, it’s reputation certainly Ives up to itself. It is one of the most beautiful drives that we have ever done. It helps that we had a perfect day of blue skies,, 50s and 60s and the bluest waters you’ve ever seen We highly recommend the drive. You have every shad of blue on your right and every shade of green in the rolling hills and mountains to your left. There are some breathtaking hairpin curves where, at one second you have a lush barrier or guard rail and the next second it flattens out to a sheer ... read more

The past month's travels included: Baños to Quito, Quito to Panama City, Panama City to Los Angeles, LA to San Diego to LA - Los Angeles to Panama City to Quito - Back to Baños and then a solo drive over the Andes down to the coast. I am now working again in Puerto Lopez. After holding still at home for several months (see previous blog entry) it felt good to do some moving around and I'm glad to have a regular schedule. I am sharing the hotel management work with two others, so I actually have some time off to walk on the beach with the dogs, take yoga classes, go out to dinner with friends and do lots of reading! The evening before I flew to the US, I arranged to have dinner with ... read more

We celebrated Thanksgiving early here in Banos. My Brit friend, Karl, asked me way back in October if Shana & I were planning to do a turkey dinner this year, so that planted the seed. Since I'd be in the states for Thanksgiving Thursday, we gave thanks together the Sunday before. Shana hosted at her house and I did the coordinating. Early in the week we took a drive up to Ambato (about an hour) to buy the bird (they're so expensive here...I paid over $40 for a 15 pounder). In addition to bringing a side dish, everybody kicked in a few bucks so with 18 guests we covered poultry costs! It was such an interesting and diverse group of people -- 4 Ecuadorians, an American married to a Thai gal, another married to a mexicana, ... read more

4 days away from Nome. I finally received my flight itinerary, and as I expected it is a full day of travel. I will leave Los Angeles Friday at 7AM and arrive in Nome around 8PM local Alaska time. I change planes in Seattle, then again in Anchorage. Though we do not change planes after Anchorage, we will make a stop in Kotzebue- a town I know nothing about. But I guess after Friday I will be the envy of all my friends when I can add fabulous Kotzebue to my list of places "visited". The one thing I haven't yet mastered is how to dress for the day of travel. It will be 75 degrees when I leave LA and single digits when I set foot in Nome. My goal for this entire Alaska experience ... read more

I know you guys are interested in my upcoming venture to Alaska so I created a travel blog where I can post pictures and try to keep some sort of journal of my trip. This probably won't be award winning literature, but when I have free time I will do my best to fill you in on my experiences in Nome. It will be in the 80s here in LA this weekend, which seems like a cruel joke considering in two weeks time I will be living in the snowy, frozen tundra. Tomorrow will be two weeks till my departure, and I'm actually feeling calmer each day as I check things off my list. But I am sure the day I set foot on that plane for my 10+ hour trip (no joke) to Alaska, I ... read more

Wow. I can't believe time has flown by so fast! I have only less than 2 days to get everything sorted for my big trip, and I still feel like I have so much to do prior to my departure. I have done most of my errands, saw my niece Sarah, and have done my trial run for packing! I'm knackered more so than stressed. If worse comes to worse and I forget something, then I'm sure I can find it in another country. I'm all on my own on this trip, which will be a time when I can reflect on my life, put the past in the past, and look forward to what is in store for me in the future!... read more

Ok, so today just plain rocked my socks. Morning was spent puttering around Hollywood... I had to check out by 10am but I didn’t need to bus to Burbank until noon, so I just wandered in and out of shops and such. It was easy enough to get to NBC. On the ticket it says be there by 2:45pm, but everything I read online said to get there earlier if you want to make sure you get in. So. I got there at 12:45pm haha. There was already a small line – but I was 34th so I figured that was pretty good! I brought a book so I read for a bit, then the guy sitting beside me kept trying to talk to me... but he was a little odd. He was a dump-truck driver ... read more

Today was the Warner Bros Tour – it was actually well worth the money – I had a ball. I made sure to get there early – I just puttered around the gift shop wishing I had the money to pay $25 for a bunch of shirts haha. Or better yet a Harry Potter Wizards Chess set for $295 ;) But seriously, the Big Bang Theory shirts were all great – Soft Kitty, Bazinga, Friendship algorithm, various other design with the guys’ silhouettes and/or clothes. All very cool. Harry Potter had a lot of cool stuff too, but I’d seen most of it already at Universal in Florida. And of course there was “Live Laugh Dance” Ellen stuff :) They start the tour off with a short video that’s basically a clip-reel over the past 75 ... read more

I finally got to update, and so much has happened. St. Louis was a blast with the housemates. The City Museum was the obvious centerpiece, and is the number one thing that I am recommending for everyone to do, especially kids and the young at heart. It's just a giant art playground beyond my wildest dreams! Staying in a fancy hotel was fun, too. After bidding Sydni, Mariah and Jake adieu, Derek and I rode the train to Austin. We hung out with Jesse and Patrick and stayed in their one room granny cottage and cooked good food and spent lots of money on food trucks and cocktails etc. Jesse is such a joy as always and it was really interesting to hear about her work with Austin Interfaith. We met some friends through my friend ... read more
